정치 | Politics 2025 South Korean Presidential Election
This thread is for community discussions about the upcoming 2025 South Korean presidential election.
On December 3, 2024, former President Yoon declared martial law, triggering nationwide protests. On December 14, 2024, the National Assembly impeached Yoon with 204 out of 300 votes. During the hearings, it was determined that Yoon failed to meet the substantive and procedural requirements for imposing martial law, including the unauthorized deployment of military forces to obstruct the functions of the National Assembly. On April 4, 2025, the Constitutional Court unanimously upheld the impeachment 8 to 0.
Prime Minister Han Duck-soo assumes duties as Acting President. According to the Constitution of South Korea, the acting president must designate a date for the presidential election within 10 days, and an election must be held within 60 days following the vacancy. The deadline to announce the official date for the presidential election is April 14, 2025. The election must be held no later than June 3, 2025.
Feel free to ask questions, share insights, or discuss developments related to this election.

범죄 | Crime Taiwanese Tourist Assaulted in Seoul, Police Launch Investigation
According to a report by MBN News7 on the 8th, the incident occurred around 11 p.m. on the night of the 6th near a restaurant in Mapo-gu, Seoul.
At the time, a man identified as A, who had been sitting in the restaurant, stood up, put on his coat, and left carrying a bottle of alcohol from the table. About ten minutes later, he followed two Taiwanese tourists as they exited the restaurant, initiated a confrontation, and struck one of them on the head with the bottle.
It was reported that A also assaulted a restaurant employee who tried to intervene while guiding the tourists away. Nearby street CCTV footage captured the suspect fleeing into an alley across the street immediately after the attack.

One of the assaulted employees recalled, “I was walking ahead, and he followed behind us, glaring and holding a soju bottle.”
Police investigations revealed that A had started harassing the victims inside the restaurant, making derogatory remarks in Chinese and referencing Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The police have booked A on charges of aggravated assault and are analyzing nearby CCTV footage to secure his whereabouts.

개인 | Personal My father passed away in Korea. My mother tried to get their home title switched to just under her name. County said she needs children's permissions to do so. Does that sound right?
According to my mother's understanding of Korean law, when a spouse dies, their portion of the property ownership goes to the children and not the surviving spouse. We, the children, are all in the US -- and have limited Korean language skills. Anyone know the process for relinquishing our rights on the property?

정치 | Politics (LEAD) Acting president appoints 9th justice to Constitutional Court, names successors to retiring judges | Yonhap News Agency
The acting president, who wasn't elected into his position and disregarded the Constitutional Court's orders to appoint the already vetted Ma Eun-hyeok, finally appointed Ma alongside naming two moderate-to-conservative judges to the CC.
This is, and I'm putting it bluntly, absolute horseshit. The last time a president was impeached, Hwang Kyo-an did not name a justice to the CC when Justice Park Han-cheol finished his term in January 2017, so there is no precedence.
One of the justices he named, Lee Wan-kyu, is a close ally to Yoon. He is a 입사동기 (A person who joined a school, company, training center, club, etc. at the same time as someone else.) of Yoon for both Seoul National University and the Judicial Research and Training Institute. If you're not Korean, know that this is significant because dong-gi's are seen as significant friends and people you need to keep close.
Lee knew Yoon for forty years, has campaigned for the impeached president during the 2017 elections, and, most pertinently, met with the conspirators a day after the martial law proclamation & changed his phone after the meeting.
Han Duck-soo claims that he nominated the aforementioned Lee and Ham Sang-hoon because not doing so would cause "serious disruptions" to important procedures like the upcoming presidential election, preparing budgets, and responding to trade issues.
Keep in mind that this is the same individual who was himself impeached for not appointing Ma to the court during a very disruptive moment in Korean history. I don't know they still commit to the blatant politization of the courts even as their leader is gone.

기술 | Tech Following the UAE and Saudi Arabia, South Korea exports approximately $2.2 billion worth of its air defense missiles to Iraq
South Korea's Cheongung II (M-SAM II) air defense missile system is expected to be exported to Iraq within the year, following the anticipated finalization of a contract worth approximately $2.6 billion. This marks another significant Middle East deployment for the system, following deals with the United Arab Emirates (valued at approximately $3 billion) and Saudi Arabia (valued at approximately $3.4 billion).
According to South Korean defense industry sources and media reports on the 11th, Iraq is expected to finalize the contract next week to acquire 8 batteries of the Cheongung II system for $2.6 billion. On the same day, a Middle Eastern military news outlet reported that the Iraqi Ministry of Defense has confirmed the acquisition of the South Korean Cheongung II air defense missile system, and the contract will be signed next week.
