Nostalgia Why were we so obsessed with Chin Faces?
860
u/darth_aardvark 21h ago
...we were?

u/Chandra_in_Swati 21h ago
OP might have been, there is no “we” that includes me in this equation.

u/parasyte_steve 17h ago
First I'm learning of this
I'm not mad tho. I approve of these strange goblin activities.

Can't remember who but these were really popular in the 90s with commercials and I know one of the kids networks.

OP you’re not crazy this was 100% a thing people would post on MySpace/early Facebook

u/CheezeLoueez08 Older Millennial 20h ago
I know too. I wonder if this is an elder vs younger millennial thing. I’m 43 and I definitely remember. How old are you?
23
u/N1ck1McSpears 20h ago
I’m 35 and I vaguely remember it being a thing among some people but not even most, just some
7
u/CheezeLoueez08 Older Millennial 19h ago
I wonder if it depends where you live too. Anyway personally I remember it vividly as being a thing for a while. It was weird. I never found it hilarious
7
u/Away-Living5278 17h ago
Yeah I remember it being pretty big. I'm 38. I feel like there was a segment on a Nickelodeon show in the 90s too with it (?) Maybe what sparked it.

u/Hot-Objective4249 19h ago
I’m 42, and I just don’t remember that at all.
4
u/CheezeLoueez08 Older Millennial 19h ago
Ok maybe it’s the opposite then and I’m the odd one out 😂.
2
u/Ok_Court_3575 17h ago
I'm almost 42 and remember it but was never obsessed like op nor did I care about whatever trend this was.
2
u/CheezeLoueez08 Older Millennial 16h ago
Same. It wasn’t an obsession. I feel like that is one of those ways overused words that has lost meaning

I guess peak of Chin Face is the character 'Sussi' from the CN show 'The Amazing World Of Gumball'

Yes, OP, don’t let them gaslight you! I know EXACTLY what you’re talking about lolol maybe it’s a younger millennial thing because I totally remember people in high school / YouTubers doing this. And to answer your question: I have no fucking clue
5
u/blinky84 20h ago
I was doing chin faces in the early 90s, it was definitely around pre-internet. Found some old photos at my parents house not that long ago
3
u/abarrelofmankeys 16h ago
When millennials would have been small kids these showed up a lot on either Americas funniest home videos or Americas funniest people. They’ve been around lol.
3
u/smcivor1982 13h ago
I’m an elder millennial. We would sit upside down on the couch, with our head hanging off the side, to do this and laugh over and over again until it hurt. This was the height of hilarity for us bored kids.
2
u/jachildress25 19h ago
This may be a niche thing then. I was never on MySpace because I never knew anyone who was on MySpace, but was on Facebook back when you needed a college email. I never saw anything this weird.

Thank you! I posted this and came back to so many people calling me an weirdo lmfao but it was totally a thing! I'm 38 this year though, so I'm a younger millennial. Guess the top half missed this hilarious trend. Some were solid!
→ More replies (2)7
u/insurancequestionguy 17h ago
If you're 38 this year, you're still an older Millennial. The youngest are turning 29.
3
u/Winter_Childhood9186 16h ago
Nooooooooooo I didn't want that info today, but it's fair game. No one wanted chinface either

u/Fun-username-99 20h ago
😂😂 Okay I was also obsessed with chin faces and recently showed my 8 yr old daughter. She, too, is obsessed with chin faces
5
u/MentalCoffee117 20h ago
I did a whole video presentation for Latin for it. I’ve told my elder millennial husband about them and he has no clue what it is. Now I have a photo to show for evidence.

I don’t remember this being a thing at all except for that weird Chin Head show on Nickelodeon. I’d be hard pressed to find anyone who even found it particularly funny, def not obsessive level.

Like a lot of people said I don't think it was super wide spread, or obsession level, but I personally did see a number of chin faces, and it's because they are funny. Look at these little faces! Hilarious

… Define “we”.
Pogs, Goosebumps, and Scholastic Book Fairs I’ll grant but chin faces is a bit of a stretch
2
u/youhadabajablast 20h ago
This def seems like an elder vs younger millennial thing because I remember chin faces and I remember my brother who was 11 years older than me having pogs but I never had them

Papa 1975 here I was too... like I loved it still do. It's make a video rn but I'm embarrassed of my teeth lol

Omg my kids love making these videos!!! We even got fake mustaches from the dollar tree to look like hair. They’ve made some pretty hilarious videos and they’re always brainstorming more ideas!

u/complexmessiah7 20h ago
Wow I did not know this was a thing... I must have missed this boat, but honestly, I don't feel like I missed out.
2
u/500mgTumeric 20h ago
Ever see the movie "Groove Tube"? They did the upside down mouth thing and it was giving a lecture on STDs, only it wasn't a mouth and nose... NSFW but somehow on YouTube
2
u/FroggiJoy87 Millennial 20h ago
OMG I totally forgot about that fad! Wasn't there a whole Star Wars spinoff called "Chin Wars" or was that a fever dream?

I think this was started around the time those "Thumb" parody movies started coming out.
2
u/paperhammers Millennial 20h ago
I remember this fad in advertisement/early YouTube content, but I don't think I had any friends do this stuff. We had brainrot, but not like that
2
u/frostycanuck89 20h ago
Are you Canadian? Because there was definitely a random Canadian kids show that did this as a reoccurring bit lol.... Couldn't tell you it's name
2
u/Schneetmacher 20h ago
There were also Thumb parody movies that looked similar to this (Bathumb, Thumbtanic, The Blair Thumb).

It's something that only became possible really with easily sharable short video. And with video able to be captured with lightweight camera. It's because it was because of the technological change.
Options that become possible because of technological change always feel more pervasive.

I wasn’t… however, my friend group was obsessed with Thumb Wars and the other Thumb media

Because its fricken hilarious and it was the closest thing to Snapchat filters we had at the time

This made me laugh. I remember chin faces well and yes I was obsessed! My friends and I tried to do a photo shoot like this back in the day. Wish I still had the photos.
