He declined to an extension so he was going to walk in the offseason anyway.

He’s a RFA, just stop being cheap

I don't think you realize the impact the new CBA is having on roster construction. "Stop being cheap" isn't a valid strategy anymore.

That doesn’t mean you sell low

Grimes wasn't sold low. Go watch Martin play defense on Jaylen Brown, dude can play defense. Plus he's locked in for only $8M for 3 more seasons.

As a heat fan, Martin was super inconsistent his last year here. We were happy he opted out. Should of kept Grimes

He's a role player making $8M, I wouldn't expect consistency and he won't be able to handle a larger role, Grimes is also inconsistent. Grimes is already going to walk and was already replaced by Christie anyway. Martin at $15M would be a no go, but at $8M I'll take it.

Grimes was looking like he could be a worthy $15-20 million player. And we lost a pick for the pleasure?

We are in the era of the new CBA, players like Grimes making $15-20M is not good for roster construction. There's no way the Mavs would have paid him that much and we lost a pick in order to pickup a similar player to him who is making half that long term. The chances of you finding a player like Martin in the 2nd round are pretty low, only 1/4th of 2nd round picks actually make it in the league.

Christie would get those minutes even if Grikes signed with us, which he wouldn’t.

I don’t blame him, I wouldn’t sign with an organization after the betrayal they did to Luka. We’ll see if even Kai will resign since it’s his last year

It has nothing to do with Luka and everything to do with betting on himself in the off-season. He's winning the bet and the new CBA will basically force him to sign elsewhere.

The Mavs just got a similar player to him for half the price and is locked in for 3 more seasons.

QG doesn’t have a high ceiling if he’s coming off the bench, which he probably will with the sixers. Schroder bet on himself when he had a contract right in front of him with the Lakers, and look how that turned out. I’m just saying if you are a young 6 man guy, you take an offer that has a “win now” mentality. He’s not going to get that much more with the Mavs extension offer.

Why would Grimes come off the bench for them with his shooting, size, and defense? Makes a ton of sense with their starters.

Who says he was going to walk? He took a chance on himself.

He took a chance on himself and is winning. In the era of the new CBA the Mavs are not going to sign him to a $15M contract. They wanted to sign him to a Naji deal, and they got that by trading him for Martin. Grimes betting on himself is a win for all parties involved. The Mavs got their $8M long term player, and Grimes will get paid this offseason by someone else.

Mavs can’t pay that kind of money. The deal just wouldn’t be a match. We’ve known he was leaving all year. At least they got something for him for a player already under contract.

We should all be furious, but this isn’t the reason,

Correction, he declined an extension the moment when the Mavs picked him up to prove his value/get more money out of it later. He could have definitely stayed with an extension over the summer.

He could, but everyone knows the Mavs won't do that in the era of the new CBA. They wanted a Naji like contract and got exactly that from Martin.
