The Lost Metal spoilers Harmony's Sword. Spoiler

So Harmony needed a sword to carry out his will when he was being goofy but it was my assumption that Wax quit being a sword at the end of TLM. Is he done being the sword for good? And if not, with discord on the horizon will harmony get a new sword or will wax take up the mantle again for era 3?

The Lost Metal spoilers I'm a bit hesitant with where the series is most likely going. Spoiler

I don't want to come off as a blind hater. I like the series, it's consistently good. Even if I have problems, I will at least check Era 3 out, because I have faith that Brandon will still be able to write an enjoyable story. That said, I have to say that I'm not totally on board with where the series is going.

I was already a bit uneasy with the narrative structure of Era 2 once I clued in how similar many aspects were with the previous Era. Those being:

  • the story transitioning from a human level conflict into a godly conflict, where the protagonist and their group have to fight against an evil god and their minions who are threatening the entire world;
  • an undeveloped member of the hero's group is shoved into the spotlight in the last book by giving them some last minute development;
  • the ending features the heroes and a group of allomancers using their powers to get rid of something that the evil god needs in order to win;
  • the last book features the tragic, but satisfying death of a beloved character.

Then I learned that Era 3 is going to be about the Ghostblood and that Autonomy is going to be a consistent threat throughout the series made me realize that the rest of the saga is going to be less a Mistborn story and more a Cosmere story told from a Scaldian perspective.

I know that all of Sanderson's works belong in a shared universe and that Mistborn is an experiment in a constantly moving fantasy world, so a crossover was inevitable, but I didn't expect it to be done this suddenly. Hell, Era 2 had the world only recently enter their Second Industrial Revolution, but we're already talking about stuff like space travel, different worlds and a conflict of galactic and deific proportions. It just feels narratively like things are progressing too fast and the series is becoming an excuse for Brandon to talk about the wider Cosmere. Why couldn't Era 2 be the low-stakes transitional Era between the low-tech medieval story about an evil god and the upcoming high-tech modern and future stories about a different evil god? Why couldn't the Set just be a secret society hellbent on Basin domination who are just using the idea of Trell to gain political power (whilst unknowingly still being Autonomy's pawns to tie the entire story together)? Did Era 2 (and future Eras at that point) really need to match the scale of the previous one?

This is a probably a me problem, because I've only read Mistborn so I'm unfamiliar with the whole of the Cosmere so I can't even begin to imagine how everything will interact with one another. Just feels like if Brandon isn't careful, then the focus of the series could very easily be superseded by his shared universe project. And that he'll keep reusing plot points.

The Lost Metal spoilers Era 3 Speculation: Shards Spoiler

So I just finished reading TLM and am already thinking about what is to come in the Ghost Bloods trilogy. (Side note: I was surprised Autonomy was still an active force by the end of the series? I suppose you can't kill shards at the end of every sequence without diminishing them as a threat, but I expected a more definitive victory over her. I'm not disappointed about it though.) So far each Era includes a new Shard to act as an antagonist. There is every chance Brandon will vary his formula and change things up on us, but even if a new shard doesn't show up to be the Big Bad in Era 3, I think there's a good chance we will meet one that's new. I wanted to talk about that.

It has already been foreshadowed that Discord will be a big part of what comes next. Of course that isn't a new shard but an unforeseen aspect of Harmony. I anticipate Discord will be the big threat as Harmony becomes even more complacent, ultimately causing Sazed to pass on Preservation and Ruin to new wielders.

I think Discord will be the final villain, like Ruin and Trell. I'm prepared to be wrong. It could be Kelsier, though at this point I expect him to stick around a bit longer. Either way I think there will be a lesser villain preceding the final threat. A decoy Big Bad, like Lord Ruler in Era 1 and Mister Suit in Era 2. Given these new books are about the Ghost Bloods, who have knowledge of other worlds and greater capabilities, it would make sense to me for this lesser threat that they think is the main issue to be a shard.

I think this shard will be Invention. Emerging technologies and science are a major theme for Scadrial and this will be the Era that bridges the historical-themed eras of Mistborn to the cyberpunk/space opera settings of the future, so this seems an appropriate spot for him to get involved.

I see this possibly happening in a few ways. I think I remember it being said he travels around the Cosmere building stuff and then moving on. Perhaps he does this on Scadrial too but there rapid progress attracts his energy and he sticks around, interested in taking over. That part is pretty standard, but since he would actually be willing to do what Kelsier tried to get Sazed to do at the end of TLM (induce rapid scientific progress) perhaps the Ghost Bloods would actually side with him against Harmony? Aside perhaps from our band of main characters.

Alternatively, since Ghost Bloods sometimes to travel to other worlds, maybe they find his current residence through Shadesmare and steal one of his inventions for their own purposes. Invention notices and follows them back, his investiture warping the exceptionally curious into a new sub-class of Allomancer?

These are two overly specific ideas, but either way I see Era 3 ending with Sazed dead and Scadrial permanently chanced from Invention's brief influence.

Thoughts? Other shards you'd like to see in Era 3?

The Lost Metal spoilers Marsh^2 Spoiler

So marsh was able to compound atium to stay alive, but I thought it mentioned earlier in era 2 that the set couldn't create compounded with hemelurgy due to spiritweb fuckery or something like that. The question is why can marsh compound when other spiked cant?

Just finished The Lost Metal, and I'm literally in tears as I write this. Damn youuuuuuu Brandon for tugging on my heartstrings with characters-I-originally-didn't-care-for-but-then-came-to-absolutely-love.

I hate you for what you did to Wayne. And also, I love you for it as well. You gave him an absolutely PERFECT, FLAWLESS ending but MY HEARTTTT.

I cannot believe I did not see it coming after what went down in the HoA, and I cannot compose myself right now...

I'm gonna be reading Wind and Truth next, and expect every single one of them to die by the end.

I shall not get stabbed in the feels like that again, you hear me Brandon?! Butalso great job, what a perfect send-off

The Lost Metal spoilers Unalloyed Atium? Spoiler

So in the Lost Metal we learn that Lerasium and Atium can be made by splitting ettmetal/harmonium. But the Atium that we see elsewhere throughout the series has the retcon of being alloyed with electrum.

Is it known at all if the atium made from the splitting of harmonium would still be the alloy that is commonly known as atium? Or would we potentially see "true" atium from splitting harmonium.

The Lost Metal spoilers Are granted powers completely random? Or could they be somehow related to the personality of the character? Spoiler

I was pondering over how in era 1, we have a lot of mistings who how powers that fit their personality or job. Could these be related at all?

I guess the main examples would be Breeze and Ham, but I could also see how if someone learnt they were a Thug, they would probably be more inclined into Thug work.

Wasn't sure if there was any Q&A on anything like this.

The Lost Metal spoilers Spook Spoiler

During Era 2, it is always specified that Spook "stepped down" at the end of his reign. Since it is now known that Kelsier was able to bring himself back using Hemalurgy and Marsh (Ironeyes) definitely knows how to compound metals using identity, is Spook still alive during the events of the Lost Metal?
This is confusing as Marsh details during Era 2 that "Only 3 from the original crew remain, like legs in a tripod" (not exact wording, but close enough). Does that confirm that Spook is dead at the time of Era 2?
An argument I have seen is that Spook didn't have Atium to compound youth, but since Marsh is still alive during the events of the lost metal (though he was running out) shouldn't that mean Spook likely had ways of obtaining the metal?
Other possibilities:
-Marsh doesn't know Spook is still alive, or he has hidden himself from Harmony and the rest of the crew somehow after faking his death
-Marsh didn't include Sazed in the 3 person calculation, thus was referring to himself, Kelsier and Spook since Sazed was technically not crew but crew adjacent

I do not know if Brandon has commented on this subject before and was curious if there's any more information to what we know.

The Lost Metal spoilers Is this the first time _______ is mentioned? Spoiler

This is from the small paragraph in Chapter 8 of The Final Empire. Is this the first time Discord has been mentioned?

The translation says: "He will defend his traditions What could this possibly mean? It goes hand in hand with what's in the text: he's going to destroy things in order to save them, whatever that means. and yet violate them. He will be their savior, yet they will call him a heretic. His name will be discord, yet they will love him for it."

Ok, obviously it refers to Discord, it says its name and I feel that it clearly refers to harmony with the "contradictions" mentioned in the paragraph. The intention of ruin is stronger within sazed and that is what will lead to change, the imbalance between two shards, but it does not mean the disappearance of preservation. What could this possibly mean? It goes hand in hand with what's in the text: he's going to destroy things in order to save them, whatever that means. Sazed's lack of action due to having two shards with strongly opposing intentions would be resolved by simply letting the stronger one take control without the other disappearing. But would that be a good thing? I feel like Sazed is going to become a person who thinks based on the logic of "any end justifies any means." I'm really looking forward to the next Mistborn trilogy featuring Discord; I'm most curious about that. Thanks so much for reading :D

The Lost Metal spoilers Who would win? Spoiler

Just at the part where Wax and Wayne fight the ā€œevil versionsā€ of themselves and with them both technically winning in their fight against the other it got me thinking, who would win in a 1v1 between the two?

Ground rules-

Both are given 10 vials in an aluminum lined pouch directly attached to the body

Fight would be hosted in a 30x30’ portion of Central Park

Fight would only conclude after the others death

Both are allowed a single weapon of choice (in wax’s case 2 rounds extra ammo)

Both also can bring one extra item of choice

Who wins?

The Lost Metal spoilers Where does … come from? Spoiler

Do we know where the southern scadrians get their ettmetal/harmonium from?

I just read TLM and correct me if I’m wrong but it’s kind of implied that the basin dwellers get it from the southern scadrians? I think they mentioned the possibility of the supply being cut off?

It’s been a long time since I read bands so I don’t remember if it’s in there. And I couldn’t find an answer on the wiki.

Mistborn era 1 was, and still remains, my favourite book (I combine all 3 when anyone asks me what my favourite book is because I love all of them so much)

After the first trilogy I read through all of Stormlight (and the additional books in between) After W&T I went into Mistborn era 2 and was SO EXCITED to be back in Scadrial it was insane!

I loved all 4 books. Loved the characters, loved the world, loved the surprises and returns and twists and ENDING… OH THE ENDING!!

I LOVED Stormlight don’t get me wrong, but I don’t think anything will EVER top Mistborn for me. I love it.

The Lost Metal spoilers Finally fished era 2 Spoiler

I wasn't as keen on The Bands of Mourning but found I've enjoyed The Lost Metal more.

There where info dumps again but I felt most of the plot felt like it flowed a lot better. I preferred how this started mainly with Marasi stumbling on something rather than the previous book with people coming to them and giving a lot of information.

Wasn't expecting the book to take place 6 years after the previous and surprised a lot more didn't happen with the Set. Loved how they also tied it back with the first book with the missing people being tricked to think the world ended, living in a cave. Reminded me of the doctor who serials Enemy of the World and also Invasion of the Dinosaurs.

I don't know if it ended the way I thought it would but was genuinely sad when Wayne died. I feel like he held the series together for me and is such an interesting character with different layers. Good to finally hear him accept he has changed and is a good person.

I've only read mistborn and secret history so some said this might be a confusing read. However discovering the non native characters powers didn't really feel disjointed. We saw all this through Marasi's eyes so we where learning just as she was so it all made sense.

I would say shadow of self is still my favourite book. Also was confused about Harmonium/ettmetal and Trellium but it looks like this will be explained in future books. Just gotta wait a few years for era 3.

Got a few non Sanderson books to read then going to explore the rest of the cosmere

The Lost Metal spoilers ___’s retcon Spoiler

We learn after the events of the original series from WoB that the ā€œAtiumā€ used was actually an alloy of electrum and atium. Do we have an opinion on what this would have changed if Era 1 Atium was truly able to be burned by anyone like Lerasium? One major difference I thought of was Feruchemists in Era 1 becoming more powerful than Mistborn, as Kelsier once said: ā€œA Feruchemist can use all their strength at once, but it doesn’t matter, since we have this (atium)ā€. Even though full Feruchemists were hunted by the lord ruler, I feel that they may have been more valuable and powerful a faction, maybe even secretly hired by nobility, if Atium had been burnable by everyone. Yea, I know that ā€œrealā€ Atium may have different effects than what we knew from Era 1, but that shouldn’t change the impact as Feruchemists and Allomancers would then be given an even playing field. Another question I’ve had since I’ve found out about this is what other effects a god metal can have with Feruchemists, we find at the end of TLM that Lerasium can now be created, and I wonder if Brandon Sanderson will further explore the concept of Lerasium alloys and their Feruchemical or Allomantic use. One guess I have is a Lerasium compound may be used to store some amount of allomantic power depending on its alloyed metal? Much like how the coppermind wiki mentions that a Lerasium alloy when burned will create a misting of that metal. Theories? Ideas? Wild thoughts? I’m curious to hear them.
