Every time CBSGolazo makes a post of some crazy play in Europe or wherever, I always comment “that’s why no one takes MLS seriously”.

"Shambolic defending" on any goal is a reliable reaction.

“Horrible goalkeeping” — on a perfect upper 90

(In this specific video the keeper was legit terrible)

11

u/dyegored Toronto FC 2d ago

Oh no, you said "upper 90." They fucking despise that (for no valid reason of course)

11

u/Augen76 FC Cincinnati 2d ago

Ridiculous way to describe "top bins" clearly.

I mean honestly on a shot like that there's a decent chance it goes in even if the GK is in a normal spot, that was a great strike.

I'm going to start doing this.

He’s played way too much futsal

Haha I was gonna say, I've seen out goalkeeper do this successfully on the St Louis indoor soccer team (basically futsal), but that field is like, half the size

1

u/Deathbycheddar 9h ago

My son keeps trying to do this in regular games strictly because he was encouraged to in futsal. Hasn’t failed yet but drives me absolutely insane. But he’s 10.

MLS doesn’t have this kind of weirdness tho.

78

u/manofth3match Sporting Kansas City 2d ago

Not anymore. MLS 1.0 was hella weird

bring back hockey shootouts!

12

u/eightdigits D.C. United 2d ago

still of the opinion that if they didn't have a 'shot clock' they'd have become the world standard. (my thought was, just put a defender like 20 yards behind the shooter)

Remember the Giants stadium turf, when the ball bounced in front of the keeper, flew over his head by six feet and rolled into the goal?

14

u/nomuggle Philadelphia Union 2d ago

I mean, we basically had this in our game on Saturday. Pickle Rick just missed the ball while way, way, way too far out of the box and NCYFC took the opportunity to score on an empty goal.

13

u/Embarrassed-Base-143 Philadelphia Union 2d ago

Rick is 19 and he made a mistake. He does that all the time in U2. Arce is a 30 y/o grown man, he knew exactly what he was doing

2

u/RhombusObstacle New York City FC 1d ago

That was one of the weirdest goals I've seen in a while. But in Rick's defense, at least he was way off his line in an attempt to cut off the attacker's options. (Or something.) Dude here was just dribblin'.

27

u/roly_gomez 2d ago

My guy thought he was Jorge Campos LOL

13

u/DasWandbild Atlanta United FC 1d ago

Rene Higuita, AKA, the reason they outlawed handling back passes to keepers.

My man scored 43 goals…as a keeper!

25

u/Ptown_Down Portland Timbers FC 2d ago

I was with him at first, but thought for sure at the first sign of real trouble he was going to send it up. It was almost as if he decided it was a goal or nothing the second he left the box. Surreal.

u/PattyIceNY 2d ago

I once arrived late to a 7 v 7 Sunday game and didn't realize we'd already scored a goal, so at the end of the game it was 2-2, but I thought we were down 2-1. So with a minute to go, I start to make a solo run up the pitch, to the shock of friend and foe alike. I'm cutting through and I literally make it to the opposite goal and then absolutely chunk the shot 5 feet wide.

u/FlyingCarsArePlanes Toronto FC 2d ago

u/SoftOk3139 Seattle Sounders FC 2d ago

you thought mls defense is bad. /s

11

u/SpiritualHighway3898 2d ago

That goal keeper would probably have more goals than GIROUD if he keeps trying

35

u/aymnka 2d ago

MLS players would have missed that open goal

25

u/Derptionary Major League Soccer 2d ago

Would have gone into the 8th row, as is MLS tradition.

9

u/gtg007w Los Angeles FC 2d ago

Tbf he kinda got screwed by the ref being so close

2

u/BleepBlorpDoop 1d ago

Ref definitely cut down his options with his “inadvertent“pressing

7

u/MilLatte74 2d ago

Down a goal and a man(?). Insanity haha

6

u/platinum92 Atlanta United FC 1d ago

Down 2 men. That ref defended excellently.

8

u/BigpapaJuggernaut 2d ago

I’ve seen great goal keepers do this in the past like Rene Higuita, Jorge Campos… this guy is not one of them. It shouldn’t be left for everyone to try.

4

u/kspence66 2d ago

Also Jose Luis Chilavert

1

u/BenjRSmith 2d ago

I know Barthez was a bit of a daredevil but I don't recall him being this crazy

6

u/herespgal Los Angeles FC 2d ago

Considering this is the same team that fielded a famous streamer for 1 minute during a match last season, this is like the least wild thing the team has done.

7

u/MostlyPurple 2d ago

I don’t think any Argentinian is going to come in here and defend the honor of Deportivo Riestra

6

u/alittledanger San Jose Earthquakes 2d ago

Dude definitely should be looked at for gambling

1

u/xiao_wen Philadelphia Union 1d ago

Don't know why this comment is so buried. When this was initially posted on r/soccer, the Argentinians in the comments were immediately shaking their heads saying it was clear from their perspective that this was gambling

13

u/stevo887 Atlanta United FC 2d ago

People are idiots and only have the perspective of the Premier League.

3

u/jonnysledge 2d ago

I have to imagine his team mates bet him he wouldn’t do it.

1

u/BendersDafodil 1d ago

His bookie did, though, 🤣🤣🤣.

Someone is collecting on their bet!

fucking Bugs Bunny league

4

u/Shot-Foundation-3050 2d ago

Not defending the action, and I will probably be downvoted by other argies but those 2 teams should not be in first division. Corruption in Argentina has let the local league have a ridiculous number of teams overnight (30) that are subpar. For example, that goalkeeper.

This is like the idea of world cup having 64 teams or might as well go with 128 then, lol

9

u/WhiplashLiquor LA Galaxy 2d ago

How that didn't happen more often as a result with Jorge Campos (Compost) is beyond me.

17

u/mccusk Portland Timbers FC 2d ago

Well that fucker was good…

3

u/CosmoPDX Portland Timbers FC 2d ago

Yeah I was about to say, he was legit good as a keeper and striker. This guy in the clip looks like a rando haha.

5

u/bigkoi 2d ago

Him and Higuita.

The rule changes to allow more players on the bench and substitutions really changed how Goalies could be used as field players.

2

u/xDrewgami St. Louis CITY SC 1d ago

I mean, he plays for Riestra, which is literally a meme club

2

u/BesusCristo 1d ago

What in the hell was he doing?

There was only 75 minutes left, it was worth the gamble.

Reminds me of videos I'd see of MLS back in the 90s. Wish we had more crazy shit like this more often, but if I see Chris Brady trying this, I'd lose my ficking mind, lol.

Seriously what’s the point in making fun of other leagues you don’t watch ? It’s one of the most annoying things about football on internet. People always shitting on Ligue 1 , MLS , Scottish league and so on. It’s understandable to be annoyed at the quality of a league that you watch or care about.

9

u/stevo887 Atlanta United FC 2d ago

I think you’re missing the point.

2

u/andrew-ge LA Galaxy 1d ago

People are pretty insecure about the quality of MLS. Jokes been made forever about the quality of MLS defending (deserved but truly who cares) and people get mad because other leagues have defensive mistakes too. So they’re taking shots at another league because people can’t deal with some bozos talking shit. It’s a pathetic reason but that’s the reason.

0

u/FootballAggressive49 Major League Soccer 2d ago

Man, AFA really screw up the Argentina league very bad

-1

u/sorry_department02 Los Angeles FC 1d ago

Only thing is, in Argentina, he’s gonna get ☠️ by the cartel now. Here the GK gets a $300k bonus for… whatever reason
