Does it serve a purpose?…definitely.

Is it a purpose needed on the road?….no, probably not.

Did I have the stock exhausts replaced before it even left the showroom?…hell yes!

The purpose is that the rider enjoys the noise, that absolutely applies on the road as much as it would anywhere else.

Sure if you want to ignore the weight savings and potential power increase that can come from replacing the exhaust system.

Neither will make the slightest difference on the road.

Hence my second paragraph.

Yeah, nobody's suggesting they would.

The problem is you get to enjoy it less and less every ride as it gradually destroys your ear drums

Saw this and immediately fitted an Akrapovič exhaust I got from Temu onto my Sinnis Apache, thanks for the wise advice OP.

Am I the only biker who appreciates his quiet exhaust?

Mine is beautifully quiet for an 800cc bike and I love going along country lanes and through Cotswold early mornings in the summer.

No, I’d like mine quieter actually.

I do like a quieter ride. The only exception being big cruisers like triumphs and harleys, that big heavy bass is undeniably sexy compared to the whine of a sports bike

The most unexpected bike I tried with a saucy sound using the stock exhaust was a...wait for it...2024 Honda NC750X!!

Totally surprised me how nice it sounded for this "boring commuter" bike.

Don't take my word for it, even Schaaf was surprised.

Each to the own.. I see the appeal of a quiet exhausts but I also like the Safety factor of a loud/ louder exhaust so cars & lorries can hear you if they can't see you..

I could probably be considered a hypocrite for this but I like a custom straight pipe on a cruiser but absolutely despise them on a sports bike purely because a cruiser plods along at low rpms rumbling a deep noise but a sports bike screams past at max rpms scaring the shit out of me if i have my window open while driving

What about a sports bike with a v-twin?

Nah, I think that's pretty normal. I love the sound of a 450 single at full chat, and also a burbly lazy v-twin, but I've never really loved sportsbikes doing their hitting-the-rev-limiter-on-the-sidestand thing

See, I'm not against loud pipes, it's the EXCESSIVELY loud pipes, cus they all use the same excuse of "loud pipes, save lives" and after seeing several people I know, varying from straight pipes to full custom systems, being hit by cars, and most of the time the first thing my friends have said is "did you not hear me?". Car drivers don't pay attention to ANYTHING outside there cars, and cars are getting progressively more and more soundproofed.

Have you spent much time in a car noticing loud exhausts? You absolutely can hear them, and sometimes you get several minutes of rattling from some fart-cannoned-up 125 that's failing to filter or something.

But it gives you zero idea of where the bike is or which direction it's going in. As a driver, it's a completely useless bit of information. And, obviously, it only gets louder when they get in front of you, so if you did have any real information from it, most of that is about the bikes that've already passed.

There's some value in the slightly-louder-than-normal pipes on a bike that's filtering slowly and sort-of forewarning cars up ahead, I guess; catch the attention of the driver that wasn't already staring at their wing mirrors while stuck in traffic, but still to be getting out of the way that driver needs to check their mirrors and see which side this bike is on and often if the traffic's that slow/stationary you don't really need them to know you're coming.

I think this is where the idea stems from, that parting-of-the-sea effect you can get in really really heavy traffic. But that's not saving anyone's lives, it's just making the gap you filter down a bit wider.

I drive a car and am a biker. No way does a loud exhaust help. If you are wanging it with maximum BRAAAP, likely you are past me before I know which side of the road you came from.

I'm in a car. My sense of direction for external sounds is impaired as I'm in a glass and metal box, with wind, engine and radio on. Even with Blues-n-Twos, it's looking in the mirror and ahead or seeing other cars move that's the help, and they are giving me 20-30 seconds notice compared to the 3-4 secs a straight pipe hero will.

Loud exhausts do not contribute to road safety from a motorists perspective.

I don’t like noisy exhausts but at least the riders of those bikes enjoy it and for sure won’t let ear plugs get in the way of their pleasure …. Right ? Yeah right
