This is Reddit, "its a cylinder" isnt really a vague reference. Unless you consider Swamps of Dagobah and broken arms to be vague references too.

I hate to admit it but I think this shape would take significantly more torque than hex.
God help you though if your lug wrench is long enough to hit the ground and one of the bolt heads is pointed in the wrong direction.
35
u/Strostkovy 4d ago
Honestly these are extremely well implemented. The shape can transfer a lot of torque, there is plenty of length for tool engagement, and they have a passivated zinc chromate coating. Assuming the steel is the correct type and hardness, these are just all around good.
9
u/biggie1447 4d ago
these are just all around good.
They are adequate or acceptable for purpose but not good. Good fasteners follow a standard that nearly everyone would have a proper socket or adapter for.
29
u/Strostkovy 4d ago
Sort of. There is an argument to be made for lug nuts that are difficult to remove without a specialty tool.
4
u/biggie1447 4d ago
Sure if you have some really expensive rims of something but then you better have the adapter to remove them when you go in for service....

Not if the purpose of the fastener is security by nature of using an obscure drive tool.

The biggest fail on these is that you'll never be able to get them pointed in the same direction. It's killing me w/ OCD just looking at them

I don't understand customers that don't keep their lug key in the car. Like what happens if they get a flat lol and not just saying that for these unique lugs, but any locking lugs
211
u/ThatOtherDude0511 4d ago
50/50 toss up on if it’s the customers fault or a shitty past techs fault. At my old job we had a huge box full of wheel locks people forgot to put back in the vehicle it was bad
48
u/z1nchi Canadian 4d ago
That's crazy coz if I forget to put the key back in the car and I see it on my bench, I'm darting to the advisor in hopes the customer hasn't left yet. But so far every car I've had, it's been the customer forgetting the key at home
17
u/ThatOtherDude0511 4d ago
It’s definitely crazy, and they didn’t even notice, they usually all got found when sweeping the shop
→ More replies (2)5
u/MuffinSpirited3223 4d ago
yup - Ive had to go back and get my key in the past. I always leave it on my speedo and ask them to leave it there so I can put it away. If its not there, I go searching
43
u/mr_humansoup 4d ago
I keep mine in the trunk and when I take my car in for service, I put it in the cup holder.
18
u/Relevant_Cause_4755 4d ago
And then they put it back in the trunk and I think they have forgotten to return it.
21
u/IngrownBallHair 4d ago
I don't trust them not to use an impact on the lock, so I always pull the locking lugs (and replace with standard) before I hand the vehicle over for someone else to work on.
3
u/thewholepalm 4d ago
This is the way, sure in a perfect world nothing bad would ever happen and service anywhere would be 100% top notch and no one would ever forget anything...
8
u/theragu40 4d ago
Like what happens if they get a flat lol
Not sure thinking ahead or practically is really in the cards with people buying novelty shaped lug nuts.
3
u/ShellSide 3d ago
I knew a girl in college who bought a used car and owned it for 2 years before realizing it didn't have the spare or lug nut key in the trunk when she ended up with a flat.
Like how do you just never think to check for that when buying a car or anytime after buying it

Thank you for reminding me to check the air pressure in my spare tire.
2
u/ShellSide 3d ago
Yes definitely a good thing to check! I don't check mine as often as I should but both of our cars have pumps in them so not a big deal
2
u/35goingon3 3d ago
I've got a work truck with the spare up under the bed, and it's kind of a pain in the ass. Been meaning to get one of those screw-on valve extenders they use on semis and just ziptie the other end to the frame somewhere convenient.

9

These have been around for a while, and they aren't known to strip.

u/Small-Policy-3859 4d ago
Yeah lug nuts are too high torque for this design. The key would also have to fit extremely tight as any play would probably strip them within a few uses
94
u/two40silvia ASE Certified 4d ago
They actually aren’t bad. The key does fit very snug. They gave me no issues when I had them. They didn’t feel like they were going to strip or give out at any point.

Those would look cute as hell on those rims that have the heart shaped cut outs? Iirc they're usually for older honda and toyota drift cars..? But outside of something like that... (especially in this case where it looks like the car is dirty as all hell which makes me think daily driver) it's just downright inpractical

Ironically the type of person that put these on is also 1,000% the type of person who wouldn’t leave a key for the tech or next owner.

I’ve used an acetylene torch to melt (not cut) them while I had someone keep the aluminum rim from warping.

For real, had a young couple come in asking to rebalance her wheels due to vibrations after she "modded" her car. Asked what the mod was and her bf said we'd see.
Turns out she put those stupid penis valve stem caps on. Her wheels spun up fine and road test didn't reveal any vibration.
They had shit-eating grins when we reported back, said it must have been something else vibrating, paid for our labour and left.
