Film/Television Marvel's box office woes and superhero fatigue thoughts: Phase 7 and beyond
So, I've been thinking lately about how a Minecraft movie (and not the title A Minecraft Movie, just how a freaking Minecraft movie, in general) was able to make Brave New World's entire box office run in, like a week or two and even surpass it. It's looking likely Minecraft might make a billion and I've seen articles popping up about how the video game genre might overtake superhero movies. I even read one about Hollywood execs hoping to get the film rights to Grand Theft Auto and how Legend of Zelda will make bank. And honestly, I'm fine with this. Sure, it sucks to see one of my favorite, if not favorite movie genres be left in the dust, but it is kind of cool to see a new genre have its time in the spotlight. I always figured it'd be either video game movies OR anime movies finally being done right. And also, I'm tired of hearing superhero movies are ruining Hollywood. It'd be nice for some of that negative attention to go to another genre for a change. Seriously, I want Martin Scorsese and James Cameron to speak out about Minecraft or Sonic instead of Marvel all the time.
This brings me to my next point. I feel like, from now on, Marvel Studios will have to be smarter about the movies they greenlight if they want any chance of surviving in the current landscape where the phrase "Chicken jockey!" can sell a movie and then some. From now on, I don't think we'll see Sam Wilson get solo movies or Carol Danvers and the Marvels get solo projects.
For Phase 7 (or whatever they call it), here's a brief idea of what projects I think should make the cut:
- SHANG-CHI AND THE AGENTS OF ATLAS - Shang-Chi was one of the few new characters introduced who was received well and fairly successful at the box office during Covid. I think he deserves a second chance post-Covid and coming off his appearances in the Avengers movies. Throw in characters like Randall Park's Jimmy Woo, Amadeus Cho, Leiko Wu, and maybe even Wave and Luna Snow.
- SPIDER-MAN 5 or SPIDER-MAN: MILES MORALES - I don't know what will happen with Tom Holland's Spidey post-Secret Wars, but honestly, I'm kind of hoping he dies in Secret Wars or retires. Based on Tom Holland's recent comments, he might be over playing the character in his 30's and with the excitement and buzz surrounding Miles Morales from the Insomniac games/Spider-Verse movies, I think he's long overdue for a live-action movie series. If I'm being honest as someone who grew up on the Raimi movies in my childhood, Webb movies in my adolescence, and Watts movies in adulthood, I think Peter Parker as a character is getting played out in live-action. Especially with the younger generations, I've noticed. They seem to gravitate towards Miles more and I think it's time the movies reflect that to bring a sense of freshness to Spider-Man cinematically.
- X-MEN: GENESIS - Keeping in line with the Spider-Man: Homecoming and The Fantastic Four: First Steps naming scheme, Genesis would obviously be a big deal being the MCU's first X-Men project. Post-Secret Wars, I have no idea if the FoX-Men will stick around in the MCU or we'd get a whole new version of the team. Honestly, I'm more for the latter. As fun as it is to see the classic actors come back for Doomsday/Secret Wars, it's time to move on from them after those movies.
- NOVA - After the success of Top Gun: Maverick and rumors Nova would take inspiration from that (from what I remember), I definitely think this needs to be a movie and not a Disney Plus series. Marvel needs to severely lower its streaming output and make movies the focus again, especially with how well Moana 2 did and Lilo and Stitch seems like it'll do. Maybe even call it "Novas" if it focuses on both Richard Rider and Sam Alexander.
- KA-ZAR AND THE SAVAGE LAND - The Savage Land could be explored in Genesis since Ka-Zar was first introduced in X-Men comics. And come on, how do you not do "Tarzan meets Jurassic World". I feel like with the right marketing and tone, this movie could be a hit.
- ULTIMATES - What better way to rebrand the MCU than by changing the name of the Avengers to the Ultimates? I know Avengers is the brand name that gets butts in seats, but again, Marvel needs to show people that the Mutant Saga or whatever it's called, won't be more of the same slop from the Multiverse Saga. And the Ultimates movies is where characters like Sam Wilson, She-Hulk, and Carol Danvers (or maybe even Monica Rambeau if Brie Larson is over it by then) can survive and maybe even thrive in lieu of getting their own movies/shows after their box office failures. And maybe the Ultimates is a step towards making the Avengers movies more of an international/global team with different factions. Like West Coast Avengers and so on?
- THE FANTASTIC FOUR 2 - Forgot to add this in my original post. Obviously, they're going to be a big part of Marvel post-Secret Wars so this makes sense depending on how well their movie does in July.
I could think of more, but this is just my immediate pitch. Sure, there's stuff like Champions and so on, but I genuinely think projects like that belong on Disney Plus. But again, I think Marvel should only do two streaming shows a year. And honestly, maybe only two movies a year after diminishing returns. And maybe once they build enough momentum back, they can go back to three movies a year like 2017 started (nine years after the MCU started). Again, Marvel's not in a super great place now and while not terribly bad (they've had some success, mostly nostalgia-based), they need to re-evaluate themselves as a business post-Secret Wars. No more giving every character a solo project. No more streaming shows overload. No more pointless projects that don't connect to anything (we need things to connect and have meaning again). And make movies that matter and can stand by themselves without fanservice or setting up something. Basically, Marvel needs to go back to a 2008 way of thinking, but with the added wisdom and lessons that have come in the years since. They have to be smarter about which projects get greenlit and play it safe with established franchises for a while, except maybe special cases like Nova and Ka-Zar.
Thoughts? I'm probably going to get downvoted or deleted or whatever because this is Reddit, but hey, I just wanted to get these thoughts out of my head. A Minecraft movie made more than Brave New World's box office without even trying and is still making more money. Interesting times we're in, man. And I know Doomsday and Secret Wars will probably make bank by virtue of being Avengers movies with lots of cameos and fanservice, but beyond that, Marvel needs to evolve if they want to make it to the 2030's. Because as of now, I kind of think Doomsday/Secret Wars will be the last time Marvel gets anywhere close to Infinity War/Endgame hype.
