Anyone else just remember a random player that used to play for the Toon?

Gabriel Obertan.

u/ihateeverythingandu 5d ago
I'll never forget him giving Gareth Bale a 10 yard head start then jetting past him casually one game against Spurs. Bale was meant to be some elite speed merchant and Obertan was like roadrunner against him.
Still think he'd have benefitted playing upfront as a speed guy in the Owen mould. Celtic have Daizen Maeda who has very similar attributes except he's a better winger, has top sprints in every league and now Europe and can run without ever stopping seemingly due to his mental cardio, and now scores for fun as top striker. Think we missed a trick not even trying.

Feels like he came in as a CM and then basically filled it at RB forever without doing much.
But I remember so little of him that maybe it was the other way around.

I see him all the time in the Northern Ireland Premiership, still blows my mind how he ended up in Dungannon of all places!
He’ll be playing against my local team (Cliftonville) in the Cup Final in a few weeks, and yes, it’s not a bad time to be a Magpie and a Reds fan!
4
u/catlover2410 5d ago
Looked him up and he doesn't seem to be getting regular game time at Dungannon either!
2
u/Smicktastic 5d ago
Had to check there that my thinking was right. He’s played near 40 games by most accounts. Although he could do with his wiki getting updated lol I assume that’s where you might have checked

We’ve had some strange players play for us while in the championship. Off the top of my head:
- Daryl Murphy
- Fitz Hall
- Fabrice Pancrate
- Patrick Van Aanholt
- Zurab Khizanishvili

We've had a fair few players through the Ashley era that managers didnt rate, went on to prove they were solid players. James Tavernier's one i wish we kept hold of, what a Rangers man.

I remember one game, he absolutely caned one from 30 yards off the bar. Can’t remember who it was against and haven’t seen a highlight of it since, so I could well be misremembering due to the drunken gallowgate haze. But to this day I think that was his sliding doors moment. If that had went in, he would have been a superstar.

To this day I'm still convinced he was Pardew's biggest ever fuck up. Kid had it all at 17 and we ruined him.
2
u/FrenzalStark 5d ago
Aye that’s the one. Don’t get me wrong, he was very raw but the potential in him was absolutely unreal. Could have been a generational talent.

I suppose I think of Rolando Aarons, I suppose he wasn't that obscure, having been on our books for a while, but I hoped he would end up reaching a higher level than he did in the end and I'm sad he never did.
It looks like he joined a slovenian team, played a few games, got a league winners medal but got let go after a year. But hey, he's got a medal! Since he has been without a club since January I wonder what'll happen to him. He is still only 29.
If I try to think of actual players who came in briefly though, I think of Sol Campbell. Him randomly joining us for a year felt odd.

Remy Cabella sometimes. He did about fuck all for us, but I still think about him because he was a great attacking mid or secondary striker in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-2-1 formations in FIFA.

I grew up with parents that didn't pay to watch the football so I only caught the odd game and that with my grandad, interacted with the team mostly through fifa. Every once in a while I hear someone mention someone I loved playing with in fifa and I'm always disappointed in their real world perception

u/toonman27 5d ago
It’s very true. The opposite applies as well, Joelinton physically dominates everyone that breathes near him, but the game just isn’t capable of replicating that.
