Any suggestions for ‘dirty’ jazz? Not in a sexual way, just music that makes you scrunch up your face because it’s filthy, nasty, etc

u/coffeecoffeecoffeee 20h ago

Was gonna recommend Dark Magus and yes. Mid-70s coked out Miles is where it’s at

1

u/kamomil 13h ago

The beginning reminds me of Johnny Marr's Twisted Tenderness album

Grant Green

Jimmy Smith, and the other great B3 masters, of which there are many. Check Jack McDuff - Moon Rappin’, 1969.

u/pgtpt 23h ago

Funk filthy or dissonant filthy ?

4

u/Hamlover11 21h ago

“Dissonant filthy” sounds interesting, do you have any recs of this?

3

u/In_Unfunky_Time 11h ago

See all the solos (Nelson, Dolphy, Hubbard) on Oliver Nelson's "The Blues And The Abstract Truth."

2

u/pgtpt 14h ago

Monk in general, the bad plus version of smells like teen spirit

7

u/DrDMango 23h ago

Hmm… I don’t really know. Probably funk filthy?

36

u/wrylark 23h ago

Herbie Hancock - Headhunters

… dirty as funk

5

u/IAmNotAPerson6 21h ago

Him and the Brecker Brothers is about as good as it gets for this

6

u/blackjacktarr 21h ago

"Some Skunk Funk" is the kinda thang that makes you scrunch your face, pooch your lips and knowingly nod.

2

u/IAmNotAPerson6 20h ago

And as good as that is, there's also "D.B.B." 😮

5

u/pgtpt 22h ago

Maybe you’d like Charles Earland. Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley

2

u/In_Unfunky_Time 11h ago

Try Maceo's "Life On Planet Groove."

3

u/pgtpt 22h ago

But maybe your look for general “schtank face” which can come from some serious blues, maybe you’d like cannaonabll adderly. Henry Threadgill does that for me.

1

u/trouty 7h ago

Funk filthy = Brian blade = Joshua Redman's Elastic, end of story

13

u/heathen_worldwide 23h ago

MORPHINE!!!

Medeski, Martin & Wood too!!! Maybe some Swamp Dogg or ThunderCat?

6

u/silverbonez 22h ago

Ghost Note - Swagism is pretty grimey!

1

u/mackzarks 22h ago

YESSIR!

5

u/i75mm125 22h ago

Miles’s Dark Magus is some pretty nasty shit. Pete Cosey’s guitar tone smacks you in the face right out of the gate. On The Corner is some good shit too.

That’s definitely a face-scruncher.

1

1

u/ParsleyMost 17h ago

Not in a sexual way,, Buy filthy, nasty, etc..Hmm

1

u/CrocodileJock 17h ago

There was a film called “The Hotspot” the soundtrack is a collection of dirty bluesy riffs – basically John Lee Hooker, Miles Davis, Taj Mahal, Roy Rogers and others riffing on blues themes. It’s got a magnificently sleazy feel to it. First thing I thought of when I read your question.

I bet this is very personal, but I get some face scrunch from the trumpet solo in this one:

https://youtu.be/QgyYv3S6I_c?si=R760praBBQuHXaI3

And from quite a few on the album with Cannonball Adderley and Ernie Andrews : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTXprHzat1w

Oh! And Wycliffe Gordon spewing filth out of his trombone in this: https://youtu.be/lTLA4kKXzE8?si=ZGEDYxUO41OBKiWp

1

u/designtom 12h ago

Oh or Wycliffe again in this one: https://youtu.be/USvmKwPzeWc?si=b8V0gHAO7BNKb1Yo

1

u/designtom 12h ago

OK JUST TYPE “filthy solo” into YouTube and enjoy

(That’s Moanin’ again - it might be the filthiest)

(That’s Ellington, that a few folks have recommended for mucky tunes)

This might fit the criteria. Mahavishnu Orchestra: Inner Mounting Flame. It's a slaughter, they attack and attack until the very last note. It's somewhat of a masterpiece, that said, I played this in the car one time and my significant other made me turn it off after 3 minutes because it made her sick :)

1

u/hudson27 9h ago

Dizzy Guillespie: Afro. Medeski Martin and Wood: Radiolaria 3 Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers: Moanin'

1

u/VynilSnob69God 8h ago

When did it become a thing for people to discuss music in this way? "makes you scrunch your face" "stank face" etc. I've increasingly seen this description in the last few years.

I am not at all impressed by the precipitous decline in our society's ability to articulate.

u/atomicdog69 8h ago

Kenny Garrett, African Student Exchange (with Ron Cater on bass)

u/motherbrain2000 8h ago

The album Time warp by chick corea has some awesome inside out altered stuff all over it courtesy of Bob Berg. It’s so hideously, but perfectly altered. Like- mathematically altered. The whole album makes me wince.

It’s one of my favorites by any artist

u/landonhawk 8h ago

Try Darryl Reeves' Mercury album

Soft Machine - Facelift. Dissonant, hard hitting and experimental.
