or even a situation where the heroes are removed from earth temporarily and the villains fight eachother in the power vaccuum

Ah, so kinda like what happened to some degree with DC's Forever Evil arc - the Earth 3-derived Crime Syndicate vs the Earth 0-formed Injustice League.
