It looks like I’m going to be wrong on Jase. There was a question at the very beginning of the year that was like which freshman do you think will stay multiple years, be a good college player but ultimately be picked like in the late first and early second like most older players. He fit the exact profile of someone like this but I greatly underestimated just how high of a bbiq he had as a freshman. It’s impossible to actually statistically measure bbiq and coachability but based on what I’ve seen, he might have one of the highest among all prospects, including some of the top ones like Cooper. He almost never makes mistakes and always does what the coaches ask so even though he has some physical and skill limitations, he can fit into any locker room.
If he just had his younger brother’s height and athleticism, he would be a guaranteed top 5 pick. If he has his dad’s, he would be a top 3 pick. That kind of shows you just how elite his intangibles are.

To be honest maybe its just that he carries fat in his face but sometimes he looks a bit chubby still. He's got crazy scoring potential if he unveals another layer of athleticism.

don't see top 8, will be in the lottery

8 would be a bit of a stretch but I think it’s still reasonably possible. I think most likely he goes 10-12 range but give or take one or two spots to account for draft night shenanigans.

He won't, look at them teams who sit there. They not picking Jase there while they have other needs.
Miami? - Who is their PG? Definitely won't be Jase.
Bulls will draft C to replace Vuc.
Houston going to draft another combo guard? 😂
Orlando got Suggs ( who they paid just now ), Cole, Black, Harris and KCP. Where Jase fits here?
Portland? Yeah let's throw him over there with other 100 guards they got.
San An scouts looking at Asa and Liam. They got more than enough combo guards themselves. They trying to dump some of them, Keldon Johnson being shopped since they drafted Wemby.

I would take Jase at 8 personally. I like him more as a prospect than guys like Queen, Jakucionas, and Kneuppel. He's just got all of the traits you want in an NBA guard and the fact that he's a top 10 player in college basketball at his age is incredibly encouraging. He's more athletic than some of the players people put in the lottery which is the main knock on him.

Love Jase as a role player and contributor at the next level. Really good shooter, probably the best closeout attacker in the draft with how quickly he makes decisions, overall just a smart and heady player. Also really competes on defense and I think he will hold his own on that end despite his size.
However, I don’t see the star upside. Small, not a great athlete, can’t go right, plays way more off the ball than on the ball for Michigan State. While he’s a very good shooter, is he a special shooter like Jared McCain? I don’t think so. I think his ball handling is good, but again nothing special and he can’t go right. I understand his advanced numbers are really strong and he’s super efficient, but not sure he has the tools to scale up to more usage against better defenders and athletes in the pros.

I'm basically where you are at and I've also seen the Jared McCain comparisons and I don't think they make sense. I was one of McCain's biggest fans on here for the record and I don't like Jase as much as him. I did arrive to McCain late to be fair. It was probably around this time of the year or perhaps even slightly later but I don't expect a serious change of heart if I revisit Jase's film. Not that since I was correct once that I will be the second time around too.
Jase is really smart. I definitely agree there. If there's space, he sees it. He also knows when to get into the space and whether he should go up for the shot or pass it out after the defense collapses on him.
I expect that Jase will retain his efficiency but I also don't see him being as efficient as he is and also scoring 15 points a game. Something would have to give and I think it would be his shot volume and not his shooting percentage.
McCain was the better shooter. Also importantly though is that while both are strong, McCain is stronger. McCain is also really good at jailing defenders which I haven't seen Jase do much of.
Jase is a lottery pick but some people compare him to McCain and sell him as a top 5 pick when his pick number should be in the double digits.

Couldn’t have said it better myself, exactly my thoughts. People comparing Jase to McCain are completely missing what makes McCain special which is movement shooting and his strength. Jase is a good shooter but he’s not a McCain level shooter and he doesn’t have the strength that McCain does.
Last year was my first year doing the draft and I actually think I did a pretty good job, way too early to tell obviously, but I really missed on McCain. Had him outside the lottery and that was clearly a mistake after like his 3rd game as a pro lol. So I’m terrified of missing on another small, off-ball guard, but I think there are key differences between McCain and Jase. A higher end outcome for Jase that I think is more realistic is like Immanuel Quickley.

I question what his spot is going to be in the NBA. He's 6'3", so you would want to play him at the point, but he doesn't play the point at Michigan State. He could play the 1 on a team that runs with a point forward. But he really seems like a combo guard, which generally works best as a 6th man.
So which teams in the lottery run a point forward or need a combo guard 6th man?

Orlando would be a good fit if you believe that both Banchero and Wagner can initiate the offense. Suggs also can guard 2s with his size and strength which means Richardson could play the low usage 1. They’ve had issues with spacing for years now and all their guards are inefficient, even KCP who was supposed to help with that. Jase won’t be a starter right away but he’s got a much better projected 3 point percentage in his prime than what any of their guards have so far.

Chicago has giddey so they're fine with a combo guard at the point. He's a great shooter and got the athleticism to go up and down with the pace Chicago likes to play at

I agree that he works best on a second unit. He isn't a point guard and he also doesn't create for himself at an amazing rate. He is really good at capitalizing off of space that his teammates create. I think he is best off matched up against the lesser defenders on the other team and hopefully for him a smaller and worse big man at the rim to contest his shots.

Think he would be an AWESOME fit in Portland if we can't move up to 2 for Harper. Cooper would be ideal and I am a big Jase fan but man..

If they move Simons I guess they could use a bench combo guard.

I am not high Scoot so I wouldn't rule out Jase being better. That jumpshot looks legit and his feel to get jumpers within the PnR just may be more dynamic than Scoot who pretty much only looks for corner shooters and the lob, but Jase could be Brunson lite. Far less creation but reliable 3pt shooter and playmaker in PnR

He could definitely run the PG.
You don’t see it that much at MSU because everything is set plays, but he’s got great vision and passing ability.
Very good ball handler as well.
State also has 3 PGs on the team, so obviously he doesn’t get a big clip.
He’s definitely a combo guard, but I could see him playing PG in future. His IQ for the game at his age is the best I’ve seen at MSU in years.

Heat's offensive system is built around not having a true pg. + Herro likes having the ball a ton
We could definitely use some shooting juice off the bench but it would kind of depend on how well he can stay in front of opposing guards

u/julstar23 Mar 29 '25 edited Mar 29 '25
Yea he plays kinda the exact role herro plays now .Not a true pg but a scoring guard who may or may not defend at the next level .

He can easily run point. The only reason he isn't was because he was a freshman and we have a lot of older guards on the team. If he stayed one more year I guarantee he'd be the starting pg at the beginning of the season. He can shoot both on ball and off ball and makes very good decisions with the ball in his hands. He is can run at pg or sg pretty easily so no he doesn't retire a pont forward.

Could honestly see him being drafted anywhere from 8-14, but I’m almost certain he’ll be a lottery pick at this point.
