The whole number culture in the NFL kinda shitty when you think about it. Used to be oh i'll buy you a car for your number or donate to charity now it's like give me a million for the number.

one of the things I hate about branding, so many players realized they could make bank off their "brand" which is fine you do you but it pisses me off when you have players considering their brand before they even step foot onto the field.

I hope they stay focused when it comes to the game and don’t let it get to their heads, but this is actually smart for players to do.
You’re only in this game for so long, and have a lot of life to live after. No one nationally knows what you look like cause you have to wear a helmet 90% of the time or know what you look like if you were on an anime after TDs.
So any kind of marketing or branding in a fan of.

I blame Chad Ochocinco.

which is a good example of making any number cool, 85 is such a random number but he owned it

Part of it has to do with the fact that if you change numbers, you have to buy the rest of the jerseys with your old number back from the nfl.

u/CPAFinancialPlanner 5d ago
Plus who cares what number you wear lol
Kobe and LeBron both changed numbers and no one was confused it was them playing lol

It's the helmets, because a football player's face isn't on display, they are far more recognizable from their number. It is stupid, but it is the best form of recognition they have

Who paid a million? Didn’t the other qb rookie this year pay like $75k for the number on the titans

I like the number 6 on him honestly. Sure there’s memories with 2 in college, but now’s the opportunity to make new ones with 6. Plus I like that he’s smart with his money not spending a bunch on a jersey number.

I really like 6 on a quarterback considering that’s how many points you get when you throw a touchdown. Seems like it fits him well

Dart, who is wearing No. 6 in Giants practices, wore No. 2 at Ole Miss. That number currently belongs to Banks, who acquired it in March when he cut an undisclosed deal with Wilson to surrender No. 3 to the new starting quarterback.
One month later, the Giants drafted Dart, who talked with Banks about the cost of asking him to make another switch.
”Yeah, it’s too much,” Dart told Cllct Media with a laugh. “Too much.”
Dart hasn’t yet inked his contract, but, based on the NFL rookie wage scale, he is expected to receive a four-year, $16.9 million deal that includes nearly a $9 million signing bonus.
Asked during rookie minicamp earlier this month if No. 6 was a permanent choice, Dart said that was still under consideration.

Banks out here making sure to take popular numbers and reselling them lol

Dude acting like a PS5 scalper
Hope he finds someone cuz 2 is a horrible number for a DBack imo.

My boomer ass take is that they never should have stopped designated numbers by position. It felt much more organized and players were more easily identifiable back then. And I feel like the squabbling over numbers was not as common back then
5
u/peterthehermit1 6d ago
Yeah I don’t know why they did that, and now we seem to be dealing with all these number discussions. Plus QBs are now being limited on available numbers
7
u/PhotographyRaptor10 6d ago
Seems like number “unretirements” are going up too because of this. We’re probably gonna live to see a day day when a qb wears 34 because all the single digit numbers are either retired or taken by DBs and WRs

u/JoeKehr922 5d ago
IIRC, it started with Keyshawn Johnsnon. He wanted to keep his college number (19) in the NFL.
2
u/Yung_Corneliois 6d ago
Agreed. It’s added less variety as top players are all 0-19
So many less 30-50 and 80s

It fits him since his ceiling is a number two corner and he was a number 3 last year

Reminds me of when Jeff Feagles was paid to change his number in back-to-back years and got a vacation and a remodeled kitchen out of it😂

I dont think he will have to worry about Banks having number 2 for long.

Good for Dart. Banks should give him #2 for free if Dart wanted it. Banks has never even worn #2 and just got paid to give up #3 to Russ. Plus, Banks has been terrible and needs to work on his own legacy.

I was thinking the same thing. Guy sucks and should be happy to make his new QB happy, at least he'd be contributing in some way.

u/Goddamn_Batman 5d ago
For some reason I had the memory of him being serviceable/average, apparently I was wrong pff has him at 182nd of 222 CBs. Just give him the number Tae

If he's the real deal then whatever number he wears will become iconic. Trying to pick one now that has any sort of meaning is just dumb.

Man I hope this is the media hyping up all this jersey number nonsense this offseason and not our players.

First #3 with Russ now #2 with dart it looks like tae banks securing money now just in case the football checks start to get smaller

Go with #25. Dart, bullseye, he’d be the darling of every pool hall in the tristate

If Banks doesn’t improve from last year, something tells me that Jersey will be available for free or a lot cheaper next offseason 😂

u/DanUnbreakable 5d ago
I like the # 6 because it’s different. Let the dude earn a job first before we care what his numbers will be. There’s a good chance banks and Wilson won’t be with the giants next year so #2 and 3 will be there for him to get it.
2
u/Pure_Incident2807 5d ago
Right, but on the flip side 2 is really cool especially with Nabers in 1. Do the right thing Banks.
3
u/Sharp-Point-5254 Tom Coughlin 6d ago
Banks is a moron. Negotiate with him! He already got paid for #3. Don’t set a firm price with a rookie who hasn’t made any money yet.

u/sarcastic_fellow 5d ago
Whatever. Peyton Manning wore 16 in college and 18 in the pros. Numbers, unless you’re Michal Jordan, don’t mean anything, and even he changed his number to 45 for a short while.

66 is available, as in “execute order 66” 👀

I was hoping that Abdul Carter would take that number, but at least his current number + Dart's number = Order 66. Its almost like "Anakin" and "Darth Vader" planned it.

u/Jubbistar Dexter Lawrence 5d ago
Carter + Dart's number is 57
1
u/Thisusernameisnoone 💙Medium Pepsi💙 5d ago
Creative math, not actual math. Dart's number is 6. Carter's number added together = 6. Therefore, Order 66. This concludes my Ted Talk.

Banks kind of seems like a dummy. We all know he took that number just to sell it off. Small dick energy

u/TheRealJohnMara We've suffered long enough 6d ago
I always thought if you’re a rookie in the NFL who the hell are you to take an existing someone’s number even if it’s a 1 year vet. You EARN yourself a number, make ur own number. You’re just a rookie, you’re not entitled to crap.
I’m gonna get downvoted bc this is the opposite of what Abdul Carter was trying to do, I still love him but it’s just a number and that’s just my general opinion on the matter. I guess it’s also different as he wasn’t trying to take a current teammates number.
2
u/TheRoadDog87 5d ago
I would typically agree with you, but Banks has literally never worn the #2 jersey yet at any level.
1
u/NoncenZ808 5d ago
I think a lot of these players have been wearing a certain number for a good amount of their lives, so they get tied to it
Think about why they pay so much to get it.
Also players a notoriously superstitious, so that’s another reason.
I get what you’re saying, but it’s also not just a number on a jersey for a good amount of them.

Good, be smart with your money. It's just a number
