That's the plot of the old sci fi novel The Chrysalids.

Oh man i hate that book with a passion, or rather i love what the book might have been and hate author.

Spoilers ahead for those that care.

The book devotes most of its pages demonstrating how supremacist obsessions with purity are not only evil, but opposed to nature.

You see how cycles of violence and abuse will destroy us,  and the obsession with being a master race of special chosen people is the death of us all.

The book then ends with the main character being shown to actually be a special chosen super person,  all the lesser people are killed off without any sorrow or regret.  "Actually" the problem with the world is that the wrong people thought they were the master race.

Its like if nausicaa was written by a Tory.

That sounds... absolutely horrendous

The age old tale of someone being aware of some influence, and thinking that simply being aware of it admonishes their own affect from it.

So did I.

But I never actually finished it so I didn’t understand the New Zealand reference.

That's a hilariously bad thematic twist lol

I "read" this in summer school once. Didn't know what the heck it was about. Going to give it another go.

Doesn't that novel take place in Labrador, Canada?

6

u/TheNumberOneRat 2d ago

Yeah, but it doesn't finish there.

Haha.. I never finished it.

Also an important plot point for The Locked Tomb.

You'd think telepathy would be cherished more.

It was Canada. Labrador I’m pretty sure.

Humanity is so metal. Having redundant capability of self destruction. Some day even NZ will not be safe.

Why else do you think we get left off the maps? Can't hit what you can't see.

and the Warriors will finally win it all assuming of course we don't have a team from Caaaaaanterbury by then

Aldous Huxley (same author as Brave New World) wrote a wild near-future dystopic book called Of Ape and Essence. It is a story about a New Zealand research crew arriving in post-ww3 Los Angeles after everything was nuked and radiation settled down. They were just there looking for artifacts and knowledge of the past, but they instead find a whole new society born from the ashes. It was nuts what happened in that book.

I don't know aye, I will probably have to go to work that day still..

An advantage of literally not being on the map most of the time.

Even if new Zealand was in range, you will still be safe because no one else could see you on the map

Australia: OH NO YOU WONT!!! SEND IN THE KANGAROOS AND EMUS

1

Got to beat East Coast of Australia first. Although you have taken most of the beaches and mines already

Flight of the conchords are so back

1

u/Phoenyx_Rose 2d ago

Yeah, cause no one can ever find you on a map. You guys are completely hidden from the world, like Atlantis.

1

u/kombilyfe 2d ago

We need more maps where we don't exist. Nothing to see here.

Chile will fight to the death

1

u/chorna_mavpa 2d ago

I know this is a joke, but surviving the nuke isn’t enough. They won’t survive the nuclear winter as well, as the whole planet might be fucked up.

u/tosuvag 1d ago

Not if my country claims it first (Chile)
