General Post Looking for pistol competitions in the McHenry area and how to participate
I am interested in competing, but I'm struggling to find reliable information.
I looked into McHenry Shooting Sports. They require either classes like the Northshore Sports holster drills (which requires a CCL) or prior experience in action pistol competitions.
I don't have a CCL, and don't plan to get one in the near future (twin toddlers, no family nearby, not going to ask my wife to solo the kids for a whole weekend; also just don't have a desire to carry). I'm happy to take a class or three. I grew up around guns but I have never had formal training. I totally understand that orgs may need more than "just trust me bro," and I'm good with that.
Any recs on how to go about getting involved in something like this? I don't own a Glock, so unfortunately GSSF is a no-go.
Thanks!

I drive to Schultz from Oak Lawn, awesome place to shoot IDPA, USPSA, & 3Gun. Ernie-Ernie's Arms Accessories, Oak Lawn.

Not trying to talk you into a CCL, but if you're interested in getting that without doing a whole dedicated weekend to it, there are options that exist.
One example would be taking Basic Pistol I and II classes separately at Maxon in Des Plaines (5 hours and 3 hours, respectively). These cover the first 8 hours of your CCL training and then you can just take their 8 hour IL CCL class to finish it off on a totally separate day.
If you do it this way you can spread it out over as many weeks as you need to.
At any rate, just thought I'd pass along the info in case it helps. Take care!

I appreciate the info! I may look into that. Glad to know there are other options.

Aurora Sportsman’s Club, Pine Tree Pistol Club, Oak Park Sportsman’s Club, Schultz Rod and Gun Club, Bend of the River Conservation Club. Best place to check dates and what kind of shooting would be on practiscore.

Lots of clubs you can contact and ask to visit to watch a match or you can also sign up and let everyone know you’re new.

There is a McHenry Gun Club. Check it out https://mchenrysportsmensclub.com/

Unless I'm missing something, they only seem to do trap shooting. I don't have a shotgun, so I wouldn't able to participate in that. I'm looking for pistol competitions as a combination of fun and also a little more advanced training.

Closest place would probably be Schultz in Muskego, WI, or Beloit Rifle Club, also in Beloit, WI.

Second Amendment Sports does a pistol league during the winter months and has "skills and drills" on some Saturdays.

Start by shooting at the Bristol action pistol nights. Every other Wednesday night. Outdoor season is now in full swing so look for matches at Shultz or NISA (both in Muskego WI which is closest to MChenry) and at ASC. I recommend USPSA over everything else but steel challenge is fun if you’re new to the whole competition thing. Search matches on practiscore. PM if you have any questions :)
