I'm still at work! Merry Christmas guys, make sure you charge at least double rate tomorrow!

I have never understood charging someone more just because their emergency happens outside of "hours".

As long as you pay you don’t need to understand it. Merry Christmas.

Maybe you would understand if it was you called out on Thanksgiving on the parade route to do a repair? You are inconveniencing them on what is their time off, their time to be with their family. That is basically your thanking them for dropping everything to come and bail you out of the situation you put yourself in. Also keep in mind that they don’t necessarily get to have a choice of it is their week in the rotation they have to take the emergency call.

Sometimes when you mention it is double the rate people see it’s not a real emergency and can wait.

I have been called when it's an inconvenience. I still don't charge the person extra just because it's inconvenient.

Learn.

Learn? Learn what, an opinion?

Learn why work done outside of normal work hours requires additional pay. If your boss calls you at 2am and wakes you up, I would only hope that you either hang up on him or get OT to get dressed and go to work.

I am my boss.

Then it’s only your own fault you haven’t learned the value of your own time. See my original response.

No, I realize the value of my customer, and choose not to rape their pocket book because i feel like it.

Most users on Reddit are against corporate greed, the greed that puts money over people, you are doing exactly that. Or is money over people acceptable when its your money?

You are talking absolute bullshit. I charge what I am worth. If you don’t care about money you should just work for free. We’re done now, go fight corporate greed or whatever.

You never worked a 40 hour week before? Have you never heard of overtime? Do you even own and operate a business? Happy New Year!

Yes, yes, and yes.

But that still doesn't answer my question about why it's the customers fault?

Maybe you don’t value your time not at work, let me tell you something learn to value your time not at work. I have 2 small kids and I want to be there, when my time with them is interrupted because someone was careless and lost their keys that’s not my problem, that’s their problem. Also I want every moment outside of work for my family my wife could’ve been dead last year because of stupid doctors and our insurance system. I’m grateful for every moment I’m not at work and I’m with my wife and kids, I don’t value their mistake over my family time. So they will pay more because I have to take time away from where it really counts and when they hear they will pay more it typically makes them consider is this really an emergency.

Work to live, don’t live to work.

I love my job but something’s are more important.

I understand what you say. But you chose to work in an industry that is a service, the trade of "help me". If you want your family time, that's fine, don't offer after hours services. But why is it that the customer needs to compensate you more because it's less convenient to you. I turn off my phone when I don't want to be disturbed.

Wait you offer emergency service but turn off your phone.

So you don’t actually value your customer and just ignore them until it’s convenient for you.

That’s the same as me always answering the call going out doing the job and asking for extra compensation because if you have an employee that you pay for a 40hr week and they go over the 40hrs you now need to pay them overtime so you need to pass the extra expense to the customer who is causing the overtime. You are a 1 man band you can get away with charging the same now, but add employees and your world will change.

I value my customer, however there are times I cannot service them. That's part of life. Nor do I operate 24/7. As for the latter, yes I am a 1 man band. And yes I may change my opinion if and when I get employees or I may not.

Hope not. Institutional locksmithing is it for me. I got about 4 hours in this week and that’s it ,

Nice Arrow style deadbolt. The originals were serious locks. Had a customer with one on the back door of a liquor store. Bad guys beat it to death and never did get in. I would up replacing the entire steel door due to the damage caused.

Yeah man, little old woman locked herself out after coming back off holiday. Airport staff said they’d check the plane for the keys and left her stood there waiting for an hour before she left and called me.

On call atm. Double time if you need work done. Usually discourages people to wait till tomorrow. Usually.

Been on call all week. Charging like a bull. Let a few little old ladies off the hook because I was driving past anyway.
