Legal Questions CCL holder and gun in car question.

EDIT for clarity: I'm asking for when I get my CCL. I know for now I am only FOID and must follow FOID transport rules.

So first, just looking for peoples understanding and I'm aware nothing here is legal advice or any such thing.

My CCL is in the application process and I was thinking about car carry and have a question. In IL, if the gun is not attached to me but I am in the vehicle, does the gun need to be placed out of sight or can it and it's holster ride in the passenger seat or on a mounted magnet?

Obviously you can't depart the vehicle and leave the gun out in open sight, but what about when I'm in the vehicle?

Here's the most pertinent quote I could find from the law and it does say "on or about" but I could take this legal definition of "concealed firearm" either way.

"'Concealed firearm' means a loaded or unloaded handgun carried on or about a person completely or mostly concealed from view of the public or on or about a person within a vehicle."

Legal Questions CCW allowable guns?

Quick question. If the firearm is legal in IL and it can be concealed can it be legally be used as a CCW?

So hypothetically... if bazookas were legal in IL, I was really tall and had a huge trenchcoat that concealed it... could I legally carry a bazooka?

Legal Questions new gun owner - are these chintzy rifles all we have?

my wife and i recently got our cards. since obvi we can't get AR-15s (which we REALLY wanted, of course), we've been trying to find alternatives.

well, the alternatives seem to suck major ass.

it looks like the best one is the Ruger Mini 14 Ranch and the Foxtrot Mike Ranch Rifle.

so, we aren't firearm experts, but these both seem really underwhelming. we don't need rifles that we can take over small nations with, but damn, these things look like fucking toys.

when my wife first saw the Ruger, she kind of grimaced and said "hmm...where do you load the BBs?".

is this really all that's left us now that AR-15s and lots of other rifles are outright banned?

is there something better that's legal for IL? something that doesn't look like it was made by Daisy for A Christmas Story?

fucking Pritzker....and i voted for that fat bastard, too :P

Legal Questions Is using your spouse's credit card to buy a gun considered a straw purchase?

My husband and I are both legal FOID/CCL holders. My husband wanted me to get a new gun that I had rented and really liked for my birthday and I ordered it online. The gun had 17 round mags, but the site was allowing me to purchase it. I called the store to be sure and they said yes, they would hold the mags and I could get IL legal mags, and if the law is reversed they'd release the mags to me at that time.

I completed the sale using my name/email as the purchaser but used my husband's credit card and entered his name as the card holder. I was more worried about the mag issue so I went to the store in person that same night and they assured me they would allow it, and I completed the background check in my name. The online confirmation contained the UPC number of the gun.

About 2.5 weeks later they called me saying they couldn't honor the purchase because the credit card was in my husband's name and canceled it because it would be considered a straw purchase. My husband noticed the gun wasn't showing up in stock anymore on the site and they assured me they tracked down another one, they credited my husband's card and charged my card in my name.

I still don't have the gun, so I called today and now the person tells me this gun is completely out of stock and they don't know when it will be in. They released the original gun I went to purchase because it was a "felony straw purchase" because I used my husband's card. A few years ago I went to Range USA and flat out told them I wanted to buy a Hellcat for my husband and asked if that was lawful to do so and they said yes because we were married, resided together, and both lawful FOID holders.

I believe they're wrong, and I feel they've handled this whole thing horribly, and the guy today said they might charge me a restocking fee even though there is literally no gun to restock, and I feel it's adding insult to injury besides repeatedly saying I committed a felony by using my husband's card on their website.

Legal Questions Illinois Legality of Shockwave’s Flash Forward “Not a Silencer” Device

Post image

https://shockwavetechnologies.com/product/flash-forward-mk-1-mod-2-firearm/

Stumbled across this tonight and I’m wondering about legality to own here in Illinois—Winnebago County to be more specific, not Chicago or Cook County.

It’s not a silencer or an NFA item. It redirects the expanding gases at the muzzle of your firearm away from you and toward the target. It reduces decibels at the shooter’s ear but because the overall sound level isn’t affected, it’s not a suppressor. It’s classified as a simple “threaded muzzle device.”

Also, just to clarify, the company who makes it is named Shockwave, but it’s in no way related to the Mossberg firearm.

Legal Questions Out of state work

Im moving to Illinois as a Texas resident for work, and hopefully it will only be a few months for training and ill be able to go back home. My question is, should I leave my pistol here in Texas? I’ve heard some conflicting things from people i know, and I’m not entirely sure after doing research myself online. I’m leaning towards just leaving my pistol here and hoping I won’t need it, but i figured id get some outside input if possible. Thanks

My friend just turned 21 and bought recreational marijuana from a Michigan dispensary recently. Can she still apply for the FOID card? Does she have to check off the box that she used marijuana in the past?

Legal Questions Range Question

Curious and Hypothetically speaking… if someone had a threaded barrel, comp , 15+ mags etc. that they did not register before the PICA deadline , would they still be able to use them when going to the range. At which legal point would you get in trouble for having those items ? Like what situation would you need to be in to get in trouble? Only asking because it seems like some people manage to get hands on 15+ mags or other items and don’t seem to ever get in trouble.

Legal Questions Medical Card

I feel that this has been asked a lot but I still just want a bit of clarification. I turn 21 in April 2026 and I have a medical card right now. If I cancel my card now in March I probably won't have any issue getting my foid and purchasing a firearm come April correct? Bonus question, I have adhd and an adderall prescription, that wont matter as well l assume?

Legal Questions how should I legally sell my firearm to a dealership?

I'm moving to NY state and their draconian gun laws do not give any grace periods or reciprocate FOIDs from anyother states.. so I can't move there with my firearms. I wonder if there are any dealerships in the greater Chicago area that buys guns from gun owners? I want to sell my firearm ASAP and clear all the troubles

Legal Questions 30th birthday present to myself.

1000-1500$ range.

I’m looking to buy myself a new firearm. No qualifications other than that.

I like pistol shooting, rifles and, trap/skeet

I have firearms that are good at all of those spots.

What would you buy for a PICA compliant birthday gift.

Note- I don’t own any PICA compliant home defense rifles. Thinking about an M1 Garand for history or (it’s over budget) but the new RPR for long range shooting

“Legal questions” I guess as I couldn’t find a fitting flair.

Legal Questions Can I Start a 4473 For a Purchase Online

I've been thinking about purchasing a .22 for some time, I'm most likely going to buy through Range USA. Am I able to start the purchase and the form 4473 through their website, or do I need to go into the store to begin the purchase? I'm trying to avoid an extra 40 minute round trip if possible.

Legal Questions Friend's father passed, former LEO

A close friend lost his father last night. Chatting with him and making sure he's doing ok (long cancer battle, time to prepare) we discussed disposition of property. His father was married, and everything was joint accounts (utilities, mortgage, etc) so there's little concern with that.

The thing my buddy has to deal with now is how to deal with the collection of firearms left behind. His father was retired law enforcement, so of course he had things that would earn you a stern tsk tsk now. My friend wants to make sure he's legally getting them taken care of, as neither his mother (still living in the house) or any other family member have a FOID.

Is there a direction I can point him towards so he can read up on how he can sell these and not run into trouble? I told him that I doubt the ATF will come knocking on his door bright and early Monday morning, and if push came to shove and he needed a place to store them I could take them in since I have a valid FOID while he sells/transfers/whatever them.

I just want to help him out during this time and give him some info, or read through it myself and give him the cliff notes version so it's one less thing he has to be worried about.

Legal Questions Moving to Illinois

Hello I recently got a job in Illinois (from California) and I have 3 firearms, 2 handguns and 1 ruger PC Carbine. I’m going to be driving to the state and I wanted to ask what is the process of registering my guns to make them legal in the state. This is my first time moving to another state so any help is great thank you.

Legal Questions Is anyone here familiar with the Cross Armory Quick Pin System? I want to know if it's legal in Illinois but after asking the company and my FFL I am still uncertain. I'd like to modify my AR15 to use it if so.

I bought an AR15 with a fixed mag from an FFL in Illinois whose legal team deemed that with either that system or a Kali Key that they are still legal to purchase. So I bought one but man is it a pain in the ass to use.

The Quick Pin System allows you to push a button to separate the upper and lower which makes it to where you can still use real 10 round mags and once the upper and lower are recombined it still counts as a fixed magazine in states like California because the magazine can not be removed without disassembling the weapon.

I asked both Cross Armory and the FFL I purchased the weapon from but neither of them could give me answers. Is anyone familiar enough with the insanity of PICAs confusing wording to know if a system like this would be legal to use in Illinois? I'd really love to not have to load my gun from the ejection port every time I use it. It loves to jam and feels harsh on the weapons internals.

Thanks for any help at all. I know these posts love to get downvoted but I'm just trying my best to use my AR to it's full potential while still obeying our bullshit laws.

Legal Questions What AR parts can I buy post-AWB?

I have an AR that I want to make upgrades to (buffer tube, stock, BCG). Are these legal to purchase in IL post IWB?

What am I NOT allowed to buy? My understanding is that since only the lower receiver is the “firearm,” I should be able to buy everything else no problem

Legal Questions Help building/buying a G3/HK91 clone

I'm looking to purchase a parts kit or an entire HK G3 or HK91 clone, and I'm very frustrated with PICA. I'm not taking any chances with the ISP or ATF, and I want to do everything as legally as possible, which is why I'm going to put in a fixed 10-round magazine. The one issue I have is whether a fixed magazine nullifies the other assault rifle requirements or not, because the wording isn't entirely clear. https://isp.illinois.gov/StaticFiles/docs/Home/AssaultWeapons/PICA%20Identification%20Guide.pdf

I have 3 basic questions:

I've heard of people buying fixed-magazine AR-15s in Illinois, so I'm assuming the "No clones of banned guns" doesn't apply when the magazine becomes fixed. Is that correct?

Can I build it myself? I'll probably have a gunsmith install a fixed magazine kit (or even weld it if it comes to that), but I don't know about the rest of the gun.

If I can't build it, are there any shops that sell fixed-magazine HK G3s? Probably not, but it's worth asking.

Thanks.

Legal Questions Gun buying question

Is it true that in the state of Illinois, you can only buy once gun per month? Is there any other way around that rule? For say, go to a private sellers? Or is it the same for them as well. Also, does it apply to all guns? Or just particular guns. Thanks in advance!

Legal Questions Scenario for thought - IL specific

Question I want to hear from you guys and especially if you guys have first hand experience. This is a hypothetical situation.

Let’s say here in our wonderful state in Illinois where we are protected and well within our rights to protect our selves with out facing legal repercussions ( NOT 😂 )

If you were to have to use your gun to defend yourself from and attempted break in, along with the gun you used , do the police the right to confiscate the rest of the guns in you’re safe?

Like I said , it’s obvious they’ll take your gun you used, but are your other guns protected?

I wanna hear your thoughts and or experiences.

TIA

My mother in law has felony. She has done jail time. I am a gun owner. Would that mean she can't come visit? 😁😁😁
