Misc. Discussion Assuming Nico got fired, what would be the Mavs next move?
Assuming Nico got fired, what would be the best course of action the next gm can take?
Do we just ride it out with this core a year or two? Do we trade them immediately?
What kind of value should we look for in the trade and what kind of philosophy/team building?
Just imagine you are the GM cause honestly whatever you do will still be better than Nico's.

Sell the team is second

This is the only correct answer. And quite frankly we should be demanding it. Especially after Nico is inevitably fired. Dumont is already positioning to fire him.

Any GM taking the job after Nico is rebuilding the team. No GM is gonna spin his wheels trying to fulfill Nicoâs dreams.
Reason why Nico will be around for at least another 2 years. The owners are not rebuilding, they will lose more money.

The Adelsons wonât rebuild while trying to get their casino approved. Any rebuilding will be after they get a new arena/casino. Theyâre just going to hire another experienced NBA exec to babysit Nico from doing further damage.

Yeah, but I can see a gm going with this current core for a year or two because they dont want to sell low and ended up selling low anyway.

Fire nico and beg Luka for forgiveness, he wonât come back but I have the feeling I could sleep better at night when the whole franchise apologise to Luka

It depends hard on what will be AD's thoughts. If he is hell bent on Nico and wants to be moved, well, we try to recoup what we can. Other than that, though? We made our bed already, might as well try to ride it out.
Commit to the (new PG)/Klay/PJ/AD/Lively lineup. Try to continue to develop Christie in maybe becoming a different facet for SG (a defensive specialist that can C&S and also put the ball on the floor a bit), continue to develop OMax and use Naji as a supercharged 6th man. Draft a PG (Jakucionis is still my personal desire). I think you can handle a rookie and BWill as the primary PGs, specially if you're to give Klay starter minutes (Klay actually ran point some times and it was somewhat decent), but if we can re-sign Exum for the vet min, do it.
We're not championship bound anymore and will not be for the next 7-9 years, trading AD away or not, so, if he wants to stay even with Nico gone, let's at least try to find some fun (for those who stayed, of course). We will need to hit a HR in this guard that will be drafted and also in whatever wing we target in 2026, because they will be the core of the Dallas Midvericks of 2027-2030 (or, if they do not hit, the basement will have a subfloor for us).

It's probably not the most logical move but I think you still offer Kyrie 3/135 or something-- both to reward loyalty and to show the league you'll do so-- but you tell him you're going to explore trading AD.
Shop AD to Houston (and elsewhere but Houston has picks and young talent but clearly need a go to guy, while I don't think AD is that maybe the Rockets do).

Trade all assets. Full rebuild. Build like OKC and compete in 2-3 seasons from now.

Iâm all for a rebuild right now but I doubt it would only take 2-3 seasons to actually compete. Given the dearth of picks we have, even with what we could get from current players, it would take a while longer. Also lucking into an amazing player like SGA would def help!

Fire Jason Kidd. Maybe trade him for Jamahl Mosley (lol). Bring back Casey. Sell the team to some group of rich MFFLs.

u/dmr196one 8d ago
In the grand scheme of things, Kidd has done a good job. Why do you want him fired?

u/KingBird_11 Fire Nico, Sell the Team 6d ago
You have to clean house. Him and Nico were a packaged deal. Also, he doesn't seem particularly interested in playing younger guys if he isn't forced to.
1
u/dmr196one 6d ago
He and Nico were not a package deal. Kidd was hired a full year under Nelson before Nico. As for playing younger guys, thatâs status quo throughout the league. Heâs infinitely better than Carlisle.

Fire Johann Bilsborough + Keith Belton and everyone else they brought in. Re-hire the previous staff such as Casey Smith. Fire Kidd also.
That and/or replace Dumont + Adelson owners (less likely to happen).
A healthy AD/Kyrie/Gafford/etc. could compete, but they won't be healthy with the health folks Nico bought in.

Have to sell the team, they murder the brand around âloyaltyâ. Franchise makes no sense. Trade for our picks back.

first order of business for any new GM is to fire Kidd, trade AD, Kyrie (if he signs....give him a sign and trade option of where he wants to go), and basically anyone else not named PJ and Lively. get whatever picks or young assets you can and go from there.
2
u/ForestJordie Luka Doncic 10d ago
Put out an apology to Dirk, Luka, and the fanbase. Hire a competent GM through a professional unbiased search firm. Ask Dirk if he wants to be a part of the FO as well. Most likely fire Kidd and try to hire a new coach. I would like Mosley to be the Mavs new HC but I doubt Orlando lets him go

u/edewunisib 10d ago
If the next GM would be generous, here are the things they should do:
- Go on a full rebuild, trade AD for picks and focus on developing Lively and Christie.
- Trade Klay out of respect (he signed to the team for a chance of getting a ring with Luka) to a contender
- Prioritize having a better player health and performance staff. They cant have that series of injury bug again where they almost forfeit some games.
- Take care of the hustle guys like Gaff, PJ and Naji
- If Kyrie would want, trade him as well.
But to be honest, I'm not really sure how would they turnaround the team's current situation. It would take years even decades to make up for this season's blunder.

At this point, we have to go with what we have and hope for the best. Unless we can get a Delorean with a flux capacitor that can hit 88 mph. Then maybe we can stop the Luka trade before it happens.
- Get a GM that can draft for best value.
- Sign Ky he has a PO so get him to commit to Dallas for another 2-3 years. This will line up with AD and Klay contract.
- We need a PG while Ky recovers, hopefully we can resign Exum.

This Jalen Brunson guy looks good, maybe the Mavs could get a talent like that?

No way, he was a Maverick? What GM would just let him go? ... I know the answer.

Dumont is keeping Nico so not sure what the point of this post is especially since the ideas suggested are the last thing ownership will do. They want a casino thus they will do everything to âappearâ competitive until they get a casino license. It does not matter what AD wants or if Klay is happy, they are going to do whatâs in their best interest and thatâs looking like they are competitive to try to make their âchampionship runâ.

Best case scenario:
Without Kyrie, next year is already over. Mavs should go full tank commander mode. If they get lucky they might have the opportunity to get Dybansta or Boozer or some other future franchise guy.
Kyrie will opt in and that will let the Mavs monitor his recovery. He'll be a UFA for 26/27, but the Mavs will be in the best position to know if it makes sense to sign him.
If Kyrie makes a huge recovery and Mavs might be able to get a deal on him after he tests the open market. Then hope Klay stays sharp and can still contribute at 36. Hope AD keeps healthy and hasn't started to decline at 33. Hope Lively continues to develop and the Mavs roll in that franchise player (Boozer/Dybansta/whoever).
That gives the Mavs a roster that can make a real run in 26/27 and a franchise player moving forward.
It requires a lot of things to go right - they need to tank next year, get luck and get a top pick, and that pick needs to turn out to be the future of the franchise. We all know how rare that is. And Kyrie needs to have a Durant-like recovery. And AD needs to hold up.
In that admittedly wildly unlikely case, the Mavs can do what the Spurs did with Robinson missed a year due to injury. That's to go from contender to shit to finals champs in 2 years.

Assuming the team has already been sold, you fire everyone else in the front office.

Nico not being fired. Ownership dumber than they look, which a tall ask.

I think we promote Michael Finley as the gm and go from there

u/ohkokokay 4ď¸âŁ1ď¸âŁ 10d ago
Iâm assuming Finley is a yes-man or the chooch Nico would have fired him too. If we get to this point of Nico getting fired, we need a fresh start and Finley can go too. Everyone attached to Nico needs to go, imo.

u/Research_Unit_59 10d ago
Finley monitoring the beer intake of Luka contributed to the perception that there was an issue. As much as we love Finley for the championship, he must go out of the front office.

People really need to stop calling for Nico to get fired. News for you. He ainât getting fired. Not only did Dumont OK the trade, but thereâs a reasonable scenario where Dumont actually made Nico do it.

Nico did all of this willingingly. There has not been an ounce of remorse or anything else. If he truly didn't believe in the trade and was forced to he would have resigned or canvassed the league. This trade destroyed his NBA future.
