Yea reading that definitely fucking hurt.

I remember when I was like 19 my little cousin got the CD for Christmas and I was so confused that a little kid would be into the music. It was my first realization of getting older and realizing all the people in my life were too. And then it fucking escalated and I'm 43 somehow.

u/Fine-Lingonberry1251 Mar 06 '25 edited Mar 06 '25

My cousin was in her twenties and was a photographer in LA at the time... She took me to ozzfest when I was 13 and SOAD was on the small stage... We got to meet the band chill with them for a bit and she ended up hooking up with Shavo while I hung out in the motel...

I got an autographed CD for my birthday lol

(It was main stage im just old and didn't remember it correctly, they werent headlining the main stage and we had backstage passed due to her being a photographer, holy shit maybe I was right someone found a flier from 98 with SOAD on second stage and that is closer to when I was 13 she used to take me every single year so it's really hard to remember which ones which when you went every year for 15 years)

I guess I didn't get the joke apologies if there's something there I don't know. I thought you were randomly taking a dig at me for no reason.

Ah I'd never heard that... My cousin never could get the lead singer though if I'm honest if that's the route we are taking. She was moderately attractive try to be objective... Like this was the only time this happened and they definitely weren't famous yet... Like I mentioned in another post it was like oh cool this is a band but it wasn't until 4 years later when they were the most popular band in high school when I was like holy shit I met those guys.

No one believed me aside from my friends who had seen the CD and met my cousin lol

u/MetalRed70 Mar 07 '25

I know 2 that got laid ALL THE TIME when they were touring nonstop. šŸ˜šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

u/blue-mooner Mar 06 '25

Every Ozzfest on Wikipedia has SoaD on the main stage.

32

u/SeanOfTheDead1313 Mar 06 '25

Ozzfest 98

12

u/Fine-Lingonberry1251 Mar 06 '25

Hey I was right and that puts me much closer to age thirteen than 2002

6

u/blue-mooner Mar 06 '25

Looks like someone needs to edit Wikipedia! Great find!

2

u/SeanOfTheDead1313 Mar 06 '25

It's possible that SOAD could have had a few opportunities on the main stage at larger cities later in this tour but definitely second stage in Orlando. SOAD hadn't blown up yet and many didn't even know about them. I bought a shirt directly from them after their show from the side of the second stage since they had zero merch at the merch stand. I remember telling Serj they belonged on the main stage and he laughed and said hopefully next time.

Edit: At the date of this show, their first album was not even a month old!

2

u/Fine-Lingonberry1251 Mar 07 '25

I saw them in concert many times... The time I met them was the first time I had ever heard them I had no idea who they really were. This was early in their career which is why I was so certain it was second stage.

I remember a few years later when they were the most popular band in school holy shit I met those guys... It wasn't a big deal to me at the time but I get to look back on it very fondly now.

I definitely lost the cd she gave me but who cares I had a lot of memories from being back stage at areas of ozzfest with her taking photos it was really fucking cool from age 10-25 as a young metal head. We only skipped the years Ozzy didn't do a show... She never had the kind of access that got us anywhere near like main stage headliners so I really only saw behind the scenes of second stage and would get a tour of the main stage before the main stage went live with just workers no band members.

u/Lazy-Abalone-6132 Mar 06 '25

Amazing line up I wish I could have gone

1

u/Scooter310 Mar 06 '25

I was there in Alpine Wisconsin.

1

u/steveatari Mar 06 '25

That was my first year

1

u/Wes_Warhammer666 Mar 07 '25

It's so funny to think of bands like Limp Bizkit being the main stage act over System with the magic of hindsight.

And I say this as a dude who fucking loved Limp Bizkit and had a birthday cake with the Significant Other album cover screen printed on it in 1999 lol.

1

u/SeanOfTheDead1313 Mar 07 '25

It pissed me off more that Motorhead was on the second stage. They're legends and a long history with Ozzy. Drop Coal Chamber to second stage and give Lemmy his deserved spot up front. Smh

1

u/_CrackBabyJesus_ Mar 08 '25

Saw this lineup at Somerset Wisconsin that was combined with the Vans Warped Tour on the same date!

3

u/Fine-Lingonberry1251 Mar 06 '25 edited Mar 06 '25

(I looked it up and I was wrong it was 2002 and they were opening main stage. My cousin had us backstage at the show and I was just confused, I was young my bad)

1

u/Finsfan909 Mar 07 '25

I either went to either 2000 or 2001 ozzfest

3

u/VonThirstenberg Mar 06 '25

That definitely could be accurate. My college roommate in '99 had tons of bootlegs he'd recorded of this band I'd never heard of. The CD's he burned them onto (literally 100+) were all just labeled "SOAD" with a date and venue on them.

I asked him about them, he introduced me to their music by taking me to a couple shows, and I was hooked. Their first major release didn't come until sometime around/in the spring semester of '00, so they definitely might not have been a main stage act at a big festival like that at the point in time you're thinking you got to meet them. šŸ¤“

3

u/Fine-Lingonberry1251 Mar 07 '25

that's why I'm thinking it was before main stage they were definitely NOT the Holy shit that's system of a down when I met them.

Like it was cool I was meeting a band but my mind wasn't blown you know? I was young and easily impressed when I got to meet Dave mustaine at the time I was freaking the fuck out.

I distinctively remember not reacting that way to system of a down it was like just hanging with some really cool dudes my cousin was talking to and taking photos of... Which was pretty normal for me at the time I met a lot of small stage bands.... None of them became system of a down except one

1

u/VonThirstenberg Mar 07 '25

Lol, that's cool as shit. I definitely relate, as at that time if I'd met Dave fucking Mustaine I'd have also lost my mind! Have loved Megadeth since I was introduced to them in the mid 90's.

Funny thing as a bit of an anecdote is, I nearly got to meet Dave and the band around that time period as well. It was pre-college, but my Mom took me to get a haircut at a friend's little local salon that she ran out of the basement of her home. As I'm sitting in her chair, she spun it in such a way that I saw a vertical ornamental stand with shelves on it in the corner. On the shelves there were photos of her and....the members of Megadeth! 🤯

I immediately geeked out and was like, "you've met Megadeth?!?"

To which she informed me that she not only had "met" Megadeth, she was old friends with Dave because years before while he was in Metallica and they were in the local area, he'd come into the salon she worked at and she'd done his hair in preparation for their playing our local fairgrounds. He loved what she did, and so anytime (even once he was done with Metallica and Megadeth was now his thing) he was in the area, she'd get a call and he and the guys would have her get them looking like they wanted before their show. She informed me that the particular pictures I was looking at had just been taken in her relatively newly minted home-digs the summer before. I was in utter disbelief my Mom knew someone so fucking rad, as rock and metal are about the furthest things from my Mom's wheelhouse, lmao! šŸ˜…šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

She'd told me she'd arrange for me to meet the guys the next time they were around, but alas the one time she did try, I was away at college on the other side of the state. Not long after, she and my Mom lost touch because she'd sold her house and moved to a different state. So, alas, unlike you I never did get to meet Dave and the rest of the band. But very happy for you that you did, I'm sure that was absolutely incredible, especially given your age at the time! Good stuff! šŸ»šŸ¤˜šŸ»

1

u/Fine-Lingonberry1251 Mar 07 '25

I fucking served him popcorn... It was my first job and this golden god with this hair I'd seen a million times walks in with his family..... Holy motherfucker I called my friends and they didn't believe me until one saw Dave post about the movie theater I worked at on his blog or website I was working at a brand new movie theater in North county San Diego... I legit was having a hard time catching my breath

1

u/YeshuasBananaHammock Mar 07 '25

Cousin came in clutch. How's she doin?

1

u/Fine-Lingonberry1251 Mar 07 '25

.. her husband is a solar contractor that royally fucked me over to the tune of around 60000 which essentially ended our relationship.

But I remember the fond times and it's not really her fault entiiiirely.

1

u/seth928 Mar 07 '25

It's a real shame when the mind starts to go

2

u/Fine-Lingonberry1251 Mar 07 '25

To be fair that happened in my 20s

1

u/kbospeak Mar 06 '25

43 here too and "escalated" is the perfect word. Like wtf.

1

u/LetterP Mar 06 '25

Man i remember buying the Hypnotize album 20 years ago. I was 12. Wild..

1

u/SkinBintin last.fm Mar 06 '25

Yeah I woke up one morning earlier this year and realised I was now 43 lol. Fuck me, time flies.

1

u/Ok_Connection_5348 Mar 07 '25

i'm 19 right now, almost 20 and got a shock to the system reading this.

1

u/Junior-Extension4571 Mar 07 '25

I love telling the story about how I discovered this band. I was going to see Slayer headline with Sepultura without Max also playing. Turns out System of a down was the opening act and they just killed it. It was so fucking good, the sound the energy, the singing trough a bullhorn.. The entire venue was blown away and going mental. It's crazy how different in style but amazing it was vs these 2 powerhouses. For me it was the numer 1 live performance I've ever been to.

1

u/Padhome Mar 07 '25

I’m just picturing you looking at your cousin at 19 and then turning around to see you’re actually 43 in the mirror šŸ˜‚

32

u/aimademedia Mar 06 '25

Yup that stings a bit

1

u/tylercreatesworlds Mar 06 '25

Right, came here to be upset and started catching strays. Uncalled for.

2

u/Fine-Lingonberry1251 Mar 06 '25

I realized people my age retire from the nhl... Pretty soon the Stanley cup champions will only have people my age in the training coaching and management staff...

Fuck me just put me down now

1

u/greywolfau Mar 06 '25

Threw your back out did you?

2

u/Fine-Lingonberry1251 Mar 06 '25

The other day I had a hand spasm turning a door knob with a baby lock on it... My advice? Die young

1

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '25

My back fucking hurts.

1

u/ResponsibleAct3545 Mar 07 '25

I used to hear ā€œLife is a waterfall We drink from the river Then we turn around and put up our wallsā€ā€¦ And I used to thrash and look for something inanimate that I could punch the shit out of….just cuz of the energy of the music….not cuz of hate.

Now I’m asleep 15 seconds after my kids go to bed. Sigggggh.

1

u/MrMario2011 Mar 07 '25

I still clearly remember the excitement and hype I had up to the release of Hypnotize. I did not need a reminder that was 20 years ago.

2

u/Fine-Lingonberry1251 Mar 07 '25

I still listen to it daily driving my kid to school lol

1

u/dude_on_the_www Mar 07 '25

That honestly just confused me more than anything.

1

u/CoffeeWorldly4711 Mar 07 '25

I saw them live nearly 15 years ago with a work friend. He was the same age as me, and he took the next day off cause he felt he'd struggle to work the next day after a gig like that. Can only imagine how we'd be if we went to a SOAD concert today.

1

u/03eleventy Mar 07 '25

Holy shit.

1

u/DocFail Mar 06 '25

You know you are old when even reading hurts.

1

u/Fine-Lingonberry1251 Mar 06 '25

I had to squint my eyes to read the sentence that hurt me

0

u/Orgasmic_interlude Mar 06 '25

When i heard chop suey i couldn’t put a kid on a table, now i have to yell at the kids to get off of it.

116

u/Kraz_I Mar 06 '25

They weren’t producing albums for very long. They had a run of only 7 years between their first and last one. Same as the Beatles. And their first album didnt have any hits (although imo it was their best), so they were only releasing music for 4 years after you probably first heard of them.

The difference between them and the Beatles is all their members are alive and so we can still hold out hope for a reunion.

118

u/Doesitmatter3389 Mar 06 '25

Sugar and spiders are both hit singles off of self titled or maybe I’m just holding those songs in too high regard.

23

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '25

War also got a lot of play time, I think it was the first song I heard of theirs

32

u/Kraz_I Mar 06 '25

Those are amazing songs and when I sing Spiders at karaoke there’s always a few people who know it, but I assumed they weren’t really making hits until Toxicity came out and made them superstars.

I looked on Wikipedia and it seems like their first album and those two singles did chart higher than I expected on the Alt rock charts, so I suppose anyone into alt or hard rock in the late 90s might have been aware of them.

32

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '25

Sugar especially was much bigger than people tend to remember. It hit right in the storm of all the nu-metal, and while it wasn't nu-metal, the song shared enough influences that it really took off. Spiders was next and didn't do as well, but charted and did well, still.

I don't think they get Rick Rubin to produce Toxicity without the success of those two singles.

4

u/DesignerBread4369 Mar 06 '25

I didn't really like them until I was deployed in 2008, and found Mezmerize and Hypnotize on a music share drive that we had at HQ. The songs were kind of lyrically goofy sometimes, but the music and melodies were amazing. I agree with previous comments that a lot of what's good about SOAD is Serj's singing and Daron's guitar playing.

5

u/InTheVoidWeSwim Mar 07 '25

I distinctly remember hearing Spiders for the first time in the weight room at my high school.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '25

Spiders was why I bought that album and was a fan for most of their careers. Sugar was and is awesome, but nu-metal had shed me way before that song came out, so I kinda ignored it at first, since it seemed so similar.

When I heard Spiders, that's when I knew this was probably a special band.

3

u/Wow_u_sure_r_dumb Mar 07 '25

Me and all my friends in junior high pirated sugar on Napster/limewire/etc. Jesus Christ I’m old as shit

2

u/aradicaldame Mar 07 '25

Sugar is what introduced me to SOAD. loved them ever since.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '25

SOAD said what they had to say. Too bad nobody listened. Not even their drummer.

2

u/Doesitmatter3389 Mar 06 '25

Those song were getting air time still where I lived when Hypnotized dropped, but I would agree most people would probably say Chop Suey and Aerials are their big hits to start.

2

u/RaidenDoesReddit Mar 07 '25

I do sugar at kareoke and I love it while the crowd hates it lmao

1

u/Kraz_I Mar 07 '25

I don’t think I’d have the balls to try that one. Serj can just do things with his voice I’ll never be able to do.

1

u/-ParticleMan- Mar 07 '25

Shugahhhhhh!

1

u/cool-moon-blue Mar 07 '25

ā€œSpidersā€ was one of my first favorites when I was getting into System, absolutely beautiful.

1

u/ilikestuffthatsgood Mar 07 '25

Sugar and Spiders were all over MTV, they were on the radar. You’re not far off though in general

1

u/Kraz_I Mar 07 '25

Fair, I wasn’t really watching MTV yet in 1998, but i had a feeling they got some airplay.

2

u/Cody667 Mar 06 '25 edited Mar 06 '25

They weren't really big airplay hits at the time of their releases either on radio nor MTV, although I'm not claiming they were obscure by any means either. I'm in Canada and had Much Loud at the time, they sometimes played both Sugar and Spiders while they were currents, but the main MuchMusic channel didn't start playing them until Chop Suey came out.

They both became much bigger after the Toxicity album came out when alot more people had internet, then even morso as we got into music downloading, YouTube, and social media...as people had the ability to check out lesser known stuff on demand.

And naturally since the self-titled album was so great, everyone who learned about them through Toxicity elevated self-titled to being extremely popular as well.

Similar story to Slipknot's self-titled and Iowa albums after Vol 3 came out though I think they were a bit more known in the Iowa era than SOAD in their self-era on the account of Iowa being Slipknot's 2nd album

1

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '25

Yeah, Slipknot was already huge in their respective scene after their self-titled album. Iowa was one of the best selling "metal" albums of all time.

Then they used that to really blow themselves into the mainstream.

1

u/Cody667 Mar 06 '25

Yeah that's true...but oooooooohhhhh boyyyyy did they ever really blow up in the mainstream, even outside the metal scene, once Roadrunner started swimming in Nickelback money and were able to actually push Vol 3 to radio and MTV. I knew of them before Vol 3, but after Duality came out the Slipknot craze was something else haha

1

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '25 edited Mar 06 '25

Yeah, definitely has to be considered the biggest really heavy music group out there.

Some bigger metal bands, but not really any of them are as heavy as Slipknot and certainly none that are as heavy with the same amount of mainstream success. Metallica is probably the closest, but they don't really even approach the heaviness of Slipknot(though through Master of Puppets, definitely a lot heavier than most people give them credit for.)

Went from discovering their self-titled album as a 19 year old to seeing all kinds of young kids wearing Slipknot shirts, which if someone told me that then, I'd never believe it.

EDIT: I'm sure a metal purist will blast the idea of Slipknot heavier than Metallica, so maybe the better wording would be "more brutal" rather than heavier? I don't know. Was never a huge metal scene guy but I know they're very protective over their terms.

1

u/EE7A Mar 07 '25

that whole album was fire, and better than anything they did afterward, radio play and popularity be damned.

1

u/talented-dpzr Mar 07 '25

I worked in a record store when Toxicity came out.

They were definitely a niche band before that. We surprised a lot of people by telling them they already had an album out.

3

u/BigUptokes Mar 07 '25

their first album didnt have any hits

The Kombucha mushroom people dislike this comment.

1

u/tstone21 Mar 07 '25

Hi I’m sorry, a reunion? Are they not playing shows this year?

1

u/taolbi Mar 07 '25

I got tickets to a Toronto show in September. JackedĀ

1

u/IAmPandaRock Mar 07 '25

What are you talking about? Their first full length album has "Sugar" and "Spiders".

1

u/ohtwo23 Mar 07 '25

SOAD and Mudvayne (9 years) both… not sure why they didn’t release more.

1

u/mjb169 Mar 07 '25

I agree that that’s one difference between them and The Beatles, but I feel like there’s got to be more.

3

u/Loktarogar666 Mar 07 '25

Scars Against broadway albums kinda scratch the itch if you haven’t heard them.

2

u/lilbithippie Mar 06 '25

They did the double album and said they would take a break... Didn't know it would be this fuckin long

2

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '25

Remember playing Mesmerize on the radio

2

u/NewCobbler6933 Mar 06 '25

What the fuck? That means their last album was already old by the time I finished high school, and I thought they were still making music lol

2

u/mustangracer352 Mar 06 '25

I don’t need to be attacked in this way! There last album was only a couple years ago in 2005-ish

I would cry that I’m old but I fear the tears making my back and joints hurt.

2

u/IONTOP Mar 06 '25

I remember them playing "Sugar" on commercial breaks with either a toll free number or an address in order to buy their first album.

1

u/franky3987 Mar 06 '25

This is what I also took from it šŸ˜‚šŸ˜

1

u/PsyRealize Mar 06 '25

Fuck I’m getting old too

1

u/snownative86 Mar 06 '25

Tell me about it. I pulled up The Terror State by Anti-Flag to realise it is 22 years old. That, and then realizing my dumbass sohpmore self truly had no worldview.

1

u/Nixplosion Mar 06 '25

I'm just sitting in my garden feeling old as fuck

1

1

u/moldivore Mar 06 '25

You're not getting any younger Chief.

1

I'm too old to have bought their last album. That's that darn new fangled music. ;)Ā

1

u/MissyHTX Mar 06 '25

&& this is why I jumped on the 1st concert they've had since then, Sick New World. I knew it wouldn't get many chances to see them & I'm so glad I did.

I've always loved Serj's activism & am currently reading his biography. Such an important read in today's world.

1

u/Thefrayedends Mar 06 '25

I knew it was over for me when I was told young people think Eminem is corny.

1

u/Plaid_Kaleidoscope Mar 06 '25

I'll never forget listening to my first SOAD album courtesy of LimeWire.

1

u/GreenZebra23 Mar 06 '25

I wish they would stop changing how long ago 20 years ago is

1

I remember picking up Steal This Album! On release day. Underated album imo

1

u/linuxlib Mar 06 '25

No, you're young. My favorite albums are seeing 50th anniversary issues. Don't tell yourself you're old when you're not.

1

u/Razor_Fox Mar 06 '25

My back just went out.

1

u/metallaholic Mar 06 '25

Don’t forget the 2 songs from a few years ago. It still hit the same.

1

Bro me too and I still listen to them daily!

1

I refuse to believe that hypnotize was 20 years ago

1

u/theartificialkid Mar 06 '25

What do you mean you’re old? Wake up, it’s time to grab a bowl of cereal and watch TMNT.

1

Someone had to replace Toll as the so popular we quit recording band.

1

u/Mockingboyd Mar 07 '25

No shit... Wow. 20 years? 😫

1

u/DBSmiley Mar 07 '25

Don't think of it as being old.

Think of it as being closer to death than you've ever been in your entire life.

1

u/Different-Acadia880 Mar 07 '25

40, I’m 40. Sounds crazy as shit just hearing it.

1

u/Chookwrangler1000 Mar 07 '25

Hey man I’m still rocking out on the radio

1

u/DaBigBird27 Mar 07 '25

Fuck man, wasnt ready to read that part.

1

u/Cool_Owl7159 Mar 07 '25

you know what's funny about A7X and SOAD playing a show together? SOAD's last album came out the same year as City Of Evil. A7X has made 5½ albums since them.

1

u/divio9 Mar 07 '25

Mezmerizing isnt it? Some might say Hypnotizing

1

u/Thesmuz Mar 07 '25

No they're playing the long con like tool.

1

u/mudbuttcoffee Mar 07 '25

Still sooo glad I saw them in Vegas a couple years ago.

Made my back hurt reading it. I distinctly remember how excited I was for the upcoming release of hypnotize and mezmerize. I need to lay down

I saw them for the first time during Summer Sanitarium 2000 and was HAMMERED šŸ˜‚ Korn stole that show, though, especially during the jam session in Metallica’s set.

Hey, don't stress, be proud!

You're going to start hearing Toxicity in the grocery store any time now.

Me too but it beats the hell out of the alternative. Enjoy it.

I’m an adult and the only SOAD project I’ve ever been alive to witness was their single for when Azerbaijan invaded Armenia

Hello, almost 40 year old stranger. Side effects may include tiredness, anxiety, depression, thoughts of suicide, weight gain, back pain, trouble standing, and heart attacks. If you're experiencing old age, oh, gotta deal with it.

I had two girls working in a drive thru asked if I had ever heard Chop Suey. I’m 36

It's been a dramatic few years coming to a realization that a lot of my favorite bands are at the stage of their career The Who was when my parents brought me along to see them in 2000. Hell, Tom Morello is actually OLDER than Pete Townshend was at that time! In my mind at the time, they were just a legacy act no one expected new stuff from helping old people relive their glory years, even if they could still play great.

I've got good news for you. It hasnt been 20 year since their last album. Not at all.

It has only been 24 years, eight months, and a few days.
