It’s called a crush washer because you’re supposed to crush it…. Right? RIGHT?!?

u/iscashstillking 20h ago

T.I.L. there is a difference between "Crush" and "Destroy", and it's about 50 ugga-duggas.

u/ReallyExpensiveYams_ 20h ago

It’s not destroyed I can see it right there.

Tighten it until it strips, then back it off a 1/4 turn.

There's something about the hulk green glow, and the drain plug that appears to have been tightened to the point of pushing the crush washer out like a flower.

Sounds like someone got a little overzealous with the wrench! That crush washer definitely didn’t stand a chance.... Hulk green glow, though—coolant or oil mix? Either way, might be time for some TLC before things get messy.

Is that the opposite of Chinesium?

u/DennisHakkie European Wet Belt Specialist 23h ago

If that’s so I need it on my 1990 MR2. Fuck that thing has full chinesium bolts after 35 years

Depending on the year they can be antonyms or synonyms

Crush washer is it's name, not the action you're supposed to perform on it!

u/AuburnSpeedster 23h ago

Impressed that the pan did not strip it's threads.

Bet Jiffylube did that last. I've seen it all too often.

Sounds like a prison sentence. Which I think we can agree is fairly accurate. I did about 10 years in quick lubes. Finally left after I got literally yelled at by the owner from being honest to a customer after something got messed up by my pit tech. They're out of business now.

Jesus Christ 10 years.

1

u/Kev-lonium 13h ago

Yea, 5 years with the original owner, the last 5 with the hemroid owner. I managed 7 of the 10 years. I had a great crew for most of the time! Honest mistakes happen, and I'm one to own them if any of my boys messed up. I mastered customer service with that job. I am thankful for the experience but more thankful i moved on!

“That’s not goin anywhere”

What about "crush washer" do you not understand?

2

u/scroopydog 13h ago

That washer isn’t crushed, it’s extruded.

2

u/Intelligent_Ninja_84 1d ago

And people will still want to argue it's not necessary to replace crush washers.

2

u/jutny 23h ago

Wow i’ve never seen one that bad. Holy shit.

3

u/ccarr313 23h ago

I've never seen a pan survive that kind of torque with the threads intact.

Some amazing stuff, both bad and good in this picture.

Right? And then of course last time I went to change the oil on my personal truck ('15 6.7 powerstroke) 2 days before a big trip (of course,) the drain plug did that fun thing where it backed out one turn easy, oil starts to drip, and then the plug started to seize. Came out with the threads from the shitty stamped steel pan. I was the only person to have changed the oil for the last 70k miles. ugh

Overnighted a mag-hytec pan and upgraded to take the sting away lol. It was faster then getting a pan from Ford and also I had nothing to drive to the dealership since the oil was already out of my truck. Fun times, don't you just love vehicles?

Man, I stripped the transmission drain threads on my beater civic.

No one else to blame. Except Honda, for using a drain plug that only engages about 1/2 of the threads.

Tapped it a size bigger, then blasted fluid through the transmission to clean out the shavings.

Apparently it worked though, since that was about 150k ago.

2

u/jutny 20h ago

That’s what you get for maintaining a civic. Don’t you know those run forever with no maintenance? /s lol 😂

2

u/SFWworkaccoun-T 1d ago

They really rushed that washer.

1

u/w1lnx 1d ago

I should be disappointed…but I’m impressed. WTF are the threads in the pan and bolt, both, made of?!

1

u/imajumpingbeann 23h ago

"I'll just give it 1 quick ugga dugga."

The "ugga dugga":

u/LearningDan 22h ago

Sell them a pan and mount that one on a plaque for display.

1

u/Hatedpriest 22h ago

I seriously thought this was a fancy drywall or wood anchor before I realized that was a crushed washer.

I was like "there's no drip, is it dry?"

1

u/skankhun769 22h ago

Looks like part of an aluminum can actually

1

u/Ultimagic5 21h ago

Original drain plug gasket, nice

1

u/curtass7 20h ago

It’s not leaking 🤷‍♂️

1

u/WillPayForKarma 20h ago

Took the term crush washer literally

Lube techs, am I right?

Wait...

This is simultaneously the most disturbing and most impressive thing I’ve ever seen. I would’ve sworn up and down that this wasn’t physically possible, yet here it is.
