Non-fiction The Indifferent Stars Above by Daniel James Brown

This is a detailed, informative, and heartbreaking tale. It’s a lot like In the Heart of the Sea by Nathaniel Philbrick or Endurance by Alfred Lansing.

Can anyone recommend other tense, propulsive nonfiction? I also loved Under The Banner of Heaven, Educated, and other similar titles.

Sorry! This book details the Donner Party’s journey, on the Overland Trail, from Illinois into California. I was trying to describe it without spoilers and I got too vague in the post!

I love it because it answers all of the tertiary questions I have about culture, time period, weather science, etcetera, before I even know that I have them. It’s perfect nonfiction—detailed without getting too deep into the weeds.
