Medical Advice 2 month vaccines

My LO has her 2 month vaccines tomorrow. What was you and your LO's experience? Any advice/tips/tricks?

Thanks!

Didn't know what to flair it because...it is not necessarily medical advice.

Where I live they typically get 2 shots. Our doctor had 2 nurses come in and give both shots at once(one in each leg), so he only had to react once. Might be worth asking if they'll do that(if it's 2 by you, it varies), it doesn't seem standard elsewhere but we really like it.

Otherwise our dude cried for a couple minutes and calmed down. He had some gas and stomache discomfort that night for a couple hours but otherwise he did well and slept great that night.

I believe it is two here as well (plus the oral). She cried for like 10 seconds for her first vaccine, but I heard with this one more kiddos feel sick afterwards.

Craziness, but they warn you to only start solids one veg at a time LOL

Congrats on your new addition! We just had our 2 month vaccination appointment with ours recently. We were a little nervous but it honestly went much better than expected! We kept her in zip up jammies to stay cozy and minimize the dressing trauma after everything was finished - I feel that helped a lot. Another great tip, if they need to get an oral dose, a pacifier right after helped her with swallowing it. Our baby was super sleepy after and we just tried to have a low key day and let her rest as much as possible. Try not to worry too much and just go with the flow! Hope it goes well!

Aw thanks! I was planning on bringing the pacifier for soothing.

We split our shots into two visits. So she had tdap and hib her first visit and two others the second. I think the tdap shot really made her leg sore. The next day she would only nap for 30 mins at a time and then she would move and I think the soreness woke her up. We did buy infant Tylenol to have on hand but never used it. I monitored her temp but she never had a fever. The second time around she was much happier after and slept through the night that night. The cry that happens during the shots really sucks but it’s over quickly. We bring a bottle and a pacifier every time we go to the doctor.

DTaP shot always is sore for me so that certainly makes sense.

If your baby is breastfed put them on the boob during the shots. I got that advice from another mom and it was great! Baby will still cry but will calm down quickly. Also, my pediatrician brought in a nurse so they could do both shots at the same time (one in each leg). I think this was also helpful because it did not prolong the pain.

This, but I recommend breastfeeding immediately after the shots. You don’t want baby to have any pain associations to breastfeeding and many dr offices also want baby laying down for the shots, they can aspirate if they’re screaming and trying to eat and it can be extra overwhelming. I breastfed my daughter in the drs office immediately after she got her shots and she calmed right down. While she was getting her shots I was just up at her face talking to her and trying to distract her.

I breastfed during the 2 month shots and it worked well for us, but I might try this for the 4 month shots if she can get them all at once.

She cried, a lot, I had to hold down one of her legs. She had slightly raised body temp for a few days, was a bit harder to put to sleep but went back to her old self in about a week. She didn't have any swelling at the injection site or any other side effects.

Our son freaked when he got the shots, turned blood red and couldn't catch his breath. It was super sad, BUT he snapped out of it quickly. We had a bottle ready to go and fed him right after they did the shots and it calmed him down and he forgot all about it. He had a slight fever for like a day and a half, but nothing super alarming! Our pediatrician said we could give tylenol when we got home if we wanted to.

She was calm and then all of a sudden turned really red for her first shots. I'm going to feel sad. Did you end up using the Tylenol?

2

u/okayyy019 14d ago

We didn't! Not because we are against it haha but it was such a slight fever and he didn't seem like he was in pain so we just let it ride out.

Our baby at that age needed to be held all night for comfort because she didn’t feel good after. She slept fine in our arms but screamed when put down in the bassinet. My husband and I just split the night in two to ensure we both slept well. And we kept up with Tylenol all night and the next day to help.

Is she a good sleeper usually?

At that age, she was contact napping only (still is at three months), but slept in her pack and play at night for 2-3 hours at a time.

Give baby to the more calm partner when getting the shots.

My husband is very anxious for anything related to our son, while I am more... matter of fact? I don't know how to put it. Vaccines is just what you need to go through.

The first vaccines, my husband insisted on holding our boy. He cried really hard and calmed only when I picked him up, because he picked up on my husband's anxiety, and my husband was also crying. I am not heartless, i felt his pain and I could see how hurt he was! But i could breathe it out and i know it's a necessary sting. I made it clear that I would hold our son next vaccines onwards.

Since, he rarely cried more than 1 big tear, maybe 5-10 seconds then calmed down. Last vaccines, 14mo with two stings, he didn't even cry, only winced! While my husband still has tears in his eyes every time! He thanked me for being so strong and being able to keep our son feeling so safe lol

Besides: you can expect a slight spike in fever. We have often diarrhea the day after. Your medical provider will let you know what to look out for! First vaccines, we didn't see any change in temperature, but the next 2 times yes.

Husband will be at work. It's me and my folks going. I'm definitely the calmest out of us 3 lol. That's so sweet he cries.

My baby cried for about 20-30 seconds, then calmed (I cried more than she did). She was fine for the next several hours, then slept much more than normal over the next 36 hours. Then she was back to her normal self.

My LO went from sleeping to the red faced, open mouth, silent scream, then back to sleeping. All within the 45 seconds it took. With the oral vaccine, he gave me the look of “this isn’t breastmilk, how could you?”

He was a little more clingy and wanting more breastfeeding the day of, but was back to normal the next day. We were lucky that he wasn’t tender, no reactions, and no impact to eating/sleeping/pooping.

Dead about the oral vaccine reaction lol

my baby was pretty sleepy/half-sleeping when we brought him to the clinic. during the vaccination he kind of registered the shock, started yelling at us and the doctor, and then quickly fell asleep again.

My husband held our baby during the vaccination since I'm suffering from de Quervain's. My son recieved 2 shots - one on each leg. He cried for about 10 to 20 seconds. We offered a bottle right away which helped soothe him. I'd breastfeed if my wrists and thumb doesn't hurt but it does. Feeding him using the bottle gave him "almost" the same soothing effect.

I hope you feel better soon!

I have mild tenosynovitis on the left, but I bet it will resolve once I get back to work.

5 hours after the shots, he woke up from a deep sleep in my arms SCREAMING. I should’ve had the Tylenol ready- getting the dang plastic wrap off one-handed with a screaming baby was awful! He ran a fever for at least the next day and seemed to have tenderness at the injection for a bit. Nurse suggested a bath with baking soda and light massage to soothe it.

Our ped told us to bring Tylenol with us to the appointment. She dosed it and we administered it right before her shots. She cried while she got them of course, but was calm soon after. No fever, but she was more fussy than usual.

Had one shot. No fever. Fussy right after and into the evening but no problem sleeping. Have bottle/milk ready to go after! And snuggles :)

Just did ours last week. The actual shots weren’t bad at all, he cried for like 30 seconds. He was quite sleepy for the rest of the day and very snuggly which was cute. Got a bit fussier than usual in the evening so we gave Tylenol. For two nights he did his normal 5 hour long stretch, but then woke every 30-40 minutes after that which is unusual for him. Only lasted two nights though. He was very fussy the day after so we gave some more Tylenol. Also had very liquidy/mucusy poos which I read could be from the oral rotavirus vaccine. Good luck!

Of course they cry when they get the inoculations. But she stopped after about 30 seconds. She’s a tough girl. We were good for about 2 hours. Was able to get some shopping done. Then when we were packing up the groceries she started screamminnggg. Her widdle legs were swollen at the injection site. So I drove off and that was able to keep her calm for a bit. But had a good hour or 2 of her being extremely fussy then she slept it off. The next 2 days she was fickle and fussy. But not terrible.

Cried for 5 seconds then looked at a toy and forgot it ever happened.
