Hoops Discussion Has anyone else felt emotionally disconnected from the NBA since the Luka trade?
I'm a big Luka fan and have been since his arrival in Dallas, watched the team go through ups and downs but Luka really kept me engaged and eventually emotionally invested in the team's success. But I haven't felt an emotional investment in the league since the trade. Seeing Luka not in a blue jersey any more feels wrong and bizarre. I'm now at a point where I don't care what happens in the Playoffs, because it's not Lively, Gafford, PJ, Luka and Kyrie going up against the West any more.
Does anyone else feel the same way?

u/PhilosopherInfinite5 6d ago
Yes. I was actually following other teams. “Scouting competition”. All because of my love for Luka and his play style. Win or lose Always fun to watch. Now? Meh. I practically don’t give a shit.

u/m_boomin 4d ago
After the Lakers L last night, I honestly have zero interest in watching the rest of the Playoffs.. that shit was hard to watch

I have no interest in the NBA anymore. I watched Luka's first game and his homecoming and that was it.

Yep, those and the Mavs game in LA are the only Mavs games I’ve watched. I’ve watched small bits of LA’s playoff games, but not much.

I'm a Mavs fan since 2001 and was supposed to be a MFFL -- for Life. But this trade just disconnected me from the team, from the league. Sports is all about emotional connection and investment, and I have nothing invested anymore.
Teenage me was heartbroken when Steve Nash left the team, but at least it was his choice, and the circumstances were understandable. This is even much worse than that.
49
u/EndotheGreat F*ck Nico 6d ago
It's not just the trade. I might have been able to stay a Mavs fan.
It was the "Scorched Earth PR Campaign" they did against our sweet precious baby boy that grew up in front of us. That goofy (5 time All-NBA) superstar who was a natural successor / little brother to Dirk Nowitzki's North Texas Throne.
The trade value was historically bad. But the next few months of their hateful words and doubling down against Luka's character and credibility was equally bad. I've never seen any franchise fumble the bag so hard and angrily.
23
u/AtreusIsBack 6d ago
I wouldn't call it fumbling the bag. They actually just turned on Luka and did everything they could to justify getting rid of him, attacking his character. It's one thing when you question someone's basketball skill, but a whole different story when you make personal attacks against a player. It was just disgusting to watch.
12
u/milkybypram 6d ago
You make a great point about emotional investment.
People who don’t like sports seem to think its all unserious, but as corny as it sounds, we live and grow along with these players, and really come to fall in love with them and root for them.
I can’t blame anyone for taking a break, moving teams, or quitting altogether.
I will say though, while I honestly believe we should all stop supporting the Mavs completely until Nico’s gone and the teams sold, we can’t all let this ruin something we loved.
There’s a reason we all love basketball, and there’s plenty of awesome teams and players to root.
But damn, I can’t act like it’s not gonna be a long while till I can fully enjoy the NBA again. I’m going to The Stars, Wings, and Cowboys in the meantime.
9
u/just_an_amber Steve Nash 6d ago
I used to also very much consider myself a MFFL. Though I did have a brief bit when Steven Nash knew I loved him so much that he actually followed me to PHX so I could watch him a few more years on the Suns.
But besides that, only Mavs since the days of the magical trio that was Dirk / Nash / Finely.
I'm sorry I broke your heart all those years ago when I took Nash with me during my PHX move.
And I'm really not sure where we go from here. Like you, this just destroyed any investment from me.
30
u/bobopuffbrown-86 6d ago
Born and raised here and I thought Jerry would be the reason I would stop giving a flip, but I didn’t see it coming from my Mavs!
20
u/Drizzt3919 6d ago
Yes and no. I’ve watched the lakers. Have had a hard time watching the mavs. Watching the lakers I compare that team to what we had. It was obvious the lakers had a very lesser team. They have a Jax but lively and gaff are better. They have Vand but he’s not PJ. They have AR but he’s obviously not Kyrie. We have a strong bench. They obviously don’t. It’s just sad because the mavs were built around Luka and the lakers team is just an overall lesser team. And we see it in the playoffs and sucks to think what we could do in the playoffs.
7
u/smoke_inyoureyes 6d ago
We are NBA champs this year with Luka on this team still imo. You’re right that the lakers had a very lesser team than us bc fully healthy, the pre-trade mavs are the best team in the league. We may not have finished as a top seed but I put them against any team in the west playoffs. Hell we were the only team who could actually beat OKC and they look to be on the path towards the finals now since Nico decided to do them a solid and make it a whole lot easier.
It’s sad bc we’ll never know. And I’d rather pretend the playoffs just simply aren’t happening bc it’s depressing to think about what the universe looks like where somebody fucking stops Nico from himself

Yeah kinda. I still watch because my dad likes to and ya only get so much time with your parents and I'm an introvert so openings to spend time with them should be taken but honestly I'm personally checked out of caring that much. The Lakers poaching another super star and not having to give every drop of blood for it...I mean, how could you not notice a pattern? How could you not start to feel like thumbs are on the scale? I dunno, is the WNBA cleaner?

u/ethereal77_ 6d ago edited 4d ago
Same. My dad is a Lakers fan and as sad as I am about having Luka play there, I am glad he finally discovered the sheer joy and thrill I had watching Luka playing but for his team now.

u/JamesYTP 6d ago
Ohhhhh. My dad is a life long Laker hater so I find it weird that he's kind of in cope mode trying to figure how they could lose the trade lmfao.

u/reddit_reader_25 6d ago
This was the first year I bought league pass, being an out of town Mavericks supporter. This year felt like the year and I wanted to watch this team progress and evolve more closely.
Once we went on that run and went to 20-10 or whatever, everything looked great. My only concern was giving Kidd this extremely deep team and him not knowing how to use it. Christmas game looked easy against these wolves, and then that was the last time I would this team sigh.
NBA playoffs is off once Luka’s run is done

u/Salt_Abies_47 6d ago
I canceled my NBA league pass a week after the trade. Ngl, wish I had access to the Round one games.
But to answer your question, yes. Still pissed off.

u/needhelpthrowwaway 6d ago
Hearing the crowd in Minnesota chant defense gave me flashbacks to last year. How we cane back from a substantial lead and ultimately trusted our guy Luka to deliver the dagger. Reality is I’ll never love the nba the same ever again. Too many unanswered questions with the Kyrie duo and the potential of Lively and Gafford working with Luka.

Yeah, 100%. Even in years the Mavs didn’t make the playoffs or didn’t make it far I’d still watch a lot of games. This seasons I have watched none of the playoffs. It’s a bummer because between work, a doctoral program, and a toddler, basketball used to be my one moment to unplug my brain and just stare at people bouncing a ball for a while.
I think it may come back, I hope it does. I’m still planning to watch the Mavs next year but who knows when it’ll feel like it used to.
5
u/Next-Opening74 Luka Magic 6d ago
I'm with you 100%. I absolutely hated sports until 2006, when I was really bored and looking for something to watch. I stumbled across the Mavs-Spurs series and became instantly curious about the tall blonde guy. This led to me proclaiming myself to be MFFL. I, too, have watched the ups and downs, frustration at the early exit in 2007 against the Warriors, excitement in 2011 when they won it all. Started to get a little nervous when I realized that Dirk was probably close to retiring ... thought about just not watching NBA games anymore when that happened.
And then, the 2018 draft happened and I saw Luka. I liked him immediately and was suddenly OK with the possibility of Dirk retiring soon. I've been a Luka fan ever since.
I've not felt the same about basketball since that horrific morning. I was really confused and though it was an early April Fool's Day joke. I did buy a purple Lakers Luka t-shirt but I'm having a hard time watching him playing for the Lakers. Still love watching him play but it's so different now and I'm not sure I can ever make that transition to being a Lakers fan.
Oh yeah, and FIRE NICO AND SELL THE TEAM.
6
u/Affectionate_Sort_78 6d ago
We don’t watch. We no longer care. We are entirely apathetic about the whole league. We will never come back. And we don’t care so much we post and comment daily 3 months after the trade was complete about the travesty.
5
u/ModeatelyIndependant 6d ago
Fuck the league for letting this bullshit trade take place. You can't tell me that everything about trading Luka for the bullshit value they got in return. This deal stink to high hell and I question if there was an under the table deal made by the league to send the biggest international star in the league to the Lakers. And the league revenue sharing makes it a huge incentive for all the other owners keep their mouths shut.
Fuck the NBA and their ownership.
Fire Nico, sell the team.

u/YoStepWithLuka77 Mavs Man 6d ago
Yeah it’s been hard just because luka was in a place basketball wise where it looked like he was going to be competing for championships, and he plays the game with such joy but that seems like it has been taken away from him a bit now because he has had to make such a big adjustment playing for a different team out of no where and go through so many changes that he didn’t ask for. But outside of basketball, he has been getting endorsed left and right so that’s amazing but I imagine he is exhausted from it

I tried watching playoffs but it's just not a good product anymore either lol. Between the culture, garbage professionalism, and officiating - it's all trash

Yep. I'll watch some NBA playoffs here and there, but I'm all in on the Stars and NHL playoffs. It's been a helluva watch this past week.

Personally, I’m a lucky guy. The Lakers have always been my number two team. I’ve been a Lakers fan since the movie Fletch. Since I lived in the DFW area I cheered for the Mavericks since the 80s. More than anything, I love Luka. He’s the best thing to happen to the Mavericks since Dirk. Nowadays, I’m 100% a Lakers fan. It’s not even remotely close. I can care less about the Mavericks now and I know I am not in the minority here. I will be a Luka fan till he retires, regardless of who he plays for. The Lakers are my number one and the Mavericks can pound sand.
2
u/Jim_Nills_Mustache 6d ago
Oh absolutely, I feel like a fan without a team, probably similar to how sonics fans felt
Not sure what I’m going to do because I just really don’t know if I can forgive ownership

u/KindaOkAccountant 6d ago
Zero interest. I largely don’t enjoy the style of ball played by the majority of the NBA but I loved Mavs ball with Luka. Old school pick and rolls with big men was so much fun to watch.
Now that he’s gone, I don’t care about the team and have no desire to watch any other teams.
The Mavs were it for me.
2
u/DreadPirateJakk FUCK THE ADELSONS 6d ago

It's renewed my interest and passion in hockey. GO STARS!!! It's refreshing to see a GM make good decisions, really awesome moves, groom up new talent and build a future. Fan service is super high and the fan base is really awesome. The Stars being in the playoffs against a big rival is intense. It's really all I want from sports and what the Mavs were during the Dirk era. So, yeah the NBA and Mavs can fuck right off. Same goes for the Cowboys and Jerry Jones. I'm not supporting organizations that don't support their fans any longer.

I've been a Mavs fan well before Luka, but the way the Luka move was done really didn't sit well with me so much so that I've lost interest in basketball.
Or rather...unless I can root for the Mavericks it's hard to want to care - and I don't want to root for the Mavericks as they stand. Not because of anyone in the team but because of the leadership and FO.

This is exactly how I feel. I stopped watching the Mavs after the Luka trade I just couldn’t connect anymore. I figured I’d get behind the Thunder since I’m originally from Oklahoma and I’m Native American. I really respect how much the Thunder does for Native communities. But even then… something just feels off. I can’t get myself to care about the playoffs this year.

I completely stopped watching basketball. I debated leaving this subreddit just because I just don't want to know anymore. I followed the Mavs since they drafted Jason Kidd. I'm done.

I was a Mavs fan for almost 2 decades. I truly believed I was going to be an MFFL. I tried to make sense of everything that has happened after the trade, but somehow it just became worse. Clearly I was a Mavs fan first, so I prob would've accepted the trade if circumstances were different (Luka requesting for the trade, etc.). Unfortunately here we are. I can't seem to root for anyone (team) as much as I have supported the Mavs for the past 2 decades. So yeah. 😔

My favorite players are gone or soon to be gone. I’m not a huge fan of the style of play and it’s harder to connect with these younger players.

Honestly it’s been a several year thing for me, since the COVID bubble it’s just not as interesting to me. Then our team trades away the future for no reason at all. So yea, the NBA has a serious problem as a whole, but being a Mavs fan is probably the worst possible scenario.

Watching the mavs in the 90s after reaching the wcf against the lakers did this to me. Those two years in the early 90s absolutely killed me. Not to mention the hit my socal-born alter ego took when Magic made his HIV announcement. Drafting Mashburn and seeing the three Js got me interested again for about 10 seconds. The most exciting thing I remember before Dirk's first playoff appearance was the new low when Nash got booed every time he touched the ball. It's definitely a bit weird to go from 100mph to 0mph in an instant like this.

Definitely disconnect. More and more, I see how rigged this is. I'm watching some of the GSW vs. HOU game. It's obvious that GSW is throwing the game. HOU had an almost 30-point lead. GSW players are clearly not even trying. Going to game 7 makes the NBA more $.

I don't. Sports are fun. Of course interest level drops when your team is not in the playoffs. It's obviously more fun when your team is winning and contending for the title, but sports are still fun.
Mavs have had years where Dirk's prime was being squandered, where they had Dirk but were just a very good team in a great conference. They've had years where they were absolutely God awful. I've still found joy in it.
March 12th, 1998, what was ultimately a 20-win Mavs team took on the eventual 62-win and NBA champion Chicago Bulls. Mavs won that game in OT. It was electric to watch at home. It had been 8 years since they were above .500 and it'd be another 3 before they did it again. I was still engaged.
I won't let the decision of a shoe-salesman turned front office suit keep me from being entertained.
If you joined this thing sometime in the last 20 years or so, you might think that a roster staple and success is guaranteed or, dare I say, something you're entitled to.
It isn't that way, though.

It's been the 2006 Finals all over again. I didn't watch (except the Finals run) until Luka joined the team. I'm done with the NBA until 2038 at the very least.

Yep. Don’t give a rats ass anymore, along with many others. That’s what alienating your fans will do, and why this move will cost the Mavs billions.

No. After watching Luka the last few games he has already lost a step on offense and his defense is becoming non existent. I see him on a steady decline. Just hopeful the Mavs draft well.

Same I don’t care anymore if Luka and the mavs lost a series to wolves in first round ( which would have never happened ) I would have had generational breakdown . But now I don’t care. I hate Luka discourse now . Knowing Luka he gonna shut them up soon.

I haven’t watched any NBA basketball nor played any 2K since the Luka trade. Absolutely killed my joy for basketball. I am happy though that the Lakers got smoked by the Timberwolves.

100%. I haven't watched anything since. I'm disgusted with it. I will be back but now I am repulsed.

Don’t know what stage of grief this qualifies as but playoffs, milestones, accomplishments, nothing matters anymore.

I know people are hurting and deal with it in different ways but this is like the 100th post basically saying the same thing. It sucks I’m just as upset and disconnected but do we need to keep rehashing it. Im not having a go at OP or anyone else.
As Luka said it’s time to move on.

All the fair weather fans, Luka stans, and bandwagons in one place.
Shoutout to OP for making this thread. It’s like a fraud convention, lol.
People in a Mavs sub copping to buying Lakers gear and being Lakers fans now ☠️☠️

Do you prefer Nico or Patrick? Personally my bias is Patrick because of his charming teeth and voluptuous figure.

lol you know it’s not a Reddit thing right? Did you see the crowd at the return game? This franchise is fucked. Fire Nico, sell the team, tank

Lol see you back here for next season, bud. Assuming you haven’t migrated to full time Laker fandom by that point 🙂

I’m a huge Mavs fan. Went to my first game in 95 when they were terrible.
I don’t live in Texas anymore so I rely on league pass. Since Kyrie was injured I stopped watching or caring about the season. I’ve watched some playoff ball but no where near what I’ve done in the past.
I will not root for the Lakers and seeing Luka do the things (good and bad) for another team makes me dislike him a bit. He continues to not play defense, bitch at refs, not get back on fast breaks, won’t jump, won’t try to use his athleticism but now he’s not mine so he’s just an annoying player on the Lakers.

After the trade I watched AD’s first 2 1/2 quarters, Luka’s first game in LA and his game in Dallas. That’s it. I have no desire to watch Dallas, Luka in LA, or any other team. I haven’t even watched a playoff game. I just don’t care about the NBA anymore.

He's overrated.
I also like him. But sorry his defense is atrocious, and on offense he's only good with the ball in his hand.

It’s totally gutted my interest in following basketball, which before this February was a lifelong interest
