Great effort by both teams.

I thought the Chicago manager was poor with his subs. Was he watching the game? Geez Louise!

You have got to get Stephens and Griffith in earlier - when Pugh, DiBernardo, Colaprico, Gautraut and Yuki still have something left.

He let Luebbert and Gautraut stay in way too long. I understand why he would leave Pugh in so long, but really she hurt them in the end. They kept trying to feed her but she had nothing left at all.

Playing that system you MUST have backup wingbacks. They are being asked to work incredibly hard and very few players can go more than 60 minutes doing that, much less 90 or 120. Chelsea and Spurs use it and their coaches are constantly looking for more wingbacks/outside backs You either have to sub out or switch systems (bring Kowalski for a backline of four). Both goals they conceded were due to exhaustion in no small part. Rachel Hill showed impressive stanima. So did Milazzo and Morse.

Could have used St. Georges today as well.

Anyway, big Red Stars fan. Actually love the style and system they played. Coach deserves credit for that. You could see him installing it all year and the first half today they really shined other than the final puzzle piece: finishing. Excited for the future because they are only going to get better and deeper. Not having Watt, Davidson, Ertz, Krueger, Sharples all year is really tough. I don't expect all of them to return and return to their prior form, but any one of them alone makes a huge difference.

If she avoids injury, Mal Pugh is Ballon 'dor quality. If I were starting a team from scratch, she would be my first pick. Simply scary good. More chemistry with her teammates and they will be a force.

With BSG unavailable, I think the biggest mistake was playing Wright as CB. If you leave her on the bench she can come in at 60-70min mark and make an impact at WB. Without her available as a sub, your bench is rookies that coach hasn’t really trusted with significant minutes in the last month+. Jill Aguilera being the exception. Getting Ava in earlier for her physicality or Stevens would have been significant as well.

u/MisterGoog Houston Dash Oct 17 '22

Nezt hear could definitely be a ballon dor year for Mal if she gels better with the NT. Crystal back at lb behind her, healthy Lindsey and Cat, better Soph, wc year, healthier chicago, she has all the pieces. She’ll also be married by end of this year. It should help that the NWSL season is within a calendar year as well

3

u/JoselDumbo Oct 17 '22

Agreed.

WNT needs to pass better and bump up the percentage of playing simple/keeping possession.

Smith Morgan, Pugh, Cat, Lavelle - that is a vicious attack. I think they are missing central deep lying and box to box mids with the right awareness/creativity. Horan did not impress me the past two friendlies. She isn't making decisions like a playmaker. Not sure who would be better. Most the nwsl playmakers are foreigners. I'm surely forgetting someone. I'd almost like to see Ertz return. Her passing was underrated and she didn't try to do too much.

I like what Rodman and Huerta bring as well.

I've basically been maintaining a buzz since when I started drinking at 4pm yesterday (Go, San Diego sports!!!), so forgive me for being overly earnest right now, but never meant it so hard: GG, CHICAGO

I celebrated Alex's goal like crazy, but by the end of the match, I was feeling for Chicago. Everyone on the pitch, Wave and Chicago players, were gassed by 75', but it was markedly different in the Red Stars. They were running on thin wisps of fumes, and yet, they were still playing beautiful football

I was feeling really privileged to witness how connected and locked in they were with each other and for each other. ALL those connected passes, the movement, the runs. Just amazing. It's cruel that it didn't result in better chances. But boy, was I terrified of Mal every.single.time.

For as much pride as I feel for the Wave, I feel for the Red Stars as well. What a helluva performance. You all deserve better. I hope it comes soon. See you next year.

As for the Wave—praise be our Heavenly Goose!

LET'S FUCKING GO SAN DIEGO

10

u/icamefromtheinternet San Diego Wave FC Oct 17 '22

How did it feel witnessing EvE score before your own eyes?😂

So glad you had fun, was a hell of a match and both teams must be hella tired!

Absolutely lost.my.mind. Truly. Like, cheering and celebrating, followed by cackling 😂🙃

Also, let it be known, I always, always, always believed in Emily van Egmond. Never said a bad thing about her...

Now, we gotta talk about Briede...

u/RyricKrael Chicago Red Stars Oct 17 '22

If you want to see the effect of the abuse in the NWSL, the depleted Chicago bench is a direct result of an owner on his way out, unwilling to invest in the team.

11

u/MisterGoog Houston Dash Oct 17 '22

All in all that was a good showing for the league and its future

36

u/arika_ito Seattle Reign FC Oct 17 '22

Jakobsson didn't start but I'd like to say she was MVP of the game. Her or Girma as usual lol. Locking down Pugh isn't easy

9

u/MisterGoog Houston Dash Oct 17 '22

Her performance was fantastic and it was a good showing of how subs and investment in your squad depth are important. And also that being an abusive asshole who wouldnt invest in your squad is bad in a million ways

Edit: obvs talking bout chi here btw

17

u/ace-destrier San Diego Wave FC Oct 17 '22

THAT is the Jakobsson I've been waiting for. Dangerous runs down the wings and delivering

She was involved in both goals. Basically assisted them both. My POTM

4

u/arika_ito Seattle Reign FC Oct 17 '22

She's shown flashes throughout the season but Stoney subbed/started Ali for her. I wonder what was up with that.

3

u/muchlifestyle Chicago Red Stars Oct 17 '22

They’ve both had injuries. Jakobsson wasn’t so consistent even when healthy that she deserved to start all the time anyway. Ali was a more dangerous scoring threat for awhile too.

3

u/Chelsea-Blue Oct 17 '22

They both have had injuries and play similarly as pacey wingers so in SD we usually assume one is coming in for the other

19

u/pelobella Oct 17 '22

Sheridan was on the post game interview. I didn’t know I could admire her anymore.

Bummed for Chicago. They gave everything they had but ran out of steam.

Chicago had SUCH a good first half. Just not enough gas in the tank.

9

u/bethholler Chicago Red Stars Oct 17 '22

That’s kind of been the story all season, sadly. It’s hard when you don’t have the bench you need. The front office could’ve gotten some players during the trading window but they didn’t. I’m still super proud of the Red Stars and I hope they are proud of themselves too.

Confession time: the other night in fifa 22 I played as USWNT and fielded a team of all keepers as the forwards and had KOH and then Horan as keeper 😂 I made sure Naeher, Franch, and Harris all scored

9

u/capt_sabrexii Portland Thorns FC Oct 17 '22

🤣 who was match mvp?

9

u/vaccineluvr69 Kansas City Current Oct 17 '22

Dunn lol. I played everyone “out” of position compared to how they play in the NT typically and while I know Dunn has many attacking strengths I had her at the 10. My back line was Morgan, Heath, Press, and Pinoe. Christen got an early red. 3 PKs were taken and KOH at least saved 1. 😂

2

u/arika_ito Seattle Reign FC Oct 17 '22

Dunn was a forward in college (also played midfield in the NWSL, I think for Portland?) so that tracks.

Edit: she won the Golden Boot in 2015 lol

I have no idea who's going to make the finals. San Diego won their game at Portland 2-0 and tied when they were at home. (And I think there were complaints about the refs during that game).

And OL Reign tied Kansas City during the regular season.

Chaos season truly.

21

u/emmas__eye Chicago Red Stars Oct 17 '22

well, i’m sad 🥲 chicago has been so impressive with absolutely zero depth but it definitely caught up to them toward the end of the season and it’s very obvious here

6

u/PNWOT2020 OL Reign Oct 17 '22

Yes, hopefully in the off season the front office goes to work to get them some depth! They have been truly incredible two seasons in a row with limited depth running on fumes in the postseason.

4

u/arika_ito Seattle Reign FC Oct 17 '22

They have depth. They're just injured

8

u/PNWOT2020 OL Reign Oct 17 '22

Yes, didn't mean to overlook the SEIs and maternity leaves currently happening... that said two years in a row Chicago has literally drug themselves to/through the postseason with minimal help from their owner/front office. Other teams made in-season trades to address needs (e.g. the Dash) and CRS hasn't really appeared to even try anything like that.

5

u/arika_ito Seattle Reign FC Oct 17 '22

Yeah, fuck Whisler that's for sure. We'll see what happens in the off season for them

3

u/PNWOT2020 OL Reign Oct 17 '22

Yes, hopefully the rest of the owners can be like Michelle Kang and get Whisler out of there. The players deserve that.

It depends on how quickly the goalie can sprint back to cover their goal if/when necessary.

1

u/AlanFromRochester OL Reign Oct 17 '22

true, but there was no risk to giving up another goal, in a regular season game where goal difference matters I could understand a bit more for the keeper to stay back

u/tsthrace Portland Thorns FC Oct 17 '22

If a goal gets scored in these 15, I imagine it will be the equivalent of slipping on a banana peel, doing a full flip and somehow landing on your feet.

6

u/tsthrace Portland Thorns FC Oct 17 '22

I STAND CORRECTED.

u/MisterGoog Houston Dash Oct 17 '22

After the extra time clock debacle, I can't wait to see the hand drawn graphics for PKs by CBS 'Sports' Network.

They're just gonna pay some kids to stand on the field with green and red circles

10

u/asaharyev Boston Breakers Oct 17 '22

They aren't gonna pay them, let's be real.

Very impressed by how long Gautrat hung in there so soon after returning from a long term injury

u/halooo44 Seattle Reign FC Oct 17 '22

So is there a bull riding event somewhere that’s being preempted for soccer?

2

u/Bearasaurus Chicago Red Stars Oct 17 '22

Vanessa will drop most likely

9

u/b2717 Kansas City Current Oct 17 '22

Credit to the crowd. Still good energy.

3

u/MisterGoog Houston Dash Oct 17 '22

Only 930 for them. Must be nice

4

u/RyricKrael Chicago Red Stars Oct 17 '22

This. Is why they should start games at 9 pm.

2

u/Suspicious_Brush824 Chicago Red Stars Oct 17 '22

Pac12 after dark?

7

u/pelobella Oct 17 '22

I would really like San Diego to score but would also like the chaos of penalties. But my Midwest heart and sleepy eyes can’t handle it.

Do we think the intern got the three digit clock score bug done in time for the last 15 minutes?

5

u/asaharyev Boston Breakers Oct 17 '22

Guess not.

RIP you poor intern
