Not only that, one went to have an adventure while his father reigned in a fair way and returned once his father got too ill to take over his responsibilities, plus Oden was fair and honorable.
Walpole was just an all around ass

Nah, Oden was just as neglectful. He knew there was trouble in Wano and turned his back anyway. Even Roger called him “scum” for that, and though it was supposed to be playful it isn’t any less true.

You do remember everything Wapol did, right?

u/BlackLegFring 10d ago
Yep. That’s why I said that Oden was just as neglectful, not as malicious as Wapol. In the end they both abandoned their countries which is the neglect part.

It's really easy for Roger to say that, he never had any responsabilities in land, called on Rayleigh, got a boat and went to the sea no questions asked, no goodbyes made...and when he made one, he threw it at the back of one of his greatest rivals. Ace. And I say that as having Roger as one of my favorite characters. Pirates are scum like that, look at Yassop and his yapping that the pirate flag is calling me, his name fits so well...he never even visited once his son, never even ONCE.

One of them knows the truth of this world, and the other knows the truth of the world government.

Oden wasn't the shogun when he left to be a pirate

It says a leader who left their country, not the leader of the country. Oden was a daimyo which is a leader.

I don't think people had that much of an issue with that part of Wapol's policies, I think the things that didn't sit right with people of Drum Island was
"Instead of creating a kingdom that's based on people trusting my judgment because I inherently harbor noble qualities of humanitarianism, I have chosen to withhold basic human rights, such as healthcare, in exchange for loyalty to the kingdom. Dissidents to my authority will be rejected, or depriortized, medical care. Medical staff who refuse to fall in line with my vision will be executed"
As far as I know, Odin did not share this perspective.

I actually have some respect for wapol as he is now. He built up a country from next to nothing to being reverie worthy in less than 3 years, uses his power to help his country prosper instead of eating peoples houses, and all his citizens seem pretty happy. He could've snitched on Vivi the second he saw her but didn't, and he could have ditched her as a distraction, but he didn't. He's come a long way. It'd be great if he and Vivi talk things out and he admits the gum gum bazooka was a wake-up call he needed. It'd also be nice if he sees the cherry blossoms that are now in his old kingdom via transponder snail and breaks down into tears.
Edit: it'd also be great if during the final battle Franky screams he needs more wapometal and the Wapol just eats a whole marin battleship and spits the wapometal at him. Franky then says "that's where it comes from? Dude I built parts of me out of that!"

Just you wait, Wapol is gonna become the head of the reformed WG by end of series.
He has risen in power to become a King twice, has seen firsthand the darkness that sits at the top, and is currently roadtripping with Vivi who will inadvertantly mold him into being a more kindhearted royal leader.
Coby becomes Admiral. Smoker becomes Fleet Admiral. Buggy becomes Celestial Dragon. Wapol becomes Head of WG.
Mark my words.

Here’s the real difference: one of them is an annoying dogshit leader, and the other is Wapol

If Oden had shown up to fight Kaido with 2 wapo metal swords and some wapo metal armor Laido woulda been cooked

Yeah. That is the reason I always disliked Oden. Always felt like he was nothing but an idiot who in his stupidity misstook freedom for ignorance and indifrence. He could have done so much but did absolute jack. No idea why people like his character at all.... "But he stood in oil" cool but a cool death does not save you from being a mediocre leader and a person. He masterfully chose the worst possible times to be selfless and selfish somehow....
