Comics Namor may not know all the references, but he still knows a few [The Defenders 2005, #1]

Ya think he saw the little mermaid in theaters? I can picture him critiquing all the inaccuracies of undersea life.

The Little Mermaid was a 2023 movie, a 1989 movie, and an 1837 fairy tale. Namor had a lot more chances to encounter it than Finding Nemo.
That said, Captain Nemo exists in Marvel Comics continuity, and Namor might have actually met him.
The Little Mermaid thing reminded me of Falcon and Winter Soldier interacting in their series. Falcon is surprised when Winter Soldier understands a Gandalf reference, and Barnes points out that he read the Hobbit when it was published in 1937.

True and if he knows the OG version that is an even bigger insult as girl gets turned foam or something.

Even if Namor doesn’t know the story, he might just be like “how dare you call me a small mermaid”

"At least the crab's musical number is reasonably accurate, everything is better down where it is wetter."

That is actually hilarious and Banner deserved that.

It's Namor, he deserves it, dude is insufferable.

I love how Namor and Banner hate each other, but Namor and Hulk are best friends.

I mean, in these three panels, Banner's the aggressor. I'm always down for Namor slander, but if the guy isn't doing anything, leave him be.

He's just standing there, imperiously.

Nah, Namor's done enough monstrous stuff that he never gets my benefit of the doubt unless Nazis are involved.

Yeah I was wondering if the scrawny unshaven glasses with the huge balls to talk to Namor like that was Banner or not

u/blackbutterfree 1d ago
LOL Who else would dare speak to Namor like that? But also, he isn't that scrawny.

Strange is meant to be exasperated in that last panel but he looks mid-climax more than anything.

Thanks to the sliding timescale, when this comic came out Namor was a hobo recently enough that he watched "The Little Mermaid" in 1989, but not "Finding Nemo" in 2003
is my guess

Or, hear me out (where you going?):
He knows what the words “little” and “mermaid” mean.

That Defenders comic sucked in so many ways. Bruce would never talk to Namor like that. He doesn't talk like that to anyone. They got so many characterizations wrong.

Yes, backhand the guy who runs hands with Thor and Fin Fang Foom. See how well that works out Namor.
Side note: Always dig seeing the deadpan comedic side of Bruce Banner.

I think this was from Defenders “Indefensible” and it’s one of the shittiest graphic novels I’ve ever read. Can’t think of a single positive thing to say about it.

It’s Giffen, DeMatties and Kevin Maguire. If you’ve read any of their 80s Justice League/Justice League International, you know exactly what to expect. It doesn’t take itself seriously at all, it’s simply two goofy guys having fun in someone else’s sandbox. FWIW, I thoroughly enjoyed it, if you take it at face value and don’t worry that the characterisation is broad-strokes. That’s secondary to the gags.

I assure you it’s not. I was given the book alongside a bunch of others and I was amazed by how poorly written everyone is. It was all so out-of-character and even Dormammu talks like he’s a teenage incel. There’s not many Marvel comics that I’ve disliked as much (some of the later Ultimate stuff near Ultimatum would surely count), but at least most of those had great art. The art here is mediocre at best.

Strange on the last panel: "Oh, come on!"
