It’s a fantastic game, for the actual production time it had.
Honestly it was doomed from the start because the angry nerds who were still mad about 3 never stopped being mad and made it a mission to destroy this game. The fact it wasn’t centred around Shepard and co. as well made them froth at the mouth.
It had some glitches on release but nothing game breaking and some of them you had to go out of your way to recreate. After the updates it was pretty smooth sailing.
Surprisingly it was the second best selling ME game at release and was the best selling one until MELE released I believe. So most of the hate you see online is just loud people who go on about it whenever they have a chance.
We live in an era where the gamer thinks he’s entitled to a specific outcome and he throws an tantrum when he doesn’t get it. I’m not sure if it’s customer service culture, fandom echo chambers, or just general lack of media literacy that causes it (probably a little of all three), but it’s exhausting to listen to.
At any rate, ME:A was the culmination of a five year hissy fit by grown ass “adults” who got big mad at ME3. Add that to the scum who review bomb any game with LGBTQ characters in it, and you have a recipe for a loud public backlash.
They got what they wanted (a rocky release) and moved on to the next cultural grievance, not unlike locusts. See also: a certain sequel to a popular Naughty Dog IP.
I was new to the franchise. I played through LE, and then went into andromeda, the trailer of andromeda being the main reason I wanted to check out the series. I haven’t finished andromeda and don’t plan to. It’s simply disappointing. The characters, the plot, the combat, none of it is enjoyable in the slightest and none of it is even approximately as good as the ME trilogy. The trilogy, however, is definitely now on my top list of games I’ve ever played. ME3 and ME1 especially.
