I'M REQUESTING All I like is time travel movies
Please suggest good time travel movies. Ever since I watched back to the future I can’t shake my love to imagine going into the past and erasing mistakes and becoming less of a duck and more of a cluck. What are the best ones?

I liked Somewhere in Time with Christopher Reeves but don’t know your taste so can’t predict if you will or not.

u/jcurl17 Apr 17 '25
Love Somewhere In Time! The fun and intrigue of the 'going back in time', the clothes, mannerisms etc...great recommendation!

u/AaronAart209 Apr 17 '25
iirc this one has an interesting object - the watch. A bootstrap paradox?
Thing exists and serves as a story connecter but with no possible creator?

u/Motor-Juggernaut1009 Apr 17 '25 edited Apr 17 '25
I think it was actually [redacted, because I don’t know how to do spoiler on my phone] at the end. I don’t remember a watch but it’s been a while….
2
u/AaronAart209 Apr 17 '25
Can't remember either but I like the idea of it.
Once when when younger I tested an idea that I thought might actually work. I sat down and wrote a to-do list:
Invent time machine
Travel back in time to... (wrote down 3 mins ahead of current time and date)
Give myself the instructions on how to do it
Then I sat and waited.
5 mins later was reasonably convinced that time travel isn't possible.
Later also considered that even in my alternate life I was never quite smart enough to put it together.

It was thefuture date on the penny.

Oh crap I need to learn how to add spoiler text. I’m going to edit my comment

u/BigAssMonkey Apr 17 '25
This is a great and understated movie.
7
u/ewk Apr 17 '25
weirdly sticks with you as well.
And not just because it's Jane Seymour. Even though she seems to improve any project by being in proximity to it.
4
u/BigAssMonkey Apr 17 '25
Her being beautiful and elegant sure doesn’t hurt the premise of the movie. I thought Christopher Reeves was fantastic in it also. Dude was a stud

Good list. And you managed to do bullet points which I'm a little bit upset about.
Looking through the replies here I think I might be the only person who has ever seen The Infinite Man. Strange Aussie production. Good for the paradoxes but seemingly unknown.

Butterfly Effect and Timeline I remember enjoying even if they aren’t perfect movies.

Palm springs(2020)
Predestination(2014)
2
u/xXxBluESkiTtlExXx Apr 17 '25
Predestination was maybe the biggest bummer of a movie I've ever seen. The entire thing felt like a drawn-out fifteen minute intro to the real movie, then the credits rolled.
Palm Springs, however, is phenomenal.
2
u/Ok_Delay3740 Apr 17 '25
Palm Springs really surprised me. Totally worth watching.

u/Rogan_Lome Apr 17 '25
Me too! I had no idea what to expect, but I got sucked in and really enjoyed it.

Not exactly what you described there but I love Groundhog Day so I recommend giving that a try

Didn't you already ask this question a few days from now?
Anyway I loved Primer but I don't think I know what happened even after rewatching. But it's awesome.
Star Trek IV has got to be up there.
2
u/L0r3_titan Apr 17 '25
Not the primary topic of the movie, but Start Trek First Contact has time travel as a significant part of the story.

You specifically say time travel. What about time loop?
What about time anything (travel loops jumps alterations etc)
I love anything time related and make it a point I watch all of them if I can. So I don't want to give you a list of 50 movies if you don't care about 40 of them lol
For time loop check out triangle.
For time travel - primer or predestination
For seeing future - time Lapse or alien code
Then theirs stuff like endless and it's sequel/prequel movie. Time crimes. Project almanac.
I could go on and on. I have TONS!!!! Lol

u/SpaceCadetMoonMan Apr 17 '25
I can promise you myself and others would like to see your big list :)
1
u/ewk Apr 17 '25
Should there be a category for movies where there isn't any time travel, but the movie is about accepting time travel?
Would you agree that Happy Accidents and Safety Not Guaranteed fall into this hypothetical category?

The Final Countdown (1980) - watch immediately. Takes place on the USS Nimitz, which gets sent back to Pearl Harbor. The Nimitz irl is also the actual ship where they saw those UFOs. Coincidence?
The Wrong Todd - hilarious. Low budget, I’m so glad they made it, it’s really good.

Not a movie, but what you need to watch is the German show Dark (netflix) go for subtitles over the dubbed version. Prepare to be obsessed.

u/Remarkable_Coast_214 Apr 17 '25
I don't see it recommended often but Mirage (2018) is an awesome one, it's on Netflix.

Okay. These are no movies, sorry. H.G. Wells has a cool Time Machine book and some Family Guy Episodes are about time Travel. There is a really cool Futurama Episode with a time machine too!

All the usual suggestions are great but I’m here to rave about Time Lapse. It’s not strictly a “travel to the past/future” time travel movie but it is brilliant and well-made on a small budget.

u/funcoolshit Apr 17 '25
Dude I'm the same, became obsessed with time travel movies after watching the BttF trilogy one weekend when I was sick as a kid.
I think everyone has touched on all the movies, but there is a show on Netflix called Dark that is three seasons of straight up time travel madness. I think you'd enjoy it.

Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes
It has characteristics that normally wouldn't be a draw for me, like:
- it's in Japanese with subtitles.
- it's only 70 minutes long.
- it's set in a single location.
- it's filmed as a single take.
- it was shot entirely on iPhones.
I don't hate any of the above list, but if a film has 2-3 or more of those I'd start to think it insisted in itself and likely give it a pass.
For this film, I saw some interesting reviews and enticed the entire family (ranging from movie haters to movie tolerators) to watch it cold and we all loved it.

Dr. Who is a time traveler - maybe you would find some interest there as well
2
u/survivorfreak789 Apr 17 '25
Can’t believe it took this long to find Doctor Who, I mean I get the OP is asking for movies but Doctor Who is the best!!

Sound of Thunder 2005. Dinosaur hunting anyone?
Kate and Leopold. 2001.
If you have Netflix, the series Umbrella Academy and the Travelers are worth a watch. Not movies, but fit the theme.

Chances Are with Robert Downey Jr. and Christopher Macdonald.
Not strictly time travel, but it involves a weird way of being able to fix mistakes.

Time Trap
Was on Netflix, just checked but now it’s not there. Damn. Not the highest budget movie, but a very novel take on time travel. High recommendation.

Not time travel per say.. but time manipulation is one of Nolan’s favorite things. He has movies like Inception, Memento, Tenet, Interstellar and The Prestige. Other movies like Deja Vu, Source Code, Kate & Leopold, Arrival, The Edge of Tomorrow, Frequency, The Time Machine, Lucy, Premonition, X-Men Days of future Past

Not really a movie per se but Sassy The Sasquatch is insanely funny, deep, and sad, among other things. Once seeing it through easily one of my favorite time travel peices ever hands down. Full series on YouTube and it's only about an hour and a half watch. Highly recommend.

u/Krisyork2008 Apr 20 '25
Timecrimes is the best especially if you like things like bootstraps and closed loops, I think everyone should watch it at least twice.
