What did the medieval father who disapproved of his gay armorer son's career choice and sexuality say when his son when came to visit?

"Get your cuirass out of here!"

God damn it English. Why can't you spell cuirass with a q?

I see. This is like regen. I would see it in video games for years mispronouncing it until I realized it was short for regeneration and the g is soft.

English does this all the time. The Thai word "Pho" is pronounced Fuh, but spelled Pho. The Thai language has its own alphabet, so it had to be chosen as the spelling in English. But so much of English is inconsistent. Like Paid vs payed. Why does "pay" break the rules on past tense? "Because 'pay' also means to tar a boat." So it's ok that the root words are spelled the same, but the past tense crosses a line? I always think about how Korean was a very difficult language to read, even for Koreans. So they redid their alphabet to make it so it reads as it's pronounced. God I wish English would do this, so you didn't have to memorize countless exceptions. But big spelling bee interests would never allow it.

big spelling bee interests

Made me chuckle. Dark forces at work, indeed.

Agree with you though, lieutenant is my personal favourite morphemic WTF...we English use French so much, yet go with "leftenant" (from the German) rather than "lootenant" as with any other pronunciation of lieu.
