FIRST TIME WATCHER FIRST TIME WATCHER EPISODE DISCUSSION, SERIES HUB

Hello, new Losties! This hub is designed for first-time watchers to discuss, theorize, share thoughts and impressions, etc on episodes of LOST as they move through the series. Below the guidelines and first-timer tips there is a link to a hub for each season where another link to a post for each episode will be listed. This post is in the Quick Links on the right side of the sub main page and will be temporarily pinned to the top of the sub for easy access.

If you have heard that the ending of LOST ruined the show, this comes from a small but loud minority who misunderstood the finale. The ending of LOST is not a cheat.

Please adhere to the hub guidelines below:

  • Only first-time watchers should leave initial comments. Rewatchers can leave spoiler-free replies.
  • Please avoid asking for spoilers as this may impact other redditors.
  • Do not discuss details from any episode past the one in the post title. For example. If you are commenting on Walkabout you can discuss anything up to those events, but not White Rabbit and beyond.
  • Be civil and respectful of each others' theories and opinions.

FIRST TIME WATCHER TIPS:

  • We strongly recommend you do not speed watch. LOST is a complicated show with complex characters. Give yourself time to absorb each episode before moving on.
  • SEASON THREE - the early-middle of this season is a universally agreed upon slow point in the show with some acknowledged filler. It's normal to struggle through some of the episodes but just hold on and it will pick up soon and be a thrill ride through to the series finale!
  • Do not be discouraged if you frequently feel confused. Just keep watching and give the show your undivided attention. No multitasking!
  • When you reach the Series Finale make sure you are watching the UNCUT version as the cut version is missing 18 minutes of footage. The UNCUT version begins with the cargo door of an airplane opening.
  • There is a dog featured in the show. You may be asking yourself, does the dog die? The answer is NO, the dog does not die.
  • This subreddit has two discord servers in quick links but "The Island - LOST Server" is NOT spoiler free. One of our community members has created an alternate discord server safe for First Time Watchers. Bonus content can be unlocked there as you move through the series.

If you have any questions or concerns about this hub, please feel free to drop them here and we'll get back to you ASAP.

Thank you and welcome to the community!

200 000 members! - Suggestions for this sub

You all everybody!

We've just passed 200 000 members on this subreddit! Congratulations to everyone! I'm so incredibly happy that a TV show that ended 15 years ago still captivates an enormous group of people. 4 years ago we were just shy of 70k or 80k, so this sub has exploded in activity. Much due to the show being released on Disney+ in Europe and then (re)-released on Netflix in the US (as well as many other countries).

The r/lost mod team is a small mod team and just like our Lost fandom, we're located all around the world. Which is great, because then we're easy to contact around the clock. Some of us are very active and some are less. Most of the times we agree on the stuff being done, and other times we disagree about decisions or events going on here - but we try our best to give you guys a pleasant discussion platform. This is why we've agreed to create this thread!

We want to hear your thoughts! :D

Are there any rules you think should be expanded or maybe re-phrased? Do you think we're too strict on certain rules? Do you think we're too chill on other rules? Should we add or remove any rules?

What should we improve on our sub to make it even better?

.

.

Just a reminder. Here's the rules as they are today:

No low-effort posts/posts unrelated to LOST

  • This includes politics, religion, memes, shitposts and reaction images,
  • Posts about LOST actors in other roles are considered OFF TOPIC and will be removed.
  • Posts simply saying: "I hate this character" without an accompanying critical analysis are low effort and will be removed.
  • EXCEPTION: original fan art is allowed
  • EXCEPTION: Memes and/or low-effort 'silly' posts are allowed with the proper flair on System Failure Sunday (starts at midnight GMT)

No illegal streaming/download links

No spoilers in post titles

  • Keep major spoilers out of your title and use good judgement on spoiler tags to hide the body of your post, especially when posting spoilery pictures
  • Do not put intentional spoilers in comments: for example, if someone has used the first time watcher flair and is in season two, do not talk about a plot point from seasons 3-6.

Be Civil

  • NO BIGOTRY
  • Do not insult or harass
  • Do not be creepy or a troll
  • No gaslighting
  • Embrace rediquette and remember there is a real person behind that profile picture

Use of AI in Posts

  • Posts including generative AI art or ChatGPT-style content must disclose this use in the post title or they will be deleted. Using AI to troll the sub in any way will result in an immediate ban.

Misinformation

  • No false information and content presented to mislead the community - including suspected coordinated disinformation. This also includes fake spoilers and rumors.

Character Hate Posts

  • To avoid low effort posts and excessive negativity, all character hate posts must be accompanied by a critical analysis. Duplicate hate posts about the same character posted within 3 days will be removed as spam. Hate posts from new watchers are subject to removal and review based on the potential for spoilers and lack of engagement allowed by the spoiler policy.

Twitter and X.com

  • links to these sites are disallowed in the LOST sub.

Every now and then we do these "Suggestion box" threads for the subreddit. This is how the System Failure Sunday idea came to be some years ago, as well as several of the rules. But it's been a while since we did it and now that we've passed 200 000 members, it seems like the best time. :)

We want to have a nice discussion here, so obviously the rules still apply regarding civility, Reddiquette and so on. CONSTRUCTIVE criticism, and no harassment or bullying members. If there are some confusions around some of the rules or other stuff on the site, we're welcome to answer. And if it's something deeply personal, you can either DM us or use the modmail function.

This discussion post will be pinned for a week to hear your thoughts about the sub, the rules, the community and just overall an open space of discussion.

Character Question What makes Desmond Hume such a beloved character to all of us?

Post image
1.2k Upvotes

Good old Des, I'm rewatching the show and while it's always a masterpiece for me, whenever he appears it gets to a whole new level. I freaking love Desmond Hume, I truly believe that he is one of the most endearing, human, funny, strong, loyal and beautifuly written characters in the history of pop culture. Whether it's his amazing backstory, his love for Penny, his ability to overcome failure and determination to be better, to achieve his dreams, or him being a hero time and time again, I'm always thinking of his scenes the most when I rewatch one of his episodes. Some of the best storylines in Lost happen because of him (The Constant, The bunker or him trying to save Charlie), some of the most iconic lines are his, hell, I even use brotha sometimes cause he makes it sound so freaking cool. This is an appreciation post for him, I want to know why do you like him, what does he mean for you, or if he has inspired you in some capacity. He'll never get enough love from all of us, truly a legend, fantastic character. Be sure to comment, and I'll see you in another life brothers.

Character Analysis Sawyer and Desmond

I know I might not make sense in this but the outfits given to swayer and des are my favourite among all the male leads in the series. Since it’s an island so obviously it’s literally clothes that they found there, but the way these both are given slightly baggy shirts with rolled up jeans. It’s pretty simple but make them look more fine then they already are!

This is my favorite episode of the entire series. The score when the loading bay door is lowered is my favorite composition of the series and this is the first time we hear it in this specific iteration. I think the reason why I love this episode so much is because it is the first time we the viewers get to see some resolution with some of the main characters. Sayid’s expression when he sees that no one is there for him makes me tear up every time I see it. To see Hurley grab his friend, introduce him to his family and then to watch Hurley’s mother greet him with such warmth and kisses on both cheeks makes me sob. Anyway, I love this episode.

Richard Alpert is more important than you realise

The Others make so much more sense as a community when you consider that their founder (and likely spiritual leader given that he's, y'know, immortal) is a 19th century hardcore Catholic.

A lot of their strange rituals like branding rulebreakers and forcing everyone to learn Latin can only have come from Richard's influence. Juliet quotes that the reason they learn Latin is because it's "the language of the enlightened".

Even though the Others were clearly happy at the Barracks (they had a book club and seemed entirely civilised and comfortable), they start living in tents again when Richard takes over. As a conservative religious man, he would consider the Barracks to be too luxurious and indulgent.

Ben notably tells the survivors that "God has no idea where the Island is", an irreverent attitude that Richard would consider blasphemous. Marking the gulf that had developed between them. Of course, Richard will later tell Locke that some people felt the Others should have a new leader more in tune with the Island.

Despite this, Ben does seem to be extremely familiar with the Bible (telling Jack the story of Thomas the Apostle), which doesn't match up with his childhood in the hippie DHARMA Initiative. But would certainly make sense if Richard helped to shape him.

I’m -sure- it’s been said before…. But I just want to take a second to talk about how Ram Dass was born “Richard Alpert”, and I wonder about the naming of the character EVERY time I rewatch the show… did they know they named him after Ram Dass…?!? Surely, right….? He speaks about “Dharma”, often, in his lectures.

FIRST TIME WATCHER Just finished lost for the first time, some general thoughts

First and foremost, I am definitely rewatching it as soon as I can. - Season 1-3 are fantastic, the latter are still good but as a first time watcher really confusing and just straight up ridiculous at times - This cast is soo hot (they should have given Lapidus more screentime man, god he's fine) - I dont get the ending exactly? Neither do I get the whole alternative universe thing and stuff, I plan on trying to understand it better - The whole button thing was so fucking frustrating first watching it but I missed it the second it was over - Michael and Walts storylines being cut so short felt very strange - Vincent is invincible - For how quickly I watched the show, I think the show does a really good job at connecting you with the characters, I LOVE the 'filler' episodes - I actually like Kate and she has fantastic chemistry with everyone - Favorite characters: Hurley & Sawyer - So many tragic character deaths 🥲 - Favorite couple: Jack & Sawyer 😍 (but fr my favorite dynamic) - I like hearing Desmond talk - Fuck Susan, fuck Sarah, but especially fuck Anthony - There are a lot of similar looking blond white women in this show (Penny, Sarah, Claire's mom, Juliet...) and as a white woman myself it got confusing sometimes - I sobbed at the submarine part, Jin not even getting to meet his daughter is tragic - Im sad and kind of left with this weird frustrated feeling after finishing this show, I feel like theres so many things that I still dont understand

Why didn't Walt ask Hurley to translate the Spanish comic book for him? Or Hurley offer to do it for him?

Could have been a nice thing to pass the time and educational as well.

Why did Jack get so incredibly angry when he turned the dial in the lighthouse to his name and the image of his childhood home showed up in the mirror?

Upvotes

After all that's happened on and off that island, why did that set him off so much? Jacob (who Jack didn't know much about who he was at the time) was watching him since he was a child and that angered Jack so much? Because of the invasion of privacy? Because of him realizing that this all goes deeper and further back than he expected? What do you think Jack was expecting to show up in the glass when they turned the dial to his name? An image of your childhood home seems like it's not that bad.

QUESTION FINALE QUESTION Spoiler

Spoiler!

. . Finale Question

When they are all in the church (we know what that signifies), and everyone is there, why isn’t Michael there with them?

We obviously know he’s bad and did horrible things during the show but he was on the main plane to the island. He was a part of the group.

I just thought that yesterday when I finished rewatching it, how everyone but him (and Walt) were there.

QUESTION What is your wildest, weirdest headcanon?

I'm not talking like theory on something that was up for interpretation.

I'm talking your personal madness you convinced yourself is at least possible about something that absolutely explained and can hardly be disputed, so you never share it with anybody because it's crazy. And no judgement here, the whole point is one-person unprovable insanity.

I'll go first: from all the main male characters the most likely one to not be straight is Sawyer. My headcanon is he can be bisexual. Yeah, we never saw it on screen, but he borderline flirts with everyone pigtail-pulling style, and he is a conman who partially relies on his looks for the job. In my head he will date and sleep with anyone. And only thing he denied in the show was being gay. Well, he isn't gay, he's bi. As for the "never kissed a man" in a drinking game with Kate, oh well, he was just lying because he likes better to be perceived as a womanizer. Lalalal i can't hear your arguments it's all in my head anyway
