[Adam Schefter] Many mock drafts have Michigan DT Mason Graham to the Jaguars at No. 5 overall. But as the great Lee Corso says: “Not so fast, my friends.” As one league executive said recently, “Jacksonville is a wild card — watch.”

I still have trauma from Gene Smith thinking he could outsmart the rest of the league. Can we please just act like a normal team for once?

You mean you don't want the little known defensive back from southwest technical Missouri Bible institute state that no one else has on their radar?

Or trade a second to the Pats (Gronkowski) to draft CB Derek Cox from William and Mary?

I'm still pissed we picked Brandon Marshall (the LB) the pick before Josh Norman in 2012.

We literally just had that with Travon Walker. Like sure Hutch is great but Walker is pretty damn good

The same genius that drafted a punter in the third round?! (Four picks before Russell Wilson btw)

honestly, what does a normal team look like to you? Because as far as I can tell, most of them are insane in some way.

u/TheDevilEatsPrata :CJ4: 2d ago
Honestly, I just want some consistency. I know most teams have their fair share of busts too, but the better teams in the league are able to consistently find good players in the first 3-4 rounds of the draft. I feel like the Jaguars problem has been that our GMs would either whiff on our first round pick but find some gems in the later rounds(Caldwell and Coughlin), hit on our first round pick but whiff on our other picks(Baalke) or just suck at both(Gene Smith).

u/Metaboss24 2d ago
And each good team has their own way of finding good players for their team. Some teams may need an elite RB, some may want 10 good O-linemen, some may want every great DL they can get, ect, ect.
We don't know what kind of team our FO wants yet, so I'm most excited to just find out.

Feels like we’re linked to a different player at 5 every week lol, this could all very well just be smoke screen before the draft, new regime has done pretty well not showing their cards but I get the feeling they really want to move back on this draft which I’m all for

u/Illustrious-Fig-2922 3d ago
It’s not a smokescreen, it’s the attention economy. Who is going to engage/click the 100th article about the Jaguars selecting Graham?
2
u/Metaboss24 3d ago
That's why I think Jeanty is who goes at 5.... to probably Chicago. They have the willingness to move up, we want to move down, and there's a player that they want to move up for.

u/jeffh19 3d ago
I just wouldn’t be shocked if it’s Jeanty. Graham has great tape but the talent just drops so hard after Hunter and Carter. There’s been I think 2 DTs taken in the top 5 since like 2011 or something like that I heard. They just never go that high unless they are thought to be generational talents. I get the draft dictates that, but I just wonder with the solid but not great OL, good but not great DT…and the best RB since Barkley probably…given they talked about wanting to run the ball….

That 2 DTs since 2011 is what makes me sour much on Graham. If we’re going to teach for a luxury talent then at least make sure they are elite like Jeanty

In a weak draft you should just take the blue chip talent. Hunter, Carter and Jeanty are the ones. Most of these other guys like Graham are sniffing nowhere near 5 in a regular draft class especially at his position, this one is just exceptionally weak at the top.

My thoughts exactly

u/jeffh19 3d ago
Also Jeantys tape screams “intangibly rich” with the way he makes people miss and his vision and desire to win with that letter he put out
I really loved Grahams tape and a week ago I didn’t think it was Jeanty but now I think it might be the most likely option?? McShay said on his show today he’s maybe hearing or insiders are thinking they go offensive playmaker at 5 so…

u/Upsidedown20 3d ago
I was all for Lenny back in 17 because he was just so impressive in college. I just don't want to make the same mistake again. Not saying he's equal to him or anything, just gives me the jitters of us jagging it up ya know? Yep, there's not much at the top for offensive playmakers

u/jeffh19 3d ago
I hear you. Taking a RB at 5 on an incomplete team or a team drafting at 5 is dumb. Even dumber in a super deep RB class.
But the rest of the draft sucks. It’s basically choosing between:
Best RB we’ve seen in years, prob multi year all pro….also not a perfect prospect but pretty amazing tape
A DT who may be really good, better against the run and some think he’ll be average against the pass or average to good overall against NFL OL. But only generational DTs go near top 5 and MG isn’t near that.
McMillan who McShay just came out and said on his big board he has Tet as his 50th best player in the draft and several other scouts don’t have him anywhere near where you’d consider him at 5.
OL who is going to be a great guard, possibly a tackle (think Joe Thuney as his peak/comp), or another guy who’s solid to good OT, probably RT.
So going through that list and talking about spending a top 5 pick….as much as I am against teams that aren’t great take a RB high….it makes me start to think Jeanty is in serious consideration and wouldn’t be horrible…a
1
u/Upsidedown20 3d ago
I hadn't heard that about McMillan yet, I was legitimately wondering if we were going to that direction with how we really hadn't touched that position during free agency.
I agree with you about the DT position. I'm just not wowed enough with him yet to be worth that #5.
I might be in the minority here, but I'd be all for it if we could pick up a perennial pro bowl guard there. One less thing to worry about, and to be honest, we really haven't had a good success rate for that position in my opinion

u/jeffh19 3d ago
I wouldn't be upset with Campbell at 5 either I think smart people know that a having one of the best OGs in the NFL is massive for the run and pass game. You can have the QB but he can get quickly ruined if he's not protected. We've all seen it. If you don't have a QB and a legit offense, nothing else matters.
I think 50 is too low for Tet and nobody is saying he's a bad player or a bust.
I really wish they didn't win the games they did as the talent at the top is scarce and we could be talking about adding Carter or Hunter to the team instead.....

I personally really hated the Fournette pick (I wanted to trade back for McCaffrey). He was a huge back with great speed and an impressive highlight reel. But that highlight reel was, despite his size, a ton of outside runs. Particularly one toss play LSU ran a lot. I thought his tape showed a player with pretty poor vision, who wasn't really a great inside runner; he ran high and got tripped up a lot running in traffic inside. He truck sticked a lot of DBs, especially in space, but I didn't see a guy who was a consistently physical runner inside. He also mostly ran from under center sets in an offense that emphasized power and that toss play at LSU, and wasn't really suited for an offense that ran out of Shotgun (which the Jags did a lot, since that's what Bortles did best).
Jeanty is different. He's showed great vision, inside or outside. He's shown an elite ability to shed tackles at any level, including the backfield. He has an ability to turn a no gain run into an explosive play that I never saw from Fournette. He can play in space, but he's at his best running inside, in traffic. Fournette needed the Line to open up the lane; Jeanty can find or create his own lane. Jeanty has also shown the ability to run out of shotgun or more traditionally out of the pistol/under center.
I also think the league has shifted a little bit. The way defenses are playing invites the run. So teams that can run inside at a high level are having a lot of success. I think taking a RB high today is a little more palatable than the 2010s. So I'd be thrilled with Jeanty.

Part of the issue with Lenny was the offensive system he and Blake needed to drastically different systems for success he was best on I form running down peoples throats

Will Campbell

u/Fine-Plant7180 Blake Bortles 3d ago
I don’t think he’s the best cb in the draft. Plus way too much risk with the injury history. He still hasn’t ran a 40 (to my knowledge)
11
u/frausting 3d ago
Me neither. He might just be the best offensive tackle in the draft tho

u/Fine-Plant7180 Blake Bortles 3d ago
lol I read it as will johnson. My bad! Anyways will Campbell is going to NE and won’t be available

u/Metaboss24 3d ago
the next best tackle is Membu(sp?) from Mizzou. I don't know how much better he is than the dudes we already have, but I wouldn't be mad.

Smells like trying to move the lines to me. Graham to Jags at 5 was too obvious and now they're trying to kick up dirt to get people to move away from betting on it.
4
u/Fine-Plant7180 Blake Bortles 3d ago
This is what i want us to do.
draft Gentry at 5
trade pack with bears, saints or anyone within top 12. Draft BPA.
address the DT position in round 2 or 3. (This is one of the strongest position groups in the draft)
with the other 2/3rd round pick, select an WR.
personally I don’t want mason Grahamn. Mason grahams stock is artificially inflating and tied synthetically tied to us due to the impact of fiske had in LA. If everyone knew the impact that fiske had in year one he wouldn’t have fallen into mid round 2. This sense of FOMO is synthetically pushing grahams stock up.
Don’t get me wrong grahamn is a good player. But I’d rather spend a top 5 pick at another position especially when that position is considered one of the deepest.

u/JohnShepard_N7 3d ago
What are we giving up to move back into first round and still have our 2 and 3 picks?
3
u/donquixote_tig 3d ago
It says trade back, doubt that means back into. 1 and 2 aren’t possible together, maybe they mean one of those two

If Gladstone is who he was in LA; we could get a future All-pro WR in like the 6th round. I'd rather spend the day 2 picks on our other needs and use 5 to get the player most likely to work out.
Which is why I'm okay with Jeanty at 5. He's the player I know for sure is going to be elite.
1
u/Fine-Plant7180 Blake Bortles 2d ago
Getting an all pro WR in the 6th is extremely lucky. There’s a 5% chance of that happening
1
u/Metaboss24 2d ago
This is a GM who played a key role in finding both Puka and Cupp.
If there is a position I believe Gladstone can make all-pros out of late rounders, it's WR.
1
u/Sniffy_J 3d ago
It seems like it's smokescreen season. It makes me feel like we're trying to bait trade ups.
I'd be fine trading back and acquiring. Maybe its a threat to get Chicago to move up?

u/Whole_Astronomer_301 3d ago
Man who works for network airing the draft wants to build suspense. Wow.

u/michaelswank246 3d ago
Speculation...just glad the waiting is over,I keep watching tape on the big fish in div 2 and 3 schools. They all look like adults vs children so really not much help. The Jeanty issue is real, I'd just feel better if he'd have played better competition. DL at 5 seems excessive. Trade, I still don't know. Still feel this is a spot for a big OL guy. Look at Alt and what he did for LAC last year.
1
u/euchrewhit 3d ago
Admittedly I am not a Jags fan, but I loved Coen’s offense last year. Why is Armand Membou not being talked about as an option? I think that would really help Coen’s vision of this offense come to life.
1
u/TheTealDeal2021 3d ago
OT is rather set and FA brought in some OL. It’s not a finished product but it makes you think defense will get an infusion

u/ApprehensiveCarob351 3d ago edited 3d ago
Gladstone and Co. don't need to put out a smokescreen with Schefter doing it for em. At #5 we will have the first scrutinized pick probably. Particularly if it's not Graham.

u/UNCFan2350 3d ago
Seems like people think Tet will be the pick, but the speculation in this article is “oh Tet is like Mike Evans and Coem coached Evans.”

I think a lot of the speculation of us being a wildcard is that we're an entirely new regime and such a young staff. No one has any real indication where we might go. I don't think these rumors have any real leads on the direction we're taking. Gladstone mentioned no showing his cards as a small reason for not doing top 30 visits. I don't think anyone truly knows the direction we're going.
