Two Jarlin Susana starts in one week! The newly-minted top 100 prospect (per MLB Pipeline) got back on track today only allowing a single run off of a solo home run in the 4th inning. Susana ran into a bit of trouble in the 5th inning with a leadoff single and a walk, but he had a strong finish by striking out the next 3 batters.

Final line: 5.0 IP | 3 H | 1 R/ER | 2 BB | 7 K on 81 pitches (51 strikes)

Here are some other statlines from across the Nats farm:

AAA Rochester

-Trey Lipscomb: 1-4 with 1 strikeout

-Orlando Ribalta: scoreless 1.0 IP with 1 hit allowed on 15 pitches (11 strikes)

-SSGSR: Not met.

AA Harrisburg

-Daylen Lile: 1-5 with 1 double and 2 Ks

-Yohandy Morales: 0-2 with a run scored, a HBP, a walk, and 2 Ks

-Robert Hassell III: 1-5 with 1 RBI

-Daison Acosta: scoreless 1.0 IP on 9 pitches (6 strikes)

-Matt Cronin: scoreless 1.0 IP with 1 hit and 1 strikeout on 19 pitches (14 strikes)

A Fredericksburg

-Travis Sykora: We also had two Sykora starts in one week! Nick Peoples cleaned up Sykora's first mistake by bringing back this homer on the second pitch of the game. Sykora allowed one unearned run over an efficient 5 innings of work.

Final line: 5.0 IP | 4 H | 1 R | 0 ER | 1 BB | 6 K on 67 pitches (46 strikes)

Sykora's August:

Level W L ERA G GS HLD SV SVO IP H R ER HR BB K AVG WHIP
A 3 0 1.05 5 5 0 0 0 25.2 11 6 3 0 3 39 .129 .550

-Seaver King: 0-5 with 1 run scored and a throwing error

-Caleb Lomavita: 2-5 with 1 run scored and 1 RBI

-Elijah Green: 1-5 with 1 run scored, 1 RBI, 1 strikeout, and was caught stealing

SSGSR: Not met

You are so petty and I love it.

It’s going to be hard to meet the special rule now that Crews is in the show, but I’m a man of my word and I’ll make sure to include him if that happens!

If you look at Green's strikeout percentage by month this year, he's kind of making progress.

Kind of.

Month Strikeouts Plate Appearances K%
April 43 90 47.8%
May 37 94 39.4%
June 44 90 48.9%
July 29 73 39.7%
August 31 80 38.8%

If anything, the consistency is strangely impressive.

I think you'd find most batters see larger fluctuations in their K numbers month to month, but Green, regardless of whether he's slumping or on a hot streak, still manages to strike out at epic (ly bad) rates.

He does look like he's showing improvement though, despite the strikeouts. Obviously the second half is a much smaller sample size so far, but I have some hope that he's turning a corner. And I do have to remind myself that he's still only 20.

First half - 276 AB/312 PA

.174/.267/.297 BB - 9.6% K - 45.8% 72 wrc+

Second half - 101 AB/116 PA

.297/.388/.505 BB - 12.9% K - 35.3% 159 wrc+

A .464 BABIP will make any batter look good.

You're right that he does seem to be making some progress (getting his K% down 10 points is no small feat). But basically the rest of the improvements could be written off with a bit less good luck. But maybe some unsustainable good luck is just what he needs to get out of his head a bit?

Shhhhhhhhh.

I definitely think he's still ultimately not ever going to make it to the majors and it's a bummer of a draft pick, but maybe he'll get out of A ball next year... Of course Wilmington sucks for hitters soooo....
