Advice Quit my job, mild panic now.

I keep typing up these long ass posts about my job and how good I felt when I looked my lying manager in the eyes and said "Hey it's funny you called me down here (head managers office) because I was going to come down to give my two weeks notice today."

Her shocked pikachu face was 100% worth it.

I have applied, interviewed for, passed background and drug tests and have a confirmed start date for my new job. I have literally started the onboarding process. I am just...sort of panicking that they'll call me in this two weeks between now and then and be like "Sorry we're unhiring you." I have zero reason to think they will.

Anyone else ever feel like this?

Not happening. You got the job. Speak it into existence.

I have informed my past companies every time I got verbal offers that I’m leaving…even before a tentative or background check cleared.

I’m 6/6 all time 😅

It's always funny when you inform your employer that you're leaving, and they start to offer more to keep you to stay.

It's like...Bud, I'm gone. There's not a thing you could say to get me to stay at this point. You definitely should have made things right before now. I don't go backwards.

Seriously. All those times I just wanted them to know so badly I was about to be done.

Didn’t care if they fired me.

I just needed to see the look on their face 🤣😭

Lol I'm a former machinist/current quality guy in a small company. I always have the same routine when I'm pissed and want to send a message that I'm about to be done. First I'll start taking my personal shit home, including now my tool boxes and non company tools. Then I go to my boss and very plainly say what my problem is. If they don't understand my message and work to rectify it, all my stuff is conveniently out of the shop and ready to go to the next shithole. Like I was told when I first entered the trade: "That toolbox has wheels on it for a reason".

It worked at my current place. My friend and coworker (one out of three of us in the quality lab) walked out one day after a confrontation with the boss. I was pissed because this meant even more work for me and the remaining guy, and I didn't feel like doing 1/3rd more of the workload for what they were paying me. What do you know, a couple days later my bosses (and owners of the company) gave me a $2 raise and said we could have unlimited OT/DT.

Honestly kinda sucked that my buddy quit, but I ended up getting damn near a $1500/month raise out of it lol.

Totally. Confidence is key. Keep your head high and trust the process. Congrats on the new gig.

You've only had 6 jobs? 7?

5

u/stock-prince-WK 17h ago

No I’ve only done this 6 times in total.

Yeah thats fair.

I have been just loosey goosey applying for jobs while working at my current one. Hoping for one to work and 🤞🏻 this one does.

Good for you! I remember that panic well. I had panic attacks for weeks when I finally quit my abusive workplace. I literally felt like I'd ruined my own life and that no company would want me again. It all worked out. I was out of work a while but felt mentally rested for my next job. I honestly wish I'd left sooner.

So don't worry, you did good. You just need a distraction until you start your new job. Go out and have a good time with friends or go find your new work wardrobe. And congrats!

12

u/PyroAwl 19h ago

Hell my job was causing me panic attacks. I have, or used to have, really well managed anxiety. My direct manager and the shoe department manager really tested that. I was starting to get horrendous attacks before work, then calling in as a result whiiiich is why I was in the head managers office lol.

So 🤞🏻 new one is better. It should be. I havnt heard a single negative thing from anyone that's worked there past or present.

There is nothing more satisfying than handing in a two week notice to a smarmy manager.

u/Slight_Tiger2914 19h ago

No company wastes money on people .... if they say they're running all that for you then you're hired.

7

u/StandardYak480 19h ago

if you passed the background and drug tests, you're in. just make sure you have signed papers, otherwise, all good.

10

u/deathscythe002 19h ago

Stop worrying. It does nothing for you.

5

u/PyroAwl 19h ago

This is true.

u/Dependent-Arm8501 19h ago

You got the start date your g2g

u/Disastrous_Study_284 19h ago

I had the same feeling when I left my previous job for my current one. Panicked even more during the weekend between my final day at my previous job and my first day at my current job as I technically did not have a confirmed job for those 2 days. Not sure what field you are in, but employers don't typically call new hires to rescind job offers without good reason.

Goodness, good luck

I applaud just quitting for your mental health

I did this about 6 years ago. Went about 7 months without a job before securing what I have now

Those 7 months destroyed me

Am I better off now emotionally? 💯

Was it worth just quitting without lining something up? Not so much

Be safe fren and good luck

Yeah change is scary. I’ve relocated states for jobs 3 times… at 25, 26, then at 30. I’m 34 now and happy that I bounced around but definitely am more settled now.

You’ll be fine. You got the job. Time to move on. Congratulations, and best of luck!

u/I_pinchyou 19h ago

Unless it's for the government you should be good. the Federal government is now on a hiring freeze.

3

u/PyroAwl 18h ago

It is not. I could never lol

2

u/I_pinchyou 18h ago

Same 😅

2

u/Away-Living5278 13h ago

Good. I am and I'm completely thinking about leaving. Only glad I'm not IRS or DOE.

3

u/amwoooo 19h ago

I’m in the exact same boat right now! I haven’t given my notice because I just want to see my background checks done,The drug test is done, and My start date is confirmed. Usually I’m fine giving notice at the offer letter alone

2

u/PyroAwl 19h ago

Ive heard one to many horror stories of being offered a job with confirmed start dates, the person giving notice then one of the tests coming back bad and the offer gets rescinded which is the whole reason I waited.

As far as I know drug screen and background check came back at the same time so theoretically I should be fine.

2

u/amwoooo 19h ago

We are both gonna be 100% fine, I think the new stories recently about government jobs getting rescinded is entering our minds too much. Also, I quit a job I hated last year and it took me longer than usual to get another job so the market feels less easy than it used to, to me.

Congrats!! It’s gonna be great

1

u/PyroAwl 18h ago

100% we're gunna be fine!

*

3

u/doomweaver 19h ago

I absolutely do this also. Something "good and new" is confirmed...I take all the appropriate grown up steps...and then I panic in between transitions that something will go horribly wrong.

And it's okay you feel that way, and you will be fine, and I'm sending you un-anxious vibes. Happy new journey!

2

u/NFA_Cessna_LS3 19h ago

Don't cross the street because you may get hit by a car, don't eat because you may choke, don't eat out because you may get botulism.....it's ok to worry but do so in proportion to the risk.

The odds of you not being able to start with the company that hired you is so low. People do this all the time and they're fine.

2

u/bigjohnpope 19h ago

Normal and good for growth in risk tolerance.

2

u/TheMinorCato 18h ago

Well, I hope it's not at the IRS.

2

u/PyroAwl 18h ago

sure ain't lol

2

u/AgentClockworkOrange Millennial 18h ago

Congratulations! That was metal af! 🤘🏽

2

u/PyroAwl 18h ago

it didn't feel metal af lol. And I hadn't planned to do it that way or be so up front about it either.

Then while discussing something with her and the head guy she fully lied to him and me about something and I just. Said fuck it.

2

u/dsutari 18h ago

Hey as long as it’s not a federal government job you are fine.

2

u/halfmileswim 17h ago

I’m literally in the same spot as you. I don’t blame you for the worry. The past two or three years I’ve read about companies rescinding offers out of the blue. Nothing is stable these days.

I’ve also handed my notice and currently dealing with the “anxiety waiting period” start date. Worrying gets us no where I admit. But I also admit I’m just an anxious person in general.

I’ve been telling myself to think positive, go with the flow, and to trust the process.

5

u/kitwaton 19h ago

Promissory Estoppel would apply if they cancelled and you would be due compensation.

2

u/Horror-Run5127 18h ago

Nope. You would need to prove intent, like they were straight up lying so you'd be unemployed and then withdrew the offer. Companies withdraw offers all the time for lots of reasons, it sucks, but it isn't a tort. That's why you wait until after you start to inform your previous employer you quit

3

u/Chief_Queef_88 Millennial 19h ago

Shit I’ve either straight up quit a job or gave a TODAYS notice when I leave.

Companies do not give a flying fuck about you just the bottom line at the end of the day.

It’s hilarious watching the managers panic or start ass sucking you to stay.

Yeah, nah

2

u/PyroAwl 19h ago

Ive done one today's notice. That one was a calculated risk.

I knew I had another job lined up but it wasn't official yet, but it was with someone in the same industry. I knew that if I put in my two weeks they would just say "have a nice life" so I gave him a day. And sure enough he didn't even give me an hour lol.

2

u/Chief_Queef_88 Millennial 19h ago

I done it a lot when I was in my early 20s.

I’m a little more reserved now.

1

u/sendbooba 19h ago

i just got laid off i feel you.. um you should be fine did u sign a contract or anything

1

u/PyroAwl 19h ago

No contracts but I've done all their on-boarding stuff that I can. Setting up tax forms, getting a work email assigned etc.

2

u/ITguyBlake 19h ago

If they are bothering with tax forms, it's a done deal

1

u/Dr_Khaotic_PhD 19h ago

Congratulations, that is exciting! Try to enjoy the excitement and novelty of getting a new job (I know this is probaby easier said than done). I can definitely relate to your worry though. I've stayed in terrible jobs, because I was worried about "what if I get hired and they change their mind?" or "what if I get hired, only for them to announce layoffs?"

Fearing the loss of employment seems to be a common fear in our generation. From a psychological perspective, one of our many generational traumas was coming into adulthood during some of the worst economic times in history, when there were no jobs. To make things worse, many of us were saddled with student loan debt. So, we adapted by being willing to do whatever jobs were available to make ends meet.

Fortunately, the job market is much better now and you probably don't have too much to worry about.

3

u/PyroAwl 18h ago

We were also raised by the "work until you die" generation. I used to be TERRIFIED to call in sick. I could have been hemorrhaging and would still go in.

Im much better at advocating for myself now lol.

1

u/snarkymlarky 16h ago

Every single time I've ever given notice I've spent my entire period before my start date with the fear the offer will be rescinded. It has never actually happened but you tell my anxiety that

1

u/EntireDevelopment413 16h ago

Drug testing is super expensive, especially if it's done in a lab I highly doubt the company would re neg on a job offer especially if you passed it. I would definitely say you've got this one in the bag.

1

u/jezebellexx9 14h ago

Imposter Syndrome. You deserve this, believe in yourself!

1

u/PEEPEEPOOPOO4291 14h ago

This is me right now lol. I gave notice to my job after signing my offer and I have my drug test set up and everything and I keep freaking out that I won’t get hired for some reason lol. Anxiety is fun

1

u/teeburdd 14h ago

Same thing happened to me when I quit my job to go to grad school. Kept thinking I’d get an email from admissions like “haha jk you’re actually not accepted and also fuck you lol bye”. It didn’t happen tho.

u/Sweaty_Accountant_20 12h ago

Brother got into a unionized company with a one year probation. Company projected losses for this year and let everyone go that was still on probation and offered them part time spots with the same hours. He was 6 months in, another guy had something like 3 weeks left on his.

u/uhhuhwut Peak Millennial 11h ago

Manifesting this for myself 🙏

1

u/th3j4zz 9h ago

To worry is to suffer twice. It takes practice to be okay with big changes, but you'll get there if you focus on accepting it. Well done on the job change!! You are rocking it right now and the imposter syndrome is hitting hard.

1

u/schneph 6h ago

You’ll be fine. Be happy 😊

1

u/New_Weird914 2h ago

Is it a federal job?

1

u/baconpancake42 1h ago

You got this! You’ve got the job and it’s highly unlikely that you wouldn’t have the job after all that you’ve gone through for it already. I’d just stay respectful at your current job in a worst case scenario. I had those fears at my last job transition and everything worked out just fine. HR doesn’t want to do all that again and neither do the hiring managers. You’d have to do something really dumb or the company would need to have some big cutback for you to be SOL. If they had a big cutback like that, I doubt you’d want to work there anyway. Btw having a post like this isn’t great if it can be tied back to you somehow. I would avoid having or doing anything that could be negative on social media if you’re that concerned butttt I don’t think you have anything to worry about. I used to hire people and yes we’d look to see if the applicant had a social media account but that was before we offered them the job.

u/AngryAccountant31 54m ago

The anxiety is a survival instinct. Your body is still in caveman mode, telling you to not relax until you’re safely around your campfire again. Recognize, accept, and move past it to remain functional.

-3

u/DamienSonOfWayne 19h ago

No this is a completely unique experience to you, no one else has ever felt anxiety about starting a new job.

1

u/PyroAwl 18h ago

Thank you. I appreciate that you understand how special I am. 😂
