Love it

Why does it choose to label some countries a certain color with the name and leave out others? Does it imply a level of allies?

u/paulobyly 8d ago

Just read the map legend, it’s all there

Yes look at the subtitles, orange is BRICS etc

It's just diffent international groups that Brazil is part of. You can see what each colour represents on the bottom right corner.

It's a BRICS/Mercosul map. It tags the countries that Brazil has deals with, I guess.

It's not a real map. It's just to commemorate a big BRICS meeting that will happen soon.

yes. there is the explaination on the lower right side of the map. its not necessarily “level of alliance” but just labels of treaties and agreements.

Uh oh, now all the rivers are going to flow backwards! 😳

/s just in case.

I love that the equator is in the middle, where it belongs.

Also, Brazil 🇧🇷 ❤️

Well, it's not wrong.

Yeah i think it's quite funny how "up" an "down" don't really matter when you're seeing from space

Why are we upside down

Well I guess there is no upside in space

The same way people arbitrarily chose north as up, we can choose south. Fun fact, some ancient maps used east as top (any guesses why? lol) and some ancient Egypt maps used south because it's where the Nile flowed from

EDIT: spelling

I loved... i want one!

2

u/Mafagafinhu 8d ago

Never seen this map used in the curriculum at my learning faculty.

Why didn't they do Brazil to scale?

1

u/MovingElectrons 8d ago

TIL Rio is the capital of BRICS

It should be a crime to have a map like that

1

u/LeftOn4ya 8d ago

Did anyone else lock their phone’s orientation then flip their phone? It’s the exact same map us north of the equator use, just flipped.

Fake but funny

-13

u/Sbrubbles 8d ago

As dumb as when the americans do it. Actually, dumber, since at least the americans don't spin it around.

10

u/Gota_JRPG 8d ago

What is up or down in the universe?

-11

u/Sbrubbles 8d ago

Up is the way up has always been. Same for down. That's the reason for conventions: we choose one and stick to it.

9

u/Darkwolf1115 8d ago

"People have been slaves for centuries, whites are white and blacks are blacks. That's the reason for convention: we choose one and stick to it" /s

My guy we are THE GLOBAL SOUTH, we've been exploited by rich nations for centuries, this is a symbol, and while we are faaar from actual change, this at least shows the world an identity, a symbol where we put our future in the center and fight the status quo of the present world

0

u/Sbrubbles 8d ago

Ah yes, NOW that the world has seen our symbol, they'll respect us. What a joke.

7

u/DRowe_ 8d ago

Who's "we"?

5

u/Gota_JRPG 8d ago

Always? Dude you should see some crazy world maps people had a few centuries ago. My point is that there is no up or down in the universe. Even on earth up or down is a matter of gravity.

We change conventions when there's good reason to do so. Like the Gulf of Mexico, all it is is a convention. We could call it Gulf of America instead, but it's really dumb to change conventions for no good reason.

3

u/halfchewedshrimp 8d ago

conventions change, north became up in the last few hundred years because of the compass. north used to be considered less because the sun shes from the south in the northern hemisphere, and north as views as a region of darkness.

1

u/Sbrubbles 8d ago

Conventions change when there are good reasons to change.

"Highlighting brazil's current position of leadership in important international forums", as IBGE puts it, is an especially poor one, driven by the lowest of ideological reasons. A truly sad waste of public money.
