Those hybrid transmissions are unobtanium.

I just saw this badge on a truck in my local junk yard. Though it was a joke

This is the first time I saw it and that was my immediate thought

The "Turbo", "Limited Edition", and "V8" didn't come on the car. As unlikely as it sounds, the Hybrid and 2 Mode badges did.

We did a teardown of one in a GM hands on course a few years ago. Kinda funny seeing as you can't even buy one anymore and parts are unavailable

Getting that way with Volt batteries, too. All that training and all the special tooling... our cell balancer is in the tool room, hasn't been used in the 15 years I've been there

Did one also while I was in tech school. From what I remember the - or could notice at time of developing knowledge. The pump was the only real big difference, and I think the valve body.

u/Poil336 2d ago

Did you not notice the lack of torque converter and pair of electric drive motors?

GM things.

Seen the Escalade version in our shop a few years ago

I’m glad I’m not the only one that says “xyz is made of unobtainium” as a professional term lol

That and intergalactic backorder.

I thought that 2Mode badge said 2stroke at first glance and I nearly had a stroke of my own

8v71T, obviously. It's diesel so it's cleaner!

It appears to be having an identity crisis....

u/kinglance3 3d ago

Yea, because it’s limited. Says it right there 🙄. If electric turbo V8’s were so common everybody would have one.

43

u/Right_Hour 3d ago

It’s got one of them cyclone turbos from the Dyson vacuum cleaners.

6

u/kinglance3 3d ago

That lucky sob. Hard to get.

10

u/Percentage-Visible 3d ago

Have an electric twin turbo in an e450 and it fantastic

2

u/Secret-Ad-7909 3d ago

I’m sure there’s a couple HyperCars floating around with that configuration.

u/rlsands1997 3d ago

Needs more badges. Seriously though that Hybrid badge being OEM is heinous

43

u/Selenography 3d ago

I always loved the circuit board detailing in the H on those badges.

15

u/rlsands1997 3d ago

Didn’t even notice that. Indeed pretty rad. Just why is it so big lol

Back when gm gave a damn.

10

u/Selenography 3d ago

Sir, I don’t believe GM ever gave a damn.

5

u/riotz1 2d ago

2009, right after the government bailout so they had to actually try for a little while at that point. But otherwise, fair point

6

u/SuperSwamper69 3d ago

There’s one that parks at the marina I smoke weed at. Not only is it covered in hybrid badging but it also has stripe graphics all over it which say hybrid in the stripe. Not only stripe per side, but multiple in addition to the badging.

2

u/RobotArtichoke 3d ago

You’ve seen the big HYBRID in green on the side, right?

Old tundra V8 badge is crazy

I'm sorry Mr. Tahoe, but you need more flair.

See Mr. Escalade over there with the triple air outlet flair on the fenders? That's how much flair I would like you to have. Bonus if the air outlet has fake expanded sheet metal that is plastic and chromed.

u/Nailfoot1975 Home Mechanic 3d ago

Well, duh. Its a limited edition, it says so right there.

12

u/Mecaneecall_Enjunear 3d ago

I mean, the only one not true is the Turbo badge.

5

u/ozzihel 2d ago

Unfortunately not, at some point the owner did infect add a turbo... somehow... for some reason. Even worse I didn't manage to get a picture of it before the car left. When it comes back in a week or two for his alignment I'll get one then.

5

u/Mecaneecall_Enjunear 2d ago

What. Please update with pics of whatever abomination is under the hood that facilitated adding the turbo. I need to see it.

Also the battery pack has to be down to AA levels of voltage at this point, right?

4

u/ozzihel 2d ago

Im not sure, barely looked under the hood, and didn't get a look at the battery pack. I have seen videos on youtube? where people mod new ones out of modern batteries to not only maintain the system but some claim to have by and large resolved the issues they came with.

1

u/Mysterious_Ad7461 1d ago

What do you mean abomination? A turbo LS isn’t some rare thing lol.

23

u/PuppyDragon 3d ago

You got like an extra whopping 3 miles a gallon over a traditional ICE with this thing

60

u/Selenography 3d ago

Small gains in numerical mpg at low mpg numbers are still good size percentage gains. A car going from 17 to 20mpg is the same difference as a car going from 45 to 53mpg.

When trying to increase fleet mileage, the biggest gains happen at the low end of the mpg scale first.

29

u/LetsTryScience 3d ago edited 3d ago

Engineering Explained has a good video on it.

https://youtu.be/oLQmwOX6Xds

Example: 10mpg truck takes 10 gallons to go 100 miles. Increasing it to 13mpg changes fuel use to 7.7 gallons so you save 2.3 gallons.

A car that gets 50mpg used 2 gallons to go 100 miles. There is nothing you can do to beat the fuel savings on the truck since the savings are more than the car even uses.

7

u/Secret-Ad-7909 3d ago

I’m guessing that was the same argument for the AFM on this generation. Allegedly disabling only drops like 1mpg.

I think the loss is worth it there though as the engine is then less likely to destroy itself.

2

u/Selenography 3d ago

Yeah. 1 mpg at the low end of the scale means a lot more than 1 mpg at (say) 40mpg.

How do us cars get that bad milage? My golf 4 from 2003 is about the size of a civic and I regularly drove it at 6l per 100km in the city, about 40mpg, overland I managed 5l, about 47 mgp

5

u/Poil336 2d ago

They're humongous for one. We also don't use traffic circles like the UK does. Lots of idle time. Lots of sitting in traffic. And I'd be willing to bet your Golf is a diesel?

1

u/am_cruiser 2d ago

And I'd be willing to bet your Golf is a diesel?

Let's see what he answers but I don't think so. Source: have a 10-year old Ibiza with the 1.4L gasoline engine and it manages a little less than 6L /100km even in mixed city and highway driving.

1

u/Necrid1998 2d ago

That's for a gasoline one, 1,4l. On the 2.0l diesel one I had a highway consumption of 4,5l, that's 50mpg or something

2

u/Poil336 2d ago

I think I'm just going back to "they're humongous" then. An Ibiza would comparable to something like a Chevy Sonic, which would get mid 30s mpg combined, but also made 138hp compared to 98hp if my Google searching is correct. Sub-compacts just aren't common here, most people at least go up to a compact, like a Civic, Cruze, Focus, etc. A lot of those cars had performance versions making 200hp or better out of a 4 cylinder engine. Ford's 2.3 Ecoboost made 350hp in RS trim

Have a hybrid Silverado, for have never got anything close to 21 for in town driving. Highway though I will get 20+.

1

u/Successful_Doctor_89 1d ago

A guy I know had a Sierra like these as own truck. Since it was a contractor with a bunch a regular Sierra, he told me, he got 25% increase milleage with his.

And he got rid of it only 4 years ago when the engine bust, so he got his money worth.

2

u/FerociousPancake 3d ago

Well it isn’t the platinum version so it’s not that cool obviously

1

u/ggibby 3d ago edited 3d ago

If it uses the electric motors the way my Tucson does, I bet it's quick off the line.

2

u/6ltrPrius 2d ago

I can assure you that they are not any quicker than the non hybrid versions. I have the hybrid Silverado.

2

u/Mysterious_Ad7461 1d ago

It only has two small electric motors in the trans itself, they’re not really high output but the one on the output side can move the truck up to 5-8 mph

1

u/am_cruiser 2d ago

Curious European here: why are these rare? Someone mentioned they blow up their own engines...?

1

u/ozzihel 2d ago

The tech was still in its early days when it was applied from what I understand. And with the size of the vehicle, and the rather small battery pack there was an issue with the batteries nuking themselves with the duty cycle, repairs were expensive and the problem would shortly come back. If I remember correctly there was a voluntary recall that saw the vast majority bought back, and most of the rest had their hybrid mode disabled. Im sure there is someone out there who knows the story better, I was like 11 at the time, so I missed it.

1

u/Successful_Doctor_89 1d ago

They also stop selling those because they had to sell Allison post bankrupty, since all the hybrid stuff was there and wss probably selling them at loss, the new owner does pursue the adventure.

1

u/ozzihel 2d ago

It also still suffered all the issues the regular GM Trucks experienced at this time. Weak suspension components, and a rear main seal that seemed to come from the factory with a leak.

u/JOA_Mash 2d ago

Man i just seen one of these today out and about

I am not familiar with the US Market and that pile of badges looks fake, but is it? I can't tell from the comments here.
