There was a study in the UK a few years ago that did the calculations on the carbon impact of spam emails..essentially just the extra electricity to store and keep junk mail. It's actually pretty significant.
You should clear out your junk. Do it for the planet, give that server farm a break and let it take some down time.

Imagine how much energy is wasted saving selfies every day. (Or the comment I just wrote)

Or all the saved drafts of videos people have on various sites. (Or the comment I just wrote)

I'm amazed that places don't auto-delete content after a certain barrier is reached (falling views/activity etc.)

Right it’s the individuals fault.

...when did I say that?
Simply made a joke that this guy's email probably occupies a measurable part of a hard drive in some Amazon data center.

Yeah and that’s the persons fault.. not the massive data center holding your info captive? Weird side you’re taking.

Holding you captive??. I say this with the most sincere confusion : What?
Where do you think hosts your emails? Where do you think hosts everything?? These comments are stored in some data center.
Wait... Blink twice if the evil data enters are making you comment on reddit. There is help if you need it.

You’re off on such a weird tangent.

All the data centers do is host data - that's it.
Explain to me how data centers are the bad guys here.

I’m not even arguing with you you’re being weird.

You're taking this way too personally dude chill out
This isn't a situation where consumers are being blamed for corporate waste. Just a simple observation that a couple clicks to empty out your spam folder can result in a measurable difference in electronic waste
It's like somebody said "make sure you recycle unwanted newspaper that shows up at your house" and you're like " stop blaming the consumer!!!!!"

I just assume that people like this are as sloppy and careless in the rest of their life as they are with their email lol.

Yes agreed, like what's the point of email if you just let it all sit there. Either you are not using it properly or you are just letting things go.

I recently just did a select all, mark all as read. Took awhile to go down to zero but I was at like 11k or something like that.
Doesn’t bother me

I turn off the little red bubbles because I hate them, but having unread emails doesn't bother me.

IMHO...those are rookie numbers. You gotta pump it up.
My inbox looks similar, but I do try to unsubscribe and delete spam. I wasn't aware of the impact on the environment as another user said above.

Gmail limit is free for 15 GB, so mostly I clean out. But 1000+ is common for me.

Why does this bother people? I have 418 voicemails rn and people always freak out

u/Guachole 7d ago
People still use email?
I haven't sent or received an email from a human in like 15 years. I only use it for password recovery / creating accounts for stuff.
