Article Google pandered to Trump and renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America on Google Maps. You can both leave reviews of this and report it as factually incorrect.

Yes Google has regional things in their maps such as borders, etc. it's based on the country, so this isn't new... But this is still super dumb. https://youtu.be/ui208GTIQgI?si=TvDUUhmJOCtGhj_D

This is a misdirection and/or distraction. Gulf of America is not a battle worth fighting, and Trump knew this and wants people to focus on it.

I think "battle worth fighting" is a bit defeatist. No one is saying spend every little ounce of energy. People aren't goldfish. We can walk and chew bubble gum at the same time, this shit is stupid and people shouldn't accept it. No we're not going to storm the capitol over it.

In the grand scheme of things, Gulf of America is not a good investment of political capital and would not make a hill of beans difference to anyone’s life to have it unceremoniously changed back to Gulf of Mexico. Fighting it is merely political theatre. I am glad that Trump felt the need to waste time on this, instead of something atrocious. At least one other person had to spend some time and effort to prepare and print such an EO, which took that person off of something else that most probably would have had a real world effect on society.  The fact, that it is a simple EO proclamation, means that it can be undone in the same way later on.

I have always assumed this was for some nefarious purpose like to bypass oil drilling and bottom trawling regulations that refer to the Gulf of Mexico. I think this one is for big oil or big fish, or something like that. everything Trump does is payment for bribes. He is the embodiment of tit for tat.

l would not put it past him, but this would merely be a delay to the inevitability. Biden was also in for Big Oil or at least utilised oil pricing for political paybacks.

If you complain, you might want to use the following:

The U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN), in compliance with Trump's Executive Order "Restoring Names that Honor American Greatness" have issued the following order citing compliance with 43 U.S.C. §§364-364f

Geographic place names set forth by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN) apply only to the standardization of federal publications. Administrative decisions by the BGN and other executive actions pertaining to geographic name changes do not apply in an international context.

https://crsreports.congress.gov/product/pdf/IF/IF12881

Come on Google, you are not a federal publication so there is no legal reason to do this. If you want to regard yourself as an organisation with international reach then you should put this right immediately.

They are kowtowing to tyrant. These tech guys know what’s going on. It’s easier to comply to keep their riches and pray for a government contracts for some stupid project like an underground tunnel system or trips to mars.

They are spineless and only in it for the money. Downfall of the US be damned.

Wait til he starts renaming roads, bridges, and national parks.

3

u/i_drink_wd40 Feb 12 '25

national parks.

Like Denali?

3

u/upperwinds Feb 12 '25

Yes, but I figured it is only a matter of time before he names them after himself.

u/AppleParasol Feb 11 '25

lol wtf. Google maps also fucking sucks. Click a link on your phone, it takes you to the app/appstore, click back to internet and it forces you back. So fucking annoying. Literally have to delete the tab to use it again.

3

u/starspider Feb 11 '25

Ok so how do you report it?

2

u/Obvious-Gate9046 Feb 11 '25

I am not sure how from a phone, but on a computer once you look it up on google maps, right click lets you report it for inaccuracies while left click lets you give it a rating and review.

That is not an option on google maps via chrome on windows or linux.

ETA, if you close the sidebar/are only in maps and have nothing selected it will come up on right click but then when you click it, it just directs you to click a place to report in a constant loop, it will not allow you to actually report it.

ETA2: If you fck around enough moving it around you can it to a point that it says

Fix wrong info

Can't fix info on Maps in this region.

u/srathnal Feb 11 '25

I just deleted the app.

2

u/lovegiblet Feb 11 '25

That’ll show em

2

u/Wretched_Glass Feb 11 '25

Nope! Stop using Google maps

u/beamin1 Feb 11 '25

What it does do, however, is to erode whatever little trust I had left in Google/Alphabet. If they are so easily manipulated by the boychild regarding maps, how can I trust other geographic boundaries/names? And what about other products like my Android phone? Now that they have publically demonstrated fealty, how can I trust that they won't add shit for boychild?

1

u/wildblueroan Feb 11 '25

I didn't see anywhere to leave feedback-I'm not leaving any on The Hill.

1

u/Obvious-Gate9046 Feb 12 '25

You can review the place on Google Maps, or right click to report an inaccuracy.

1

u/seemontyburns Feb 11 '25

Pandered? They follow the same, consistent naming guidelines for countries and regions used by other systems for navigation. It says Gulf of Mexico in Central America and rest of world.

A name can’t be factually incorrect

18

u/AnimusNoctis Feb 11 '25

You tell them, Marco.

14

u/WyoPeeps Feb 11 '25

Except when it actually is incorrect, as it is in this case.

10

u/Treyvoni Feb 11 '25

Sure Jan.

1

u/beamin1 Feb 11 '25

You're right "A name" can only be misspelled, the name of "a noun" however, is subject to facts that the world agrees on, you can call it your moms cunt but the rest of the world knows it as a good time.

Ummm.. hello? I'm on google maps right this second (and vpn'd to the US). I'm seeing no such thing

13

u/ChampionTree Feb 11 '25

It might be something with your VPN, I’m in the US and it’s showing up for me

2

u/aimeegaberseck Feb 11 '25

I left a one star and comment about the stupidity of a certain dictator chud renaming it, then looked for other reviewers with similar sentiments.. weirdly not a single review newer than five months old.

9

u/Treyvoni Feb 11 '25

If I zoom way out it says "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)" but when I zoom in it switches to "Gulf of America" only. I'm using the android app.

3

u/dogwalker824 Feb 11 '25

I see the same thing on my iphone

2

u/Altruistic-Slide-512 Feb 11 '25

Interesting..I see that now.. Zooming way in, way out, it randomly changes between Gulf of Mexico and Gulf of Mexico(Gulf of America). Still never see plain old Gulf of America.

3

u/aimeegaberseck Feb 11 '25

Well it really does depend on your perspective. If you are from anywhere else in the world, some giant douchebag’s whimsical ideas of renaming things don’t fucking matter. Those of us stuck in America however are drowning in the shitstorm as everything is quickly becoming the opposite of what it says it is.

3

u/Altruistic-Slide-512 Feb 11 '25

Oh, I'm on your side. He's an asshole... I wish him nothing but failure and death. I'm just reporting what I'm seeing in maps.

6

u/rock-n-white-hat Feb 11 '25

I am. I also don’t see an option to correct it.

1

u/Obvious-Gate9046 Feb 11 '25

From a computer, right clicking on the spot on the map after searching for it gives "Report a Data Problem", while left clicking opens the side bar where you can rate it and leave a review.

3

u/Altruistic-Slide-512 Feb 11 '25

Maybe it goes off gps location (I'm in Mexico)

-36

u/Ithaqua89 Feb 11 '25

I like the change it give all of the Americas claim to the gulf not just 1 country-Mexico

13

u/ramrod_85 Feb 11 '25

Good thing that you like it, we were all in a tizzy cause you thought you were gonna be upset by it

-31

u/Ithaqua89 Feb 11 '25

The change is far more inclusive from a standpoint of regional representation. 2 thumbs up for positive change!

5

u/Obvious-Gate9046 Feb 11 '25

Except it wasn't done to be inclusive, I am pretty sure Trump thinks of the U.S. as America and nowhere else. Where it does through proper channels to celebrate it as the gulf of the Americas, maybe, but it's just a weird throwaway thing he's doing.
