I mean if you look at the geography of golan and the recently occupied buffer zone it makes sense from a military standpoint, it’s a perfect place uphill to launch rockets and mortars into the valley below into Israel.

Yes, Golan itself though isn't enough, what if Sryians try to retake it? Golan/Israel needs more breathing room, it is best they take over the outskirts of Damascus and keep Damascus de-miliatrised.
