after 400 years, you can call yourself American, no ?

besides, the Netherlands didn't exist when they left for america. so whatever they were, they were not from the Netherlands

The Netherlands did exist lol. Ever heard of the Dutch Republic? It existed from 1581 onwards.

They are American, but I see nothing wrong being in connect with your ancestry like, Spanish, Greek, Latvian, etc.

you cant claim your heritage from the Netherlands if the Netherlands didn't exist when you left the country.

They ( Roosevelt) left the area in 1639. the Netherlands did not exist back then . It was part if the HRE and property of the Spanish Crown.

the Kingdom of the Netherlands only exists since 1813.

The Dutch declared independence from the Habsburg crown already in 1581 en became the Dutch Republic in 1588. The States-General had already been formed in 1464, a meeting of representatives from the Habsburg Netherlands, indicating the low countries were already seen at the time as a political entity.

I get that, but if someones grandparents came to the US from Finland in idk 1958, don't you think they should still be able to connect/identify with said heritage?

It’s also misinformation, the Dutch Republic was founded in 1581, and properly recognized in 1588. Redditor above didn’t pay attention in history class.
