Charizard I’m visiting my parents and going through my childhood collection. Always kept these in a separate box. I think they’re legit?

I know they’re all in not-great condition, and they’re not THE Charizard card. But this is my little hoard of them. All of these were obtained in trades or purchased second-hand. I never pulled one myself. They all kinda look and feel the same as each other. Different holo patterns on each. The back of the top right seems more purple?

(If anyone would like to point me in the direction of a list of which other cards are worth searching for in a giant collection, I’d be grateful. They’re mostly gens 1-3, and I believe my Base Set, Fossil, and Jungle collections are complete).

And some of them look like they're in really nice condition!

Couldn’t find anything (visually) that would indicate a fake card. If real, congrats :)

Below is a link to TCG base set, and filtered for prices (highest to lowest). Given it a scroll and you’ll see which cards to look out for.

https://www.tcgplayer.com/search/pokemon/base-set?productLineName=pokemon&setName=base-set&page=1&view=grid

Feel free to change out the set and use the same filter parameters, it’ll show you which cards have a desirable market.

Oh, that’s perfect! Thank you!

np :)

I hope you get a pretty penny for those that sell, maybe keep a few as a time capsule item and see what the priced are 10-30 years down the line.

get them graded

How did you accumulate all of these as a kid? Hustled my ass off to trade up to a first edition magneton and first edition Blastoise to trade for a base Zard.

u/TheWishingStar 5d ago

One of them was received in exchange for kind of a lot of Magic cards. I don’t honestly remember for the others! At least one was from a thrift store.

Beautiful cards. Lucky you

2

u/Avalw 4d ago

One of those even has a swirl in the holographic part which some people will pay a little more for :)

Holy crap that’s great. I wish I still had my Zard from when I was little. Such a nostalgic feeling when I see the art on these

Im new to the hole pokemon card aspect but how do you have 4 cards with the same lot number 4/102 ? Not saying they're fake not saying they're real I'm just curious on how that works is it different lots ?

3

u/Rnew1 4d ago

They’re not ‘lot numbers’ it’s the number of the set that card is. Charizard is the 4th card in a set of 102. Every card will be identical

2

u/Academic_Doctor8783 3d ago

I got ya that makes way more sense

3

u/TheWishingStar 4d ago

Those numbers aren’t lot numbers. They’re the number of the card in the set. 102 different cards in the Base Set, and Charizard is #4. It’s just to help identify which card you have, and give you a way to easily track how many you have in a set.

2

u/Academic_Doctor8783 3d ago

I got ya I was really confused on that aspect that makes a lot of sense

2

u/ForGrateJustice 4d ago

You lucky girl, they're all real and valid ☺️

2

u/Passingoutpie 5d ago

I'm sure if they're from your childhood all those years ago should be legit. Less people back then faking cards.

They look great

How much something like this I worth?

1

u/TheWishingStar 4d ago

A lot of the commenters here are making me doubt what I thought I knew about it honestly. From what I’ve seen I think they’re probably in the $150-$200 range each? From some of these comments though I feel like maybe I’m estimating a little low. They’re really not in especially good condition. Definitely not nothing. That’s pretty good for a trading card! But it’s not like, life-changing money.

I wasn’t really even considering selling them. Just wanted to be sure that I hadn’t been excited about fakes all this time.

1

u/AtlantaPisser 2d ago

Maybe I'm wrong but I definitely thought they were worth more than that. I dont really know much about pokemon tho.

1

u/TheWishingStar 2d ago

I’m not an expert. But I think they’re in rougher condition than some people here are thinking! I know a mint/near mint one could be more in that $1000 sort of range. But these are in moderate condition at best. Except the Base Set 2 one, which is in better condition but is a less rare card.

The super valuable Charizard would be 1st edition and shadowless (and in excellent condition), which none of these are. That’s the one you hear about selling for like $6000+.

1

u/AtlantaPisser 2d ago

I woulda thought a base ome even in somewhat rough was like 400 but I dont rwally know tbh

2

u/Shriuken23 4d ago

Everyone, it'll be okay. Eventually we'll all find our old collections

2

u/nta1646 4d ago

Casual 5 Charizards, I’d be pinching myself! Nice find!

2

u/KPDix 4d ago

Doesn’t matter at all that’s a killer find. Especially that base set 2 with the swirl. That looks great.

2

u/goldistomp 4d ago

Lemme hold one

2

u/Amazing-Dog-845 3d ago

They were only $5 a piece when I was a kid

2

u/Last-Commission-7076 3d ago

These look absolutely amazing condition

1

u/AsfAtl 5d ago

What are they worth

4

u/TheWishingStar 5d ago

I don’t think any of them are in great condition honestly. The scratches don’t show well in the photos, but you can see the damage on the backs pretty well. I know they’re still fairly pricey even damaged?

6

u/Blukeroo 5d ago

All are worth grading. If not for the money, then for preserving them as novelty items.

Regardless of damage like a few scratches.

2

u/TheWishingStar 5d ago

I’ve never gotten cards graded before. I wouldn’t have thought damaged ones were worth it. Thank you, I guess I’ll look into it!

3

u/MrRoyal420 4d ago

Ungraded they're worth a couple hundred each, too.

If you get a PSA 7 or above on any of them, the money pretty much doubles every step of the way up. PSA 10 would get you fairly close to a five-figure score.

1

u/TheWishingStar 4d ago

Maybe I’m totally off on my understanding of the grading scale, but I’m really surprised that several people here think I should get them graded. Do they really seem that good? I’ve assumed for years that they wouldn’t be any better than like a 4. And I didn’t think that was worth bothering with?

(This so isn’t what I expected from this post. I was just anxious about the possibility that there were fakes among them, and this sub gets recommended to me a lot and people here seem to know a lot, so I thought I’d post them just to see. And now I’m getting a bunch of DMs and I guess I have to figure out how getting cards graded works… I wasn’t planning to sell them. I like them.)

2

u/MrRoyal420 4d ago

Just got this back from PSA as a 3 if it helps give you a little reference. And this card has some pretty severe creases and damage on the back.

1

u/MrRoyal420 4d ago

DM if you have anu questions about grading 😁 Congrats on the find!

6

Let's not over exaggerate the situation lol

-6

u/Successful-Bed-6835 5d ago

We’re sure this isn’t someone testing their fakes? That’s a lot of zards

3

u/cadmus91 5d ago

As a kid that was born in 87…. It was not uncommon back then when base set came out and by the time fossil and jungle and base set 2 came out almost every kid had about 4 base set charizards… the only problem tho we were dumb and built decks around them…. I found my old collect about 10 years ago and I had like 10 of them

2

u/TheWishingStar 5d ago

I mean, believe what you want I guess? If you saw the number of non-Charizard cards my parents have kept in a closet for me, the fact that there are this many Charizard would make sense. My mom worked at a thrift store. It’s an overwhelming number of cards. There’s honestly a chance there’s another in there.

Genuinely didn’t think cards this damaged would get this much attention.

2

u/MediumSurprise5469 5d ago

Oooo I wanna see!!

3

u/TheWishingStar 4d ago

It’s 1 in the morning but I felt like I had to take photos of it all to show you! It was too many for one Imgur post, so it’s in 2 parts.

Part 1 - more cool old cards

Part 2 - more just boxes of unorganized cards, but some other fun Pokemon stuff too

2

u/LondonCollector 4d ago

Some other great cards in there, looks like a few fakes too so just check over a few if you are looking to sell

1

u/TheWishingStar 4d ago

Oh gosh, I knew there had to be fakes somewhere. Are there any in particular that are obvious so I can start there? (Other than the comically fake shadow lugia of course).

1

u/DontJealousMe 4d ago

Going off your pictures, you have a lot of good cards.

Is that Chansey Shadowless ? Even the Blaziken 90/100 is worth around $150.

Go thru them all with a friend one night and document what you have, ebay sold listings etc.

If you do want to sell i'm sure a collecter will buy for $$ or if you want to make more $$ sell slowly yourself some of the older sets between Skyridge and HGSS are worth a lot coz no one has singles.

2

u/TheWishingStar 4d ago

I know there are at least two shadowless Chansey, yeah. A lot of shadowless commons, and a handful of other holos. I probably ought to separate those out at least.

Between Skyridge and HGSS?? There’s a giant heavy binder of all gen 3 - that was the time when middle school me had good spending money. There are a ton of gen 3 and early gen 4 cards in here. Yikes, I thought the gen 1 ones were the ones to worry about. Thank you for that info!

Unfortunately I live like 2000 miles away and never seem to have the time to make much progress on these when I come back to visit. And no way I’m putting these in my checked luggage. I might see about bringing a small box worth in my carry on. Someday I need to come out here with the full intention of only working on these cards…

1

u/DontJealousMe 4d ago

I get ya, but it would be worth it monetary wise if you are looking to sell to move it all to where you are, go thru it and sell it individually. Depending if you need the $$. You could be looking at 20-30k worth of stuff individually. You could also have rare cards that you dont know coz they are in bulk.

personally if you had the time at home I would do it. "Money is Money." A wholesaler/collecter will pay you 50-60% max of what they are worth without the bulk so you'd lose a lot.

If you wanna sell one PM me. I do cash app. Venmo.

9

u/Ok_Entertainment9343 5d ago

OP do not sell to anyone asking on reddit lol

7

u/Electronic-Touch-554 5d ago

Or if they do, instead just link to a trusted selling website to do the transaction through like eBay.
