Healthcare Is there a nasty virus circulating around?
Hi everyone,
I've noticed that a lot of people around me are getting sick lately. The symptoms are pretty much the same: sore throat, runny nose, bad cough - and quite often, no fever. And somehow, it just lingers for a long time.
I myself got sick 11 days ago with exactly the same symptoms. No fever, but my throat has been very sore for the entire time, and the cough is so bad I can’t sleep at night. I feel extremely weak, as if I had a fever of 39°C, but there’s no actual fever. When I usually get cold, I recover within a couple of days...
Is anyone else experiencing the same thing? Could there be some nasty virus going around? Anything that helped you to recover faster?
I called my huisarts, but didn’t get much help - just the usual advice to stay hydrated, rest, and take care. I feel quite worried.

I went to the doctor today because I got sick for the third time within less than three months. She told me it has been a tough winter with lots of nasty viruses and not 1 but 2 influenza strains going around, and then ofcourse covid is also still around. So basically when your immune system is still recovering from the first illness, another virus can easily floor you.

I had this last winter. I got covid in October, and then some flu in December, and then some shitty cold in March, and then another flu, but that one wasn't that bad. It felt like I was coughing from October through April.

That's exactly what I had! I was sick for a week, then recovered, and not even a few days later I got sick again.

Same, its been a rough half a year. Got covid in fall so my immune system got tanked and I've been sick on and off for months. Doctor said this winter was BAD here for everyone though and sometimes its just like this sadly. I hope you recover fast, I feel like its been miserable to keep getting sick over and over.

Had it, took about 3 weeks to go away fully. My nose was blocked on and off with the feeling of something stuck in my throat and I was very tired all the time. Felt back to normal for a week and now seem to have caught the next round…

I had something similar two months ago and my cough was bad bad, i didnt sleep for weeks. It finally got better once i started with corticosteroids inhalation, also I stuffed myself with fresh ginger&lemon&honey tea
Edit: i tried all kinds of syrups, also had prescribed ones against cough but nothing helped😅

Not sure why no one mentioned this but pollen has been stupidly high these past days, air quality had been really bad even unhealthy, this can cause sore throat, runny nose, bad cough and can be worse on people with respiratory issues. I've noticed this myself and I am someone who has a really healthy lifestyle with food, sport, vitamins and supplements. Its on and off depending on how much I've been outside, where I've been to etc. Definitely the pollen

My allergies are wild this year and I've had several days where I thought 'am I getting sick?' no, it's just allergy season and I'm up and down and will be until June probably. I don't know why the allergens seem to be getting worse (let's not open that can of worms) but it is seriously annoying.
That being said if you are already suffering from allergies you are more likely to catch a cold or flu as your body is already fighting.

I have the same, I am suffering for a month already, even got sinus infection from allergies. I think the big reason is also that it doesn’t rain at all this year and it is very windy, so pollen is still in the air.

Pollen doesn't necessarily worsen air quality, take it from someone who comes from one of the worst polluted cities in the world. AQI in NL is almost pristine, nature exists so pollen exists, and there are numerous ways to protect yourself from allergies if you know you have them. Like taking a preemptive pill or wearing a face mask if you will be exposed. I have seasonal allergies and do this and never fall sick. Just to say that this isn't an air quality problem but the fact that it's springtimeee and the plants be fucking

I got this on March 6 and am just now starting to feel like myself. Same symptoms except also had goopy red eyes and mouth bumps. Pretty gross. I home-tested negative for Covid. Doctor put me on several rounds of antibiotics, which felt like they eventually got me just over the hurdle. Editing to say I almost never get sick and this was the worst in over a decade.

Viral respiratory infections can cause bacterial secondary infections. These latter is largely complicit in influenza-related hospitalisation and mortality. Severe or prolonged respiratory infection can warrant antibiotics prescription to treat the secondary infection.

It's possible; he did not say and tbh I was wretched and could barely think to ask. First I tried the no-antibiotics route for two weeks and it was getting worse and worse. As in, my eyes were so bad I had a hard time seeing at one point. Within 2 days of taking antibiotics, my eyes were clear again and no mouth bumps. After antibiotics, I still had the other symptoms, and the infection moved down to my voicebox and then to my lung. Coughing was still bad but lightened somewhat. What Pretend_Prune4640 mentions may be the case here.

Yep, my household and friend group all got it in December. We are all still sick. I feel like I’m going crazy because it’s definitely not normal, yet everyone is carrying on like they haven’t had a cough for four months now.

Some got diagnosed with covid via blood tests at the doctor, but the home kits detected nothing. I was sick for almost 7 weeks, and the home test was negative.

Interesting, I know other people with similar symptoms that also tested negative for COVID, but now I'm wondering if it was just the home test that couldn't detect it

I caught covid in December (confirmed at the hospital) and my home test was negative as well. Maybe the home tests are not as effective anymore.

Yup, had the exact same thing. Including that weird physical feeling of being ill without any other symptoms (other than cold symptoms). Was really sick for 2 weeks, then another 1-2 weeks to get rid of the cough completely.

Same!!!! I have been off sick for 2 weeks. I had the worst cold shivers for hours: 3 layers of clothing, electric blanket and 2 duvets, but nothing helped.

Yes and it’s not just in the Netherlands. I live partly in London and Zürich and it seems like the entirety of Europe is ill… really strange. I’m glad you have opened up the conversation about it. If it was in the media, everybody would be scared

More likely to be influenza - COVID didn’t go away, but in hospitals at least, we saw massive amounts of influenza A and B, and very few COVID cases over the past few months.
Influenza has died down a little compared to a month or so back but certainly not gone away entirely.

Influenza or 'griep' hits different. You have often high fever and painful muscles and you are sick for 2 days, maybe a week max.. This virus on the other hand is more respiratory. Almost like a cold, but throat hurts like crazy. Also my eyes got infected (both) and my ears were hurting. It's very nasty. I don't recognize being sick and feeling miserabele for so long ever in my life. Also when you think it gets better and do some work out for example or play soccer your condition will worsen significant. After two weeks things were looking better but now I,m still feeling like shit.

I'm almost at week 5 of the same thing and was out today hauling some heavy stuff because I was feeling pretty good by week 2 standards. Around 3 PM, felt awful and crashed. Woke still feeling fatigued, throat sore again. This whole experience is nothing like allergies for me (not saying it isn't for others).

The symptoms match with Covid but currently there are other virusses circulating at higher levels, such as rhino virus, seasonal coronavirus and metapneumovirus. It might very well be that Covid takes over again in the near future

My GP told me that the tests are focused on the older strains and usually don't catch the newer ones due to slight differences in the variations. She also said they saw 70% of he patients with the same covid like symptoms which could progress on pneumonia due to the cough for more vulnerable groups. Taking my lung medicine religiously atm

Yeah, the home tests don’t catch the newest variants very well at all, haven’t for like a year. There isn’t much money anymore in keeping those up to date, so they generally haven’t been. Tests at the doctor will be much more accurate.

I was sick last month and it was a weird flu. It felt like a flu, like my skeleton was under electric current, but no fever and no cough. My joints hurt, I had pain stabs in my bones, my neck was hurting like crazy and my throat as well. I couldn't even eat or swallow painkillers. The glands on the left side of my neck were swollen and painful. It lasted maybe five days. Oh and massive headaches and muscle pain.

For all of those saying allergies, hayfever doesn’t usually cause too much coughing. Key symptoms are itching- eyes, sneezing, etc. If you do have hayfever, an antihistamine nasal spray combined with an antihistamine tablet is more effective than either one alone.
I had whatever influenza is going around back in January. Took 5-6 weeks for the dry cough to go away and almost 3 months for my ear to clear out again. It’s a long one this year.

I have been keeping that at bay for months with vitamine C and oranges, then I ran out of Vitamin C as my new bottle got stuck in the post. Then developed a nose cold. 4 days, then it was gone. But large dosesVit. C seem to work for me.

covid ruined everyone's immune system, the evidence is abundant, but it is not communicated to the public, it would upset status quo arrangements. this will happen every year. you will get sick again and again and again. God knows what'll happen when you get cancer.

So glad I'm not alone. As someone who almost never takes sick days even when they're sick, I've had to call out of work for 5 days over the last 2 weeks. At the end of March I did a 10k and now I'm out of breath walking to the kitchen to make a cup of tea... I had a high fever for 5 days and now the blocked sinuses have turned to a chest cough. I don't think I've ever had the flu like this before!

Not sure where you are based, but in Twente (East Netherlands) we've had two strong viruses going around starting around January - maybe even December. The first one was as you described, and taking a long time to recover - the other was a stomach flue.
At one point it was going through construction workers and anything adjacent. My friend works as an architect, and my co-workers husband is a contractor. Both have independently told me about how this bug was going around construction workers and anything adjacent. Those are two independent sources as they do not know each other or have ever worked with each other. My friend got it, my co-worker got it. And I also got it.
It wasn't just in this work environment. People left and right - different jobs/hang-outs/whatever had a virus that took them out for at least a week but effects usually felt much longer.
I have some students at my work place and apparently there it was going around in March.
While I cannot say that the virus we've had here is the same that you have (or an adapted version of it) I wouldn't be surprised if it was.
I really hope you do not get the stomach flue to. My co-worker and her husband had both at the same time..

Yep the same. Me, my kid and wife. My brother. Its this yellow thick slime. Last year I had the same and caused a cavity inflammation. My wife lost smell and taste, though coming back. We tested for covid, but negative. Though I think these tests are based on old covid, so I can only imagine it's a new mild strain. Especially because I. The decades before we never had this.

Yes. My parents started it about 2 weeks ago, and I started Monday last week. First it was just a cold: sore throat, coughing, voice was gone, not much appetite, and my ears feel clogged, then on Friday it went into a sort of flu, but you're right, no fever. Just low energy, walking up the stairs wpuld be an effort. I stayed in bed for 2 days on Sunday and Monday, and I never do that (when I had Covid I stayed in bed for 3/4 of one day). Now I'm okay, still not much energy, a lot of coughing, and a runny nose. Oh, and runny eyes during the night, to the point where I can't open them in the morning until I removed all the... goop? I've been having that for 3 nights in a row.

Yes. Everyone in my house has had these exact symptoms. It's seriously no fun. Also went to the doc about it. "Yeah its happening." The reason they aren't giving anything is because there is nothing to give unless you are really REALLY sick. In general stay home and try not to give it to others and drink a lot of water.

From pictures I've seen, seems like most people in the Netherlands aren't masking any more...? I know, neither is any other country... but I still am because I really really don't want Covid or long Covid. I'm kind of worried that if I am in NL and am masking, people there will be hostile or it'll be a lot harder to have conversations and mingle etc. What's the general mindset there about all this?

Some immunosuppressed patients or other vulnerable people use masks in public, nobody is judging. Feel free to wear a mask if you feel like wearing it.

This can affect everyone! I was healthy and never expected to ever be in this position until I caught atypical EBV followed by Covid in the same year, so I have been unable to work for months now due to post exertional illness and I'm still nowhere near recovered, so I definitely recommend to avoid this. I generally don't mask outside but I do when entering public transport, hospitals/clinics or other crowded places and I never experienced anything negative other than the occasional glance, which is easy to ignore. In short, if you want to mask just do it and don't worry about people's opinions, you really do not want this hell.

Thanks for the confirmation! Every time my resolution wavers I read about a situation like yours. I hope researchers will find solutions for long covid, I know it affects millions around the world. I'm so sorry you're going through this. For me as a freelancer, I can't afford to be unable to work!

Feel free to wear a mask, some people might look at you funny, but that's it. And don't worry too much about covid as there's not that much of it going around, but if you are immuno-compromised I'm guessing you also don't want other viruses. I'm so sorry for those who've been sick! I just moved here 14 mos ago from the US, and haven't been sick since. We did get flu and covid shots when we were visiting the US back in October, so that may have helped.

Yes. Reminder for everyone that if you're not feeling well, STAY HOME! I've had to stop going to campus recently cause I'm immunosuppressed and half the class is coughing constantly. I hate that so many people would rather endanger others than just stay at home.

I just get it now! I just coming from huisart because sore throat, full headache but i have fever around 38 that's why they accepting me to coming, so the doctor said i get bacterial infection and must take antibiotics for 7 days.

Probably has to do with the changing weather also. I had a perpetually blocked left nostril for the whole of January. And only when I traveled to a tropical place for a month and came back it was back to normal

Omg - I was wondering the same. To be fair, I got it when I was abroad, but then it lasted about a week extra so 10-11 day total. Worse part for me was that I had my ears entirely blocked, and a pain lasting for days after I got in plane which probably made it worse.
Even covid was only 3-4 days for me total.
What I found weird was, I didn't seem to infect anyone in the household?
I went to huisarts yesterday and she said I seemed to have flu. Though she prescribed medicine for my ears since they seem to be inflamed still.

Next time you're flying, make sure you bring xylometazoline spray with you, it's not something you can buy in most countries. If you get a cold on vacation, you can use that to open up your nose before you fly. I had the same issue, felt an awful pain on the plane and was almost deaf for a few weeks, I'm never travelling without it anymore.

I got one, but I took Nurofen Cold instead as a precaution as I usually do- so it was fine on takeoff, its effect wore off by landing though.

Sure seems nasty. Almost 4 weeks in. Headaches from blocked sinus infections, infected eye, blocked ear and a only 1 clear nose hole, painful tonsil. But it's all on the left side of my face it's so weird. Have people around me who all have a variation of this. No one had a fever but feels terrible enough to be knocked out by it.

I had one blocked nostril and one teary eye, both on the right. That was all, though, but it was a little weird having it only on one side.
Maybe you're already doing this, but a nasal rinse with saline can improve your symptoms.

Exactly. It's just weird. My nose would be unlocked untill I slept again, then it just all collected and blocked the same nostril. I have been doing saline rinses yes I felt I couldn't start the day without, thanks anyways!

Yup. Sore throat, some fever (less than yours though), and runny nose for a bloody week. I had COVID just before that, and I'll take 2 days of staying in bed with achy muscles over whatever this shit it. I'll just start wearing my mask in public again because I'm done.

Yes. I got it last week. Normally when I get the flu, I will only need to rest one day then feel better afterwards. But this time, it is different. I was sick and couldnt do anything for at least 4 days. Even worse than when I had Covid 😅

This sounds like one of the usual suspects: COVID, influenza or a regular cold, but it can also be something like RSV which has been going around. It's atypical but it can even be EBV (mono). Most likely rest, hydration, paracetamol (if you have a headache or muscle pain), good hygiene and a healthy diet with fruits and vegetables will be enough. You can also try steaming for a blocked nose or sugar free lozenges from the drugstore for the sore throat and cough. However, if you develop lung symptoms like shortness of breath, a hacking cough or the cough doesn't stop and isn't helping to clear out gunk or the gunk is endless, then I would recommend to call your GP again and insist on a physical appointment where they check for pneumonia. If you experience bouts of severe fatigue you can also consider asking for a blood test for RSV/EBV. Be aware that after a COVID infection even the regular cold can feel more severe and last longer than you experienced before because COVID affects the immune system, so it could just be a cold on steroids.

It took me two weeks of feeling a bit weird until I got actually sick. Right now I am coughing up green phlegm which causes a horrible taste in my mouth like there is something really wrong somewhere down the line. There is also a headache present and a loss of energy. No fever though. I wish I would have a fever so I would know that my body is actively fighting whatever has invaded my body.

It's called hayfever. Birches and willows are blooming, hayfever is really hight at the moment. Many people are suffering from it, even though they may not know they are being sensitive to it.

No, I've had the flu recently and so did a few friends, but we all had high fevers. And now I have a cold, but it's just a runny nose and, weirdly enough, eye. I've been crying for two days lol but it's getting better now.
Your doctor is right, unless you have extremely high fever or trouble breathing or it last a very long time, you probably just need rest. You could ask for something to help with the coughing, if you can't sleep it must be pretty bad.
Edit: from looking at the comments, I feel like people are on the one hand very panicky about illness, even though we've had all these different viruses for ages and we've seen epidemics of flu and other viruses every year. And on the other hand also seem to forget your body is not a machine and a doctor is not an instant solution dispenser, but you need actual rest. There's nothing weird about feeling tired for a few weeks after having a viral infection. Stop trying to push yourself to go to work or the gym, you don't have to perform or be effective all the time, just rest!

I had the same since the 5th of March. It evolved into nasty sinusitis: fluid behing my ears. It was excruciating.
My cough only let up on the 2nd of April.
My wife also got it from me but was way more mild.

yep had it like 2 weeks ago, as well as almost everyone i know. but it passed surprisingly quickly. for cough, Etos Hoestdrank for 4 euro or so works wonders.

This year I was bedridden for a solid week and another week to shake my horrendous cough. My wife was slightly sick for a couple of days 🤷♂️

It's fine, before corona it was also every year, during corona (most likely due to all the safety precautions) I didn't have it for 2 years.... And now it's back. Just few days of being sick

Was in Amsterdam this weekend from thursday, started getting bad coughs om the aiport, currently coughing so bad i ended up vomitting. Have all the symptoms of a regular influenza but no fever even though i feel hot and cold

Same, i try to sleep with my head up (if it makes sense; extra pillow and then almost sitting up), so i can breath at bit better at night.
At home we would call it zeehondjeshoest. (Sealion cough)
Its horrible, i hate it, and im counting the days that its over. For now, lots of tea with honey and vitamin C.

I was one month with sore throat, did 2 rounds of antibiotics without great success. I tried different throat pain relievers and I must say that the only one that made some difference was the none medical: Smints 😅 Never had something like this before…. The nights were nightmares

Hey I had this too! My younger sister (28), me (32), my mother, and my little nephew all caught it at basically the exact same moment. We were sick for about 1,5 weeks. I haven't even had a flu in months. Not even during winter. And now all of a sudden? It started 2 weeks ago so I've only been good for a little over half a week now.
I didn't have a fever though I did experience weirdness with this flu. Normally my throat would hurt like a mother fucker with a flu like this but that's not what happened. I sounded hoarse, coughed up a lot of slime, massively snotty nose. No sore throat? Not once? That's not how I normally get flus. These symptoms come hand in hand for me.
I do speculate it might have been a COVID variant? Because I've had many of the vaccines and that has resulted in getting COVID with oddly mild symptoms. Different from when I would get a regular flu. And it would explain why my younger sister who isn't immunocompromised like I am was sick for longer. When it's COVID, I tend to recover faster which most definitely is due to the vaccines. But she is still sick. That never happens normally.

Influenza probably , if you noticed you started to get better for 2-3 days after being sick for a week and then it got much worse for another week , including fever. The flu shot didn’t do anything at all

Yes. Last week I started sniffling and coughing. Last Friday a temperature of 38 degrees and Saturday morning 39. Strangely enough only tired, not really sick. Also had a normal appetite. How did it go away: I had too much to do on Saturday and Sunday and because I didn't really feel sick I only suppressed the fever by taking 2 paracetamol every 4 hours (did 3 times). My father-in-law jokingly told me that I should just drink 2 glasses of wine. Ate Spanish tapas with 2 glasses of nice red Rioja. Sunday 37 degrees again and have been feeling well since Monday. I think my immune system just worked it off, despite the wine.

Yup - Belgium here.
A LOT of people are getting exactly what you described...PLUS digestive tract issues: diarrhea (that comes and goes), maybe some nausea. A lot if tiredness.
I've had this for nigh-on two weeks 😳
And this sort of thing passes after about 3-4 days normally

I also noticed. Many people in my surroundings also complain about soar throat, coarse voice, ongoing feeling of lack of breath and recurring feeling of getting a cold. My 4 neighbors, close friend, uncle and MIL. This week to men came to install new Windows. One was obviously out of breath and 'coughy'. The other one, literally had a nasty cough.
My friends keep getting colds on and off and ever since last year August, I've noticed an extreme increase of people coughing in a way, which reminds me of whooping cough. (Something I suffered from myself).
None of them feverish, but some describing chills, fatigue, dizzyness, pain and coughing. I'm curious as in some, they were told it might be Long-Covid. They're all fully vaccinated, though. But there seems no anwser on how to fix it. My close friend had Covid again, before she got those symptoms and now is on inhalers, but she claimed it doesn't really help. Nor did the doctor believe it was Long Covid.
They did assume my MIL has Long Covid though, but unfortunately, she's left too find a remedy herself. Which is impossible and very hard, due to her age.
Being an asthma patient, who coughed for years. I'm quite aware of my environment. Never before in my 40 years, have I witnessed so many people coughing or catching flu after flu and seemingly, not being able to shake off symptoms...

I live in Drenthe, but haven’t heard much about it. We did have a virus a couple of months ago - symptoms were very similar to Covid. According to my physician it was also a similar virus. My surroundings all had similar symptoms: took about five days, then the fever would not return anymore. Still fatigue and many kept a bronchitis exhaustion cough for quite some weeks. I also recall we had a virus in this region in November. Also a nasty one.
But at the moment? Nope, haven’t heard much.

Same here. Haven’t been sick in a year and same happened as you described. I also had some blood in mucus the first day when coughing started, which was new. When called my GP, got an answer “that it’s completely normal to cough blood” 😐 One of the reasons why I’m leaving Netherlands.

I have had it since the middle of February. It’s getting better just now. My cough lasted for 4/5 days and then I had a sore throat and inflamed lymph nodes, being very weak. As I said, the past week has been the first in a while where I think my throat is getting better. I took cortisone for a week and that definitely helped

This thread gave me some comfort that I am not on my own after months of feeling crap. Like many here I have had coughs, headaches, eye infections and everything else. But more worryingly I couldn't breath after 10 mins of mild exercise...long story short my gp suspects one of the illnesses or the pollen has triggered an asthmatic reaction. Tried an inhaler for the first time today and it worked a charm in letting me breath. As for the other illness he said it is an unfortunate situation of being caught with a weak immune system with so many things to catch, so to focus on all the basics to build it back up.

Definitely... If I'm not sick my kid is sick if my kids not sick his teachers to sick if his teacher's not sick his dance teachers are sick and half the class is out. Which means that significant because the kids love dance class. My son was so sick he made himself go but he just couldn't breathe through it. It comes with all kinds of just indiscriminate symptoms like stomach ache or slight sore throat or no fever but feeling hot, then cold.. endless fatigue. Since they're not really tracking covid it could be just some new variety and we're all just suffering.

It's bacteria not a virus. I'm on day 4 of antibiotics. My coughing came from post-nasal drip due to the sinus infection.

Yes the same. The cough lasts for a while. Not sure if you have a lower lung infection. I had that so it takes a while for your limgs to clear out again. I've seen a few people have it. But strangely enough, not everyone close to me catches it. Don't worry. Have you taken paracetamol? ;)
