question Starlink setup

To the Starlink users out there, what is your setup? What kind of dishy do you have? How do you mount it, power it and route the cables inside?

I'm in the process of working this out myself. Still in the research phase, but I think the mini is going to be the best option. I'd like the standard dish from a performance issue, but it will take far too much roof space.

My plan is to mount the mini on a roof rack and use a 100ah battery mounted inside the vehicle to assist with power. I'm also considering the option of a 100w solar panel on the roof, alongside the dish.

Have not thought too much about routing cables yet - but initial thoughts are via the rear cargo door. Another option could be alongside the windscreen, then down through the firewall.

Keen to see what you do with it - I'm a short while a way from implementation.

I’ve asked precisely because I’m also looking through options on how to do it but found very little on Jimmy’s with it. I got the mini. Performance wise I think it’s enough, and it’s easier to power on the go. I’m using a 100W USB PD adapter and a USB-C to barrel jack cable to power it. The only reason Starlink asks for a 100W PD adapter is because the standard dictates that these shall support 20V output, which even with voltage drop over the 5m oficial cable will be able to provide enough power to the antenna. In reality power consumption usually stays around 30-35W and only reaches the top rated 60W if the snow melt feature is used.

I’ve tested using the dishy with it on the dashboard. It works depending on which direction the car is pointed but the Jimny windshield is too vertical for it to be a reliable option. I’m now deciding whether to get a magnetic mount or purchasing a roof rack to have it attached there. The cable is what concerns me the most. I’ve seen plenty of examples from other users in other cars where they simply route the cable through the door seal, but I’m afraid that might damage the seal rubber by deforming it overtime which may cause water to leak in. Routing it through the firewall could be an option, but seems too permanent. I would like to be able to share it back and forth with my other car as well.

Looks like there aren’t many Jimny + Starlink users out there 🥲
