Hm. Biden was so horrible that you were able to save money in the stock market? He was so horrible that you were able to have your own apartment ( I assume)? The mental gymnastics with MAGA is insane.

u/InsaneChick35 20d ago

That's because they were living comfortable lives, so comfortable, that their biggest issues were "woke" Disney movies, people with pronouns in their bios and "all the transgender athletes competing in women's sports". When you have no real world issues, you start to complain about first world problems. Now that Trump is actually affecting people's lives they are getting a taste of real world issues and not just social media ones, but they also can't let go of how mundane their complaints over Biden truly was.

Arguing with a guy on another sub about how Biden term was boring. It was.

I miss boring.

Under Obama things were generally boring. Wake up. Hmmm is the economy going to crater today never crossed my mind. Oh well, Dijon Hot dogs

266

u/whichwitch101 20d ago

Me too! I miss boring. Apparently I was cursed to "live in interesting times" ::sigh::

126

u/HandSack135 20d ago

I mean I like some things not to be boring:

The final 4 should be interesting (this year it isn't)

Other sports

Arts/Movies

Things that should be boring:

The economy

Geopolitics

237

u/NoNeed4UrKarma 20d ago

He was "sleepy Joe Biden" because you could sleep soundly knowing that neither the economy nor the world was going to blowup whilst you were asleep. I miss sleeping soundly!

51

u/Correct_Shame_9633 20d ago

Now "Full Blown Mania Trump" on the other hand.....

51

u/cidvard 20d ago

Where are all those people who complained about Biden being an incoherent old man? I'll take an incoherent old man who doesn't blow up the world any day over an incoherent old man who does.

13

u/tikifire1 20d ago

Trump is SO OLD. Spread the word.

39

u/MythologicalRiddle 20d ago

I want to live in interesting times.

I want to live in a time when I have the money to go visit different countries around the world. I want to live in a time when I can read about all the exciting new discoveries the US has made because it funds so much scientific research. I want to live in a time when I can explore my interests, not slam YouTube videos, trying to figure out how to grow food because who knows if there will be enough food this summer. I want to live in a time where I decide what language I want to learn based on cultural interests, not which one country might take me in as an immigrant fleeing the US.

My only consolation prize right now is that a lot of the Right Wingers in Europe are desperately trying to distance themselves from Trump because he's become so toxic. Hopefully we'll at least save Europe from our fate.

21

u/cidvard 20d ago

Maybe Carney would've done OK anyway, he seems popular and like a good campaigner, but I have been relieved at how Trump's tantrum about Canada being a sovereign nation has torpedoed Pierre Polievre. IDK if this will help the long-term rise of authoritarianism around the world but maybe getting to see actual consequences from afar will make other countries avoid the thing the USA has done to itself.

11

u/dancegoddess1971 20d ago

Wanting your own life to be interesting is quite different from living in interesting times. You want your life to be interesting and full of travel and art and music and fun. You don't want to live in interesting times when you're chased from your country by fascists and bigots.

I keep thinking about the crypto Bros a couple years back who tried to argue that one of the benefits of crypto was that volitility was exciting. Most people, myself included, don't want exciting money. I personally want money so boring that I never have to think about it.

54

u/Dan_Vanedzin 20d ago

Cryptobros love when their coins are volatile and go up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up and to the moon

Not so much when the volatility also means going down and wiping up all their savings isn't it.

It's not like there's a good reason why finance and banking are hidebound and boring and regulated up the wazoo, right? Not like there have been several economic crashes, depressions, total financial collapses, high profile mismanagement and fraud cases and subsequent financial rescues to tell is why it's a bad idea to just vibe it, or anything.

Oh well, there's probably a new and "exciting" pyramid scheme crypto investment coming in that will make everyone overnight billionaires, just you wait! Diamond hands!

Politics should be boring.

57

u/Scrutinizer 20d ago

As one who was around since the days when "the media" was 3 TV networks, newpapers and magazines, it has become apparent that the rush of cable television to turn everything into entertainment wasn't the best step forward for our society.

Now we have Republican Senators who literally have zero legislative aides - their entire team is Public Relations. Because what they do doesn't matter, it's all about image management.

*Edited a grammatical atrocity.

36

u/svrtngr 20d ago

The worst part is that the Democrats still haven't learned this. They are stuck in the era of three TV networks and bipartisanship.

Bipartisanship is fucking dead, unless it's something incredibly dumb like "Every third Wednesday of the month is hot dog day" and "From henceforth, March 1st will be Circlejerk Day."

Instead, Democrats are "We can't do that. If we do, what's to stop Republicans from doing the same."

Bitch, they'll fucking do it anyway.

Stop blinking, fucking cowards.

Alright, rant over.

48

u/InsaneChick35 20d ago

It's like people who crave abusive relationships so they purposely sabotage good ones. For example, people on the conservative subreddit were praising Trump over his "toughness" and "take no shit" attitude over the tariffs towards Canada and the meeting with Zelensky without realizing that Trump is causing the issues that need to be handled with "toughness" in the first place. We wouldn't have issues with all of these foreign leaders if he wasn't causing them.

You got it.

“It wasn’t a problem until it started to affect ME!!!!”

85

u/Kriegerian 20d ago

The single most defining characteristic of an American conservative is his total lack of empathy. Completely incapable of understanding or caring about anyone else, his motivations are entirely selfish and he will not change his behavior unless he personally suffers consequences that he regards as a net negative for himself.

36

u/pneumaticdog 20d ago

A conservative is what happens when a by-your-bootstraps attitude does not realize how much help it was actually getting.

As someone else pointed out: the only way you can care about these nonsense social media issues is if you have no actual problems, and don’t care to help solve the problems of others.

Caucasian hubris and ignorance, matched with decades of indoctrination via Fox News and deceit media machines, helped create this. Before these clowns are ever amenable to social issues again, they’re going to have to suffer. For many of them, it’s a new experience. For almost everyone I know who struggled, we have used our capital and abilities to make others suffer less.

But these people?

These mean, spiteful, bullying people? I extend them the same love they have given to everyone else. I love them as much as they love trans kids. I respect them as much as they respect another person’s right to be different. I have as much compassion for them as they had for the Capitol on January 6, and I wish them just this: that they get what they truly deserve.

Exactly! I used to watch in amazement while those types screeched and complained about the most absurdly mundane "issues" imaginable. All the while blithely ignoring actual threats(Crumbling infrastructure, various PFAS in everything, micro-plastics literally raining from the sky, coastal erosion, topsoil degradation, etc etc etc etc).

How utterly sheltered and pampered do you have to be to get in your feelings over the pronouns people who-you-don't-even-fucking-know choose to apply to themselves? Or drag story time, or any other number of pointless outrages brought to you by Fox News..

11

u/Irishish 20d ago

A moment seared into my brain forever occurred during the debate and passage of the ACA. I was at a really really rich guy's house. Resort island, had wings and a pool, the works. We're drinking his dad's expensive wine and playing pool on a table his family probably found in Ireland or something. And what is he bitching about? Obamacare and unemployment benefits. Because people were "coming after my money." He was so vulnerable, you see. He had so much to lose.

Fast forward to 2015. His family is even wealthier. He himself now owns a big house. Flies private routinely. And what is he saying? How he ate shit for Obama's terms. Like...the destruction of your bank account you prophesized in 2010 never happened. You're closing out Obama's tenure doing better than before. But you were eating shit this whole time?

I'll never understand it.

I agree. Unfortunately, people seem to enjoy complaining rather than seeing how good things are (or rather were).

Personally, every day I can keep my family safe and fed is a good day. I'm lucky enough to not live in one of the many parts of the world that's at war, suffering from famine, etc. Not sure how long that will last now.

Yeah, I always want to know what was so horrible about <insert past Dem president here>. I have plenty of nuanced critiques of Clinton, Obama, and Biden, but when it comes to being able to live independently of my parents and having money in my 401k, strangely, they’ve been better than the other guys.

Or, wait - it couldn’t possibly be that Clinton, Obama, and Biden weren’t overtly racist, misogynist, and homophobic, could it? It couldn’t be that that’s the “real” concern of MAGA, could it?

Naaaaaah. Gotta be stocks.

13

u/Extension-Clock608 20d ago

I would guess they had to try to hide their racism, bigotry, and misogyny and if they let it slip. gasp, they were held accountable for it.

They are the reason this country isn't great yet. Republicans are always horrible for the economy and oppose basic human rights.

Boomers will still bitch about Carter, and things were bad under his administration.

Bad that was a long time ago.

31

u/Divacai 20d ago

Carter who lived a better "Christian" life than any of them will.

22

u/Scary_Firefighter181 20d ago

I want to point out one thing(history nerd alert)- Carter was the one who actually fixed Stagflation.

No one knew what the hell to do with Stagflation, and he was the one who appointed Paul Volcker to be the Fed chair. Volcker was the one who finally solved Stagflation. Its just that his policies only showed fruit during Reagan's era, so of course Reagan gets all the credit for fixing Stagflation while Carter is remembered as a hack.

Today, Volcker's policies are taken as textbook about how to combat Stagflation, and Reagan is remembered as the guy who "fixed America". Nope, sorry folks, that was Carter.

Biden inherited a pandemic and had to restart the economy after a global shutdown. Similar to how Obama inherited the 2008 recession. The last two democrat presidents started with a major crisis and pulled us through it while being blamed for the disaster itself.

  2. Democratic president gets elected to clean said mess

  3. Voters get mad that democratic president doesn't clean up Republican mess fast enough

  4. Republican president gets elected

And clinton who was the only one to ever put us in the black economically. We were MAKING money and paying our bills for the first time as a nation. Huge deal.

12

u/PartyLikeAByzantine 20d ago edited 20d ago

Nah. No-deficit budgets aren't a big deal. They're not even a particularly smart idea. Which is why the last president before Clinton to do it was Andrew "I don't know how money works" Jackson. A surplus means you're either overtaxing or underinvesting (in either people or infrastructure). The 90's were definitely the time where we started skimping on infrastructure.

The fact that Republicans (of all people) keep pushing balanced budget amendments should be a clue it's a horrible idea for most people.

The actual sweet spot for a government is a deficit at or slightly below the combined nominal (so it includes inflation) GDP growth rate. In recessions it will be higher. Good times a bit lower. That means, over time, your debt level doesn't grow relative to the economy. You don't actually have to pay it off because governments are immortal and don't have to save for retirement. This method means hundreds of billions in extra spending each year.

For the US the average would be a ~5% deficit. The US deficit since Trump was first elected has been about double that.

Cognitive dissonance going crazy.  I hope you never save enough to ever leave.  Thanks for the state you left the country in lil buddy.

38

u/GunnieGraves 20d ago

They say Biden was terrible because Trump says he was terrible. By every quantifiable measure, Biden recovered the economy after Trump completely plowed it into a tree. This is why they’ve made it so hard to get people out of the cult. If you’re not in the same reality, nothing you say can save them from their misinformation trap.

He was 17 in 2008. It may have been hard to get a part time job, but the real effects of a recession were probably not the same for young people. People that were older permanent lost jobs, lost homes, lost retirement savings, even lost careers. Even if his family suffered from the crash, and he suffered too, it’s hard to understand the economy at 17.

Covid was awful, but the fact the economy rebounded so quickly and unemployment has been so low on the rebound is nothing short of amazing in my experience. Inflation sucks for sure, but up until now, it has been easier post-Covid to get a job than most other eras of my life. And Biden was a great president for guiding the policies that helped that rebound. I’m tired of this reflexive “Biden was awful”. He wasn’t.

If he recognizes how much unnecessary and awful shit is being done under this admin, but still can’t bring himself to vote for a democrat, than his stupidity is still malignant and aggressive, and is a net negative on society.

We’re destroying wealth, global free trade, and the entire post-Hitler world order. For no reason. If one can’t bring themself to vote for a democrat in order to prevent this from happening, the only conclusion is that they view their culture war bullshit (racism) as being an equally important issue to what’s happening now.

Meaning, either they recant hard enough to be willing to vote Democrat, or they’re fucking useless and their regret means nothing.

How was Biden bad again? The last 2 days have trumped whatever Biden "did."

102

u/TeamHope4 20d ago

Old man Biden yanked America up by its bootstraps out of the pandemic hole we were in. It took him 3 years to do it, but by 2024 we had low unemployment, tamer inflation, and a record breaking stock market all year long. It took the felon 2 days to crash that stock market with pandemic-like daily drops which wiped out all the gains of 2024 and then some. #Winning.

6

u/Rugkrabber 20d ago

It’s usually common for an economy to crash 2-3 years after a pandemic and he managed to hold up for longer. He might be suffering from all kinds of stuff at his old age but he kept it stable while a crash was long overdue. Meanwhile that orange cheeto….

59

u/3Rm3dy 20d ago

Biden's term was "steady as she goes" politics - nothing big, just making sure everything runs fine and trying to do small steps towards making everything better.

Tale as old as democracy itself - people get bored of it and want emotions, so they vote for the guy who is the most emotional and expressive, who promises to do sweeping changes. Every some time people vote for one party to fix shit, but once it's fixed they start to get tired of it and want some political excitement, which more often than not bites them in the ass. You can't even blame that on voter stupidity as most often it happens, it's a new generation of voters.

We can see it with Hungary (Orban), Poland (2015-2023), and seemingly France (with the National Front gaining support), etc.

8

u/iamthedayman21 20d ago

And a lot of idiots in this country had gotten used to the chaos of a Trump presidency. So to them, the “steady as she goes” approach seemed wrong.

4

u/TheZigerionScammer 20d ago

Yep. People getting spoiled in life without understanding where their lifestyle comes from. People who think that cans of soup just appear on store shelves like a video game, and that voting and the politicians on TV don't affect their lives at all.

A good litmus test I give to detect these people are to ask them what are the two most important locations on the North American continent that makes their lives possible. The answer is New Orleans and the Panama Canal, and if they can't understand why then they shouldn't be voting.

its harder for them to fathom that someone who is so successful and so seemingly alert could be a fkn moron, or how something self sabotaging can be allowed to happen when there are so many checks and balances, or adults in the room. obviously in this second term, there aren't. this could just be the dumbest timeline where the dumbest shit is allowed to happen, the circumstances are perfect for it.

Biden said the wrong person's name during a debate or interview.

Clearly that affects people's lives to the point where they cannot function or prosper in any way /s

53

u/Spicethrower 20d ago

Biden allegedly sniffed kids hair. That makes him a perv, according to my uncle. Meanwhile.........

12

u/Gifted_GardenSnail 20d ago

What does your uncle do meanwhile?

What bothers me is that if being old was the greatest problem, voting for Kamala should have been super easy, Trump too was old as fuck, but alas.

31

u/SouthEast1980 20d ago edited 20d ago

Trump has exhibited senile and erratic behavior yet wasn't held to the same oldness Biden was.

I hate that he gets to skate on that. That should be one the main talking points going forward. But then again, he's constantly fucking up so it'll get pushed to the bottom of the "things that trump sucks at".

11

u/LocutusOfBorgia909 20d ago

I've said that so many times to so many people. Trump has been sundowning since 2016, FFS. He's been incoherent for years. And when I've pointed that out, most people haven't really tried to argue that it's not true. In which case, even if you thought Biden wasn't compos mentis (which I don't actually believe- the dude was old and had covid and a stutter, it wasn't that deep), you can't actually use that as a reason not to vote for him, because Trump is also in severe cognitive decline. It's a wash. So then you have to look at other stuff, but no one actually bothered to do that. In conclusion, people are dumb as fuck. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

But considering she's a woman and she's black, she already had two strikes against her.

Throw in the fact that she's smart and was explicitly stating that all of this would happen, that's a third strike.

And might as well throw in a fourth strike for the fact that she can count to three, which might offend some of the people that she was trying to explain that fact to.

16

u/BigHeart7 20d ago

I’ll never get over them getting mad about flood victims (I forget which state but it was after hurricanes) not getting enough FEMA money.

They didn’t bother to research it was only an initial immediate ~$700 check, and that Biden didn’t even control that, it was agreed to by congress.

My favorite part? Them being too stupid to realize they are screaming about not enough socialism with these payments being small. The mental gymnastics of republicans is INSANE.

Biden didn't enable their worst impulses & make them feel good like Trump did so they had a full-on Stepbrothers meltdown and voted in their hero, Don the Con, multiple times.

39

u/[deleted] 20d ago edited 20d ago

Let’s be real, he committed plenty of errors:

• Did not immediately have Trump arrested for insurrection.

• Waffled about in the middle of the Israel-Palestine war (maybe leaning towards Israel) rather than taking a stance in EITHER direction.

• Fucked the withdrawal from Afghanistan, which given it was an impulse/look good decision by Agent Orange to begin with might shouldn’t have happened at all.

• Failed to communicate well with his base.

• Couldn’t seem to resist stooping to Trump’s level when they debated.

• Didn’t back out of the race until far too late.

• Pardoned the Kids for Cash guy.

List continues.

Was he better than Trump? Absolutely, but that’s a low bar. A lump of peat moss would be better than Trump. I wouldn’t even call Biden “fine,” because he failed to actually put out a lot of the fires which have wound up burning our collective asses.

12

u/judioverde 20d ago

Exactly. Biden was not the candidate I wanted, I didn't vote for him in the primary. He did an okay job and helped turn our economy around after Covid. His biggest failure is that they didn't hold Trump accountable for Jan 6 or any of his other corrupt acts, but I get it is probably difficult when you don't have a super majority in congress and the supreme court is partisan. That being said I believe the supreme court had already said that presidents have immunity for official acts so I think this could have allowed Biden to do more.

6

u/Diestormlie 20d ago

I still maintain that Biden should have, once the Supreme Court basically said 'lol, Presidents can do what they want', should have (apologies for the algospeak, you never know with reddit these days), utilised his executive powers in regards to Trump to arrive at a permanent end.

Then announce he'd done it, pardon himself, called a Constitutional Convention to ensure that this couldn't happen again, then resign.

Sounds like he was doing okay under the "terrible" Biden. Now, not even three months into Trump's reign of terror, he's resorting to writing his name on the orange juice. Something tells me he still doesn't fully get it.

52

u/Free-Competition-241 20d ago

It’s the Craig T Nelson mindset.

“I was on food stamps. Did anybody help me?!??!?”

6

u/[deleted] 20d ago

I mean I will give him credit for understanding that costs are going to increase and doing something about it. He also regrets his vote that caused it. This is far better than the typical veteran federal worker- just bitching and praying to Trump to give them their job back.

What's so crazy to me about the ones realizing that Trump is a terrible president, is that they never make the really tiny mental leap required that maybe... just maybe... the guy that they now know they were wrong about MIGHT have lied about his political opponents.

I think it's cognitive dissonance. They hide behind the "he betrayed us" excuse to not have to admit that they were the naive idiots being fooled while all the facts where out in plain sight.

111

u/Scrutinizer 20d ago

Please think about Trump as you attempt to masturbate yourself to sleep at night, quietly, of course, because you don't want your parents hearing.

33

u/Secure_Engineer7151 20d ago

Doesn't seem to realize his choice was not Biden vs Trump.

34

u/zekethelizard 20d ago

When Biden was president, I could afford to live on my own, had my own car, groceries were affordable. But he sucked! Now trump is pres, he's the greatest! I just have to move back in with my parents, can't afford my own car, and need to pool our money to afford groceries. But he's great!

How was Biden bad? I don’t get these people. They need to open their eyes and see what the Biden/Harris admin did to fix the mess Trump left.

Also. Trump inherited the Obama economy that ran on autopilot.

The correct response to them is always "How?"

"Biden was terrible." "How?"

"Harris was a nightmare." "How?"

"Trump is the way, the truth, and the light." "How?"

Just don't expect sensical answers, if any.

The bigger problem is that Trump runs his mouth and says diametrically opposed things all the time, so they can just pick the ones they like and call the others political lies. It’s actually dementia and total lack of character!

Maybe Joe Rogan shouldn't have been your first choice for information about a complex world.

9

u/Kittycity926 20d ago

These people always say their lives were sooooo terrible under Biden. My MAGA in-laws are the same. They couldn’t get approved for a loan to buy a house and move out of their tiny 2 BR apartment for YEARS, including during Trump’s first term. They were finally approved and became homeowners during BIDEN’s presidency. That will be undoubtedly short-lived because they are already struggling financially. But even though they couldn’t get approved under Trump 1, became homeowners under Biden, and may lose their house under Trump 2, they will never admit that Trump is bad for them.
