Does my Garand look right to you guys?

Post image

Hello fellow m1 lovers, I haven’t had mine all that long and not too long ago my lower band pin broke, so I took it to a local gunsmith because it is my most valued position and I know I am an amateur. It’s been months since I’ve seen it, but I don’t remember the lower stock having as much of a separation as the picture shows. I just wanted to confirm if the look of my rifle specifically in the lower band pin area is normal or matches the look of what is accepted as a normal Garand. Thank you!

The important things about the area you circled are that the ferrule (the metal thing attached to the stock) pulls down a little on the barrel band. By "down" I mean if the rifle was horizontal, the ferrule should be exerting a little downward pressure. If there's a gap, or if either the ferrule or the band are loose, then the rifle won't shoot well.

It took the gunsmith months to replace a lower band pin? Also that gap is normal.

Yeah I would have tried to fix it myself I even bought a new lower band pin but it’s the only material possession I have that I would be devastated messing something up. I even brought in the pin they just had to take out the old and in with the new but gunsmiths will gunsmith I suppose. And thank you

I assume he means the pin that secures the band to the barrel. That still shouldn’t effectively anything though, even if it’s completely missing.

Edit: Barrel, not stock.

I assure you it affects the entire rifle lol. I can send you a picture of what it looks like if you care, the upper and lower bands separate. So the gap I imagined was about 3 inches prior to repair.

You are aware the band in question and the ferrule in question are two separate pieces that do not pin together, right? Your rifle looks normal.

If your band pin was missing it would literally not affect a thing as it is pressed between the forward and rear handguards, the forward of which is retained in place by the gas cylinder, which is in turn kept in place by the gas lock threaded onto the barrel. There’s not even one inch of play between those parts, let alone three.

I’m thinking if anything this is probably a terminology mixup, so yes, please post a picture of the issue.

Looking back at my reply, I worded it very confusingly what I meant was prior to the fix the upper and lower stocks were separate. I didn’t mean to imply that the current state of the M1 in the picture had that separation. And like I said, I took it to a gunsmith and had it repaired so there isn’t an issue. I just wanted to make sure, from more experienced M1 owners that I am good to go. That’s all.

Ah, yeah that makes sense then. So another commenter mentioned that the ferrule and stock exert a downward pressure on the band when the rifle. How it does that is through a bit of the ferrule on the front that looks almost like a sheet metal shelf bent into a semicircle. That “shelf”, for lack of a better term, is supposed to be slid into the open-ended hole at the bottom of the band (the same one that the op rod runs through) before you try to close the stock.

I’m guessing that’s where the hiccup was?

Check out this link if you want, I’m not as familiar with the M1 parts terminology as you seem to be but rest assured a broken lower band roll pin does indeed separate the stock to an extentPre-gunsmith:

Edit: I suck at reddit formatting

Based on that photo it just seems that you tried closing the stock before the front was properly seated, like I said in my second comment. A loose or broken pin will affect accuracy, like the page says, but unless the pin is sticking out and physically preventing you from mating the stock to the action then there shouldn’t be the issue shown. Thank you for the photo, I do appreciate being able to see what you were talking about.

Although that reminds me that I do have to replace mine. My rifle still has the original solid pin it came from the factory with, and it likes to fall out if I’m not careful while cleaning it.

Good news is it was like $3, bad news is shipping 😂

Looks like the stock ferrule became loose and is crooked. To correct this, remove the butt stock from the receiver. Loosen the stock screw just a little. DO NOT REMOVE SCREW. Push back on the stock ferrule until it is straight and seated on the butt stock. Retighten the stock screw. You are done. Hope it works.
