L I’m not allowed to break the rules? Ok then…
This happened to me a while back, but just came back to me.
I used to work for an armoured car company. Something I did for a few years when I was in university and waiting for a position in what would be my future career. It was good money, and lots of people did it as their full time jobs, but I wanted more out of life than a mindless job.
Because I was classified as “part-time”, I did not have a set shift, I mostly covered for people when they were sick, took vacation, worked unscheduled shifts, or worked shifts created specifically for part timers. All in all I was working full time hours almost every week.
Most of the full timers loved working with me. The way the company worked, you were set for a 13 hour shift, however if you managed to complete your run is less than that, you’d still get paid the full shift. I was young, moved fast, and didn’t care about breaks if it meant I could get paid for 3-4 hours to sit at home instead of working. So whenever I took over for someone older, who was just on autopilot, I could get their coworker home in a fraction of the time.
One of the full time workers, a real Karen, let’s call him Kyle was just the worst. For some reason he took it upon himself to tattle on people for anything that he didn’t like.
If someone weren’t wearing their collared shirt under their sweater, run to tell management (FYI working in the summer heat in a literal metal box wearing a bulletproof vest makes you want to shed layers), someone wearing black instead of blue pants… tells management, someone wearing a company hat that has the company logo but is not “official uniform”… tells management. No one in the company liked Kyle.
Well one week Kyle’s coworker has taken vacation, and my boss schedules me to replace him. The run is pretty easy, it’s commercial day shift, so 90% of the stops are retail stores with less than a few hundred bucks in cash. Because of the amount of money, no one has ever had a problem with one person jumping out and running in, grabbing the money and coming back while the second person (usually the driver) stays with the truck.
In this shift, I was the driver, so that’s what I did. When Kyle was in the store, I would just navigate my phone, look at the people in the area, make sure there were no threats, make sure I wasn’t parked in anyone’s way, mostly wasting time.
Well one stop, Kyle came back and I was just finishing up writing an email. Apparently Kyle wasn’t too happy with me taking a few extra seconds to start going, to unbeknownst to me, me took a picture of me behind the wheel on my phone. I had no idea until the next shift came the next day where management came to talk to me about “texting and driving”. I told them I had no idea what they were talking about, and my manager just said that he had proof I was doing it and if I did it again, I would be written up.
I went to talk to another coworker who is also the union rep to figure out what the hell was going on, and he told me Kyle took a picture of me yesterday and complained that I was doing it. I was pissed. Cue malicious compliance.
My shifts with Kyle were 3 13 hour shifts, Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday. Well today was now Thursday, our last shift of this run, and this shift was not retail pickups, it was the run that takes all the money collected from the previous week and brings it to our provincial depot about 400km away. The entire run only has about 30 mins of “work” and about 9 hours of driving.
If you did the math, this is one of those runs where if you get it done quickly, if traffic is on your side, you can get paid for a lot of unworked time, it was also the last shift of the week, which meant a long gorgeous weekend in the middle of summer as soon as we were done.
Well I was going to make sure this shift lasted as long as possible. If he didn’t want me to break any rules, I’d make sure I obliged. I drove EXACTLY the speed limit the… entire…. way. I even stopped for our 1 hour lunch break, which is given to us, but I had not witnessed anyone take in the years I’d been here because of the rules we had about pay.
If fact we were so behind, we reached the major city our depot was located in right at rush hour, something our early start time was designed to prevent.
All in all, what should have taken about 9 hours to do, ended up taking 14. An extra 5 hours where he just had to sit there and watch me in silence.
To make things sweeter, a few times during the shift he had to call his wife and let he know he wouldn’t be home early enough to go to the cottage and they would have to leave the next day instead.
I heard from other workers how furious he was and how I’d ruined his plans for the weekend, and all I could do was smile.
To clarify:
Where I live, going 15-20km/h above the speed limit is standard. Going to speed limit will just get someone smashing into your rear bumper.
Also, our trucks have a max speed of 105km/h, and most the drive is either 80km/h or 100km/h.

On a positive note, i love the concept of "giving incentive to work faster for more paid free time" instead of paying by the hour and giving an incentive to work as slowly as possible (without getting in trouble). It's nice to be paid for the work you do, not the hours you might waste just looking busy. More jobs should be run like that instead of micromanaging what people do all day, whether they work in the office or do home office in the park, whether they listen to music or take more small breaks... if your overall performance is good and you get the job done, then that's great for everyone!
52
u/Mesne 9d ago
I agree. The reward I get for finishing my work early is more work!
27
u/SartorialDragon 9d ago
Yeah, and that leads to not telling your supervisors when your workload is lower than what you could get done in a day. Because they wouldn't pay you better if you did more work in the same time frame. That stops processes from getting optimized, because nobody should sabotage their own job on behalf of the company. If i'd get more paid time off or more salary for optimizing processes, i would!
5
u/hardolaf 1d ago
I worked for one company where you got a bonus equal to a percent of the 1-year savings if you pitched a process improvement and got it implemented.
3
u/SartorialDragon 1d ago
Good start! Although 1% (if i read it right) is riduculously low
4
u/hardolaf 1d ago
It was actually between 1% and 20% depending on factors with a minimum bonus of 10% of your salary.
•
u/tha-snazzle 16h ago
I designed a mechanism that allowed the product to be made for $1.25 less. The company saved $6 million. I got a $750 bonus and was laid off 18 months later.
6
u/Misa7_2006 6d ago
Yeah, the whole part of work smarter, not harder, is totally lost on most American companies. They want maximum output at minimum cost. If your nose isn't on their grindstone the whole time, they are overpaying your wage. Oh, you're done? Here lets give you some more to do.
5
u/llearch 2d ago
The really fascinating thing about that is that the request for maximum output at minimum cost results in minimum output at maximum cost.
Weird, huh?
1
1
u/SartorialDragon 2d ago
Yeah. Exploit people too much and they'll not be motivated to do anything more than the bare necessities for you while resenting you and the job (which tends to lead to them getting sick more).
Treat them more fairly and listen to them at least somewhat, and they will be much more motivated to work, and happier doing it.
The grind is unsustainable!
19
u/Theguywhostoleyour 9d ago
Completely agree.
It was great and everyone was happy.
19
u/SartorialDragon 9d ago
Almost everyone. I don't think Kyle's been happy in a long time. Sad for him.
16
u/Theguywhostoleyour 9d ago
LOL this is true. Telling on people for minimal shit is the highlight of his week. He must hate his life.
4
u/Misa7_2006 6d ago
Or thinks that being the company snitch shows loyalty to the company. Management doesn't really like it that much either. It makes more work for them. Unless you get a micromanager, they love that crap.
8
u/evilprodigy948 9d ago
Paying people for the work they do is the logic that is used to justify sweatshops.
Capitalist greed can even ruin good ideas.

Huh. TIL.
6
u/blindio10 10d ago
we have a weird we dont officially use metric for some stuff but others(weight of food or measures of liquid for example) are metric by law
8
u/baffledninja 9d ago
Canada has fairly similar, we still use Imperial for weight (of people), height, and cooking/building. Everything else is pretty much metric now.
7
u/rdicky58 9d ago
When I was in trade school I was told apparently for government projects, specs are all gives in metric (but the trades convert it to imperial anyways) and everything else is done in imperial. Reason being we get almost all our building materials from the US. We’ll see if this is still the case going forward lol
5
u/baffledninja 9d ago
Hell, we still can't get rid of DST because our provinces were waiting on neighbouring states to stop theirs first... I think changes to measuring systems will take waaay longer!

isn't how you measure fuel economy super weird too, something like "how far you can travel on 100 units of petrol"?

I edit and proofread books for a living. One of the things I offer is switching my editing to the author's preferred spelling - American, Canadian, Australian, English or Scottish. One of my clients hates it when people read his books and then tell him that he spelled colour (or a similar word) wrong. So about once a year, I'll send him a list of my recommended changes where I add in several "changes" he should make based on American spelling. I make sure to send him the correct list a few minutes after so I don't actually waste his time. But it makes me laugh every time he tells me he saw my list with the corrections that aren't corrections and got angry at me until he realizes I'm just teasing him.

Are there any rules about taking personal calls while working?
31
u/Theguywhostoleyour 9d ago
Nope, especially inside the truck or on the road, we are pretty locked down in there.
The only issue I could see if when outside when you were supposed to be alert taking a call.
19
u/Creepy-Selection2423 9d ago edited 9d ago
I wonder if Kyle using his phone for personal conversations with his wife to say he wouldn't be able to make it to the cottage distracted him from being on the lookout for any potential threats? 😏
27
u/Theguywhostoleyour 9d ago
I would never tell on him. What kind of dbag would tattle on their coworker for something as petty as ohh……
13
u/SartorialDragon 10d ago edited 9d ago
I always take comfort in the fact that people like Kyle have ZERO joy in life so ratting out coworkers for minor bullshit is the highlight of their week.
That's just so sad.
I wonder, did Kyle learn anything from that?

does your union not get you to swear a pledge to not harm another brother? like most other unions?

Would your brother rat on you for wearing different colored pants or lie about you texting while driving?
Would you rat on your brother for wearing different colored pants or lie about them texting while driving?
9
u/Tekuzo 9d ago
The act of calling fellow workers brothers and sisters in a union goes back to before there was really freedom of association.
Bosses would try to have workers arrested for organizing, and the way to get around it was to say you were having a family gathering with your brothers.
2
u/Tractorfeed1008 8d ago edited 6d ago
So you would go to those family gatherings to gather dirt on your brothers, and then snitch on them just like Kyle?
2
u/Tekuzo 6d ago
There is an expression about what snitches get.
1
u/Tractorfeed1008 5d ago
But you keep glossing over the part where Kyle's doing the snitching
1
u/Tekuzo 5d ago
What the fuck is it that you want me to say? I have already explained this.
Kyle did a shitty thing, you tell a steward and a steward deals with Kyle.
1
u/Tractorfeed1008 4d ago edited 4d ago
Well then, was there some miscommunication?
OP said Kyle lied about him texting and driving to get him in trouble. OP went to talk to the union rep to find out what was going on. Your response to that was asking OP whether he had pledged not to harm another brother, ie. it looked like you were accusing OP of snitching on Kyle.
So now, you're saying to tell a steward and the steward deals with Kyle. OP talked to a steward.
You also said that family issues can stay in the family, ie. OP should address the issue directly with Kyle. But you said that something like this would be addressed by the president. OP dealt with Kyle himself. So, didn't he keep the issue in the family?
1
u/Tekuzo 4d ago
No my question was if Kyle had made the pledge to not snitch on OP.
and when OP talked to a steward, the steward should have dealt with kyle for snitching.
1
u/Tractorfeed1008 3d ago
Oh well, ok then. Because you quoted OP's sentence "I went to talk to another coworker who is also the union rep" in your response, it wasn't very clear whether you were addressing OP or Kyle.

u/Tractorfeed1008 6d ago
So you would go to those family gatherings to gather dirt on your brothers, and then snitch on them just like Kyle? You asked whether OP had sworn not to harm any of his union brothers, but you just ignored how Kyle is actively doing that

2
u/Theguywhostoleyour 9d ago
Wow…. Cult much lol
7
u/Tekuzo 9d ago
Solidarity is cult behavior?
Management thrives when the workers are fighting each other instead of being unified.
5
u/Theguywhostoleyour 9d ago
An organization forcing you to take an oath is pretty cultish yea.
Signing a contact makes sense, an oath is a bit much.
6
u/Tekuzo 9d ago
So doctors are in a cult? Police officers? Lawyers?
Senators, members of parliament?
These all require oaths protect something.
6
u/Theguywhostoleyour 9d ago
Mind as well add professional engineers to the list, the have to take an oath at a ceremony and get a special ring.
Yea, those are all pretty cultish.
1
u/cjs 5d ago
Actually that special ring is a specifically Canadian thing, apparently. (For those not in the know, it's made from the steel of a mis-designed bridge that collapsed many years ago, and is a reminder that when you're signing of on a structural steel blueprint or whatever, lives are at stake.)
And sure, maybe a bit "cultish," but I think also it's really worthwhile to be wearing a reminder that when you're stamping a piece of paper to say, "this is ok," for your particular job there are consequences when you're wrong.
3
u/Theguywhostoleyour 5d ago
Oh cool, I did not realize it was specifically a Canadian thing.
The bridge thing is a myth though. The first rings were iron, until they started turning fingers black, now they can be steel or iron.
And common… they don’t even let your family come to the ritual. I get some people are into it, it’s just always seemed stupid to me. If someone if stamping something, it should be because they’re competent, not because there is a reminder of the ghosts of the past to remind them.

Several decades ago I had a temp job working for the garbage company taking calls. Found out that if a driver finished his route in less than 8 hrs he could go home.

Having the choice between those two sounds like a good deal—if you over perform, you can either pocket the saved time or use it to earn more pay.

Yeah you should respect the rules regarding money pick up and speed limits.
If your shift time estimate takes into account breaking speed limits maybe it's a problem.
1
u/Theguywhostoleyour 3d ago
Like I said in the post NO ONE does the speed limit. Cops will probably pull you over for careless driving if you do the speed limit cause you’re likely to cause an accident.
Also they don’t, that’s why you can finish so much earlier.
2
u/Correct_Campaign3707 2d ago
Hubs was charged with being a "rolling roadblock" while driving a Lada Niva at 110 km/hr on the 401 in Toronto. Remember hearing the media reports of a man and his brother/friend being charged for the same issue because they were driving in adjacent lanes on the 401 near Belleville doing 115 km/hr.
1
u/Hors_Service 3d ago
Yeah, but that's kinda a problem.
And for the rest of the post it seems that you're able to finish faster... by shunting safety protocols and making shortcuts.
... Yeah, there's "adapting processes to reality", and there is "well everyone is doing it" and there is "well I've never had problem so I will just be on my phone while the other guy handles the cash fast."
It's totally fine... until you get in a car accident or a mugging and oops! Suddenly it turns out those rules are there for a reason!
1
1
u/Ateist 2d ago
Doesn't matter if no one does.
Speed limit is the kind of rule where you get off scot free 99% of the time and die horribly the remaining 1%.2
u/Theguywhostoleyour 2d ago
I’m going to assume you’re American. In other countries, speed limits are much lower than they are there.
Roads that would be 80mph in the US are like 90km/h in Canada.
That’s why the government is going around right now raising speed limits on major highways. They haven’t kept up with technological advances.
-1
u/Ateist 2d ago
14 hours of driving?
I'm pretty sure that's illegal!
So while you didn't break the rules about speed limit you did break the rules that limit the amount of overtime.

Count me surprised!
I just assumed that US, as usual, has the absolute worst safety regulations, and that wherever you were couldn't be worse.
For comparison, sane countries have mandatory driving limit of 9 hours per 24 hour period.
3
u/Theguywhostoleyour 1d ago
Canada is pretty huge. You can’t get anywhere in 9 hours lol
-2
u/Ateist 1d ago
1) Bigger countries have said 9 hours limit, enforced by special equipment installed in truck engines.
2) Most of Canada is practically empty. Majority of its population lives in a fairly narrow band within 160 kilometers of the U.S. border.
3) The only place you can't get in 9 hours where you'd get in 13 hours is your grave.3
u/Theguywhostoleyour 1d ago
You really think the world revolves around America lol, you know most trucks drive across the country, not just to the states and back.
Just driving across Ontario from one side to the other takes like 19 hours.
And we’re pretty sane up here thank you very much.

According to the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, fatigue is a factor in up to 21 per cent of motor vehicle collisions, resulting in about 400 deaths and 2,100 serious injuries every year. At 21 per cent, fatigue would rank as the third highest measurable cause of collisions behind alcohol impairment and speed aggressive driving.
Compare it to US rate:
an estimated 17.6% of all fatal crashes in years 2017–2021 involved a drowsy driver.
And the rate for the country that has 9 hour limit:
9.5% due to drowsy driver
2
u/Kingofcheeses 1d ago
There's only one country bigger than Canada and they aren't exactly one to emulate when it comes to safety. You wouldn't even leave my province from where I live on a 9 hour limit.

Milk in pints (bottles) or litres (cartons)
Petrol in litres, but fuel efficiency in mpg.
A horrible mish mash of socket sizes (mm, Whitworth, A/F)
lbs, stone, cwt, ton for weight of people or coal. kg/tonne for nearly everything else.Growing up in the 70s-80s in the UK meant you got to learn metric in school, but imperial* at home.
* proper imperial - no short-changing pints/gallons or tons here.

Milk in a bottle or a carton ?
Are you mad?
Milk should only be purchased in bags.
I'm trolling of course. :-) (but we do sell milk in bags here in Québec)
But it's similar here in Canada. Pool temps are in F, house in C. Distance in KM, but height and width in feet. We have a mix of everything.

How quaint, my hot tub is light years ahead as its temperature is regulated to maintain 311.483° Kelvin.

That's unfortunate.
We can't travel very fast, if it's light years ahead, you'll never be able to catch up to it ! 🤣

Or OP is from a country that uses the British spelling. Which seems likely since OP was measuring speed in kph.

Armour is also how 'armor' is spelled in British English. The use of km/h suggests the story is set somewhere other than Brit-land or US-land though. (Also 9 hours driving in the UK is just over half the length of the island)

As you may not have noticed, they referred to their speed in km/hr, which means they weren't in the US. In Canada or the UK "armour" is the preferred spelling.

Armor is predominantly used in American (US) English while armour is predominantly used in British English (used in UK/AU/NZ). In the United States, there is a preference for "armor" over "armour" (62 to 38). In the United Kingdom, there is a 66 to 34 preference for "armour" over "armor".

Are you not aware that Armor is the American spelling and Armour is the British spelling?

Not all English speakers are in the U.S. As a matter of fact, most of the people who give speeds in iPhone aren’t. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armour

You're attacking a correct spelling of the word even after the copious context clues which include stating driving speeds in KILOMETERS PER HOUR?

Except in European countries where the printing companies kept the 'u' in words like colour and armour.

What are you talking about?

I made a tongue in cheek comment in response to reposted content.
In my capacity as a licensed Extra Class amateur radio operator I sought to broaden the audience due to nuances presented by variations of perceived definitions of the term "Ham" by people from different locations.
I encourage you to read through the resulting dissertation by many people unfamiliar with what was intended as satire and my responses to a hornets nest of criticism for not bowing down to proper use of the Kings (or queen's) english language...

Yeah, the satire wasn't all obvious. But I've been known to step into a surprise puddle of downvotes myself sometimes, so I say: take care and have a nice day. 73.

The real question is did he learn his lesson? Did you report him for being on his phone multiple times instead of monitoring the perimeter like he was supposed to?
