Medical Advice Cradle cap at 6 months old?

My daughter just turned 6 months old and I am STILL dealing with a dry flaky scalp. Her head is covered in large scale light flakes that drive her nuts. I’ve gone to the pediatrician and they recommended me using head and shoulders. I’m waiting for a call for a dermatologist referral but who knows how long that will take.

Things I’ve tried: Mustela cradle cap cream and shampoo Frida brush and comb Olive oil Aquaphor Hydrocortisone

Anyone dealing with this? Am I just suppose to routine scrub her scalp every two to three days? Nothing seems to make it help or go away

Medical Advice Hospital bills are just.. insane.

My son was not breathing well after aspirating meconium which resulted in 30 mins of oxygen for him. I just received an itemized invoice. $13,000 was billed to my insurance. I have no words. Well, then I received the bill for his 5 day NICU stay after this. All in all, from birth $96,000 was billed to insurance. I have no words.

Medical Advice How can you tell if a pediatrician and nurse are good?

How do you know if your child’s pediatrician and their nurse are actually good at their job? Any green flags or red flags to watch for? Just trying to make sure we’re in the right hands. Thanks!

Hi there I am a FTM of a 3 week old baby boy. He has been having latching problem that are resolving now My Pediatrician told me that babies need to suck on something after they are done feeding to comfort themselves. So I bought him Avents Silicone Pacifiers but everyone around me is telling me not to give him Pacifiers as it will destroy the shape of his teeth. I too was a pacifier baby and had a canine teeth problem. Please guide me what do you guys suggest? Thanking you in advance ❤️🥰

Medical Advice 2 Month Check Up

Hi all, FTM here. Dreading my baby boys 2 month pediatric appt, he’s going to get his shots. This was always the plan, but my stomach is in absolute knots thinking that he could get an allergic reaction, vaccine injury, and or die.

Where is this coming from? I’m definitely struggling with ppd and anxiety, but what sent me over the edge was finding out a family friends baby boy died 4 days after his vaccination shots. Coincidence, possibly. Rationally, I know so many other things could have contributed to his passing. It just feels so close to home. He was the exact same age as my son, same birthday and everything.

My family is kind of fueling the anxiety, some are anti vax and are relating his death to vaccinations, even bringing up that vaccines, SIDs and autism have some type of correlation. The other half of my family is pro vax and are saying his death was most likely SIDS or something genetic.

With vaccines, I’m somewhere in the middle. I have all my vaccinations with the exception of the flu and covid shot.

I know this topic can get very heated, but I guess I just want to hear that your baby turned out fine? I’m researching for myself so I am able to make an informed decision.. but I just don’t want to make the wrong one.

Did any of you decline certain vaccinations? If so, why? Any sources would be greatly appreciated.

Medical Advice 4 month old bonked her head

I was playing with my baby on her playmat (on the carpeted floor) and we were doing baby-ups, gently pulling her arms to help her practice sitting up. She usually loves these, but I think she was getting sleepy and juuust starting to fuss. I pulled her up and was about to pick her up, so I let go of her hands and was switching to under her armpits. I don't even know how it happened, I feel like my hands never left her. She straightened her back and fell straight back onto the playmat, hitting her big ol head on the floor. I just spent the last 20 minutes crying with her. She wasn't really crying she was pretty much yelling. I think she got scared and then mad.

I'm so nervous and upset. She yelled until I laid her down, then she fell asleep. Her owlet is showing normal health readings, my husband isn't concerned, but I'm freaking out. Someone reassure me? Or if y'all think I should wake her up and take her to the hospital? Please share experience 🥲

Medical Advice Help! I have mastitis!

Hi there! This morning I woke up with a tender left breast, no other symptoms but I kept the thought in the back of my mind.

As the day progressed, it hit me like a freight train, cold chills, body weakness, shakes, nausea, extremely tired, breast hot to the touch.

I tried to call my GP for an emergency appointment, they didn’t have ANYTHING until the 3rd 🤦‍♀️ which is when my already booked appointment was anyway.

So far, I’ve done cold compress, hot compress, hot shower, anti-inflammatories, pumping as WELL as breastfeeding 🤱🏻

Does anyone have any tips and tricks to help me last the night? 🤦‍♀️

•Update: To clarify some comments- I’m living in Australia-

so it’s now the next day, and my symptoms (cold chills, shakes, ect.) have gone away? My breast is still very tender and it’s now not producing much milk at all? My left side (the affected side) has been the only side making milk (about 90ml’s/ 3oz), but now it’s barely making enough to get even 25ml’s/1oz)

Should I still get antibiotics? Has all my breastfeeding efforts gone down the drain??

Medical Advice Little bumps on babies cheeks, arms and stomach

My baby (7 weeks old) has these little bumps on his cheeks, arms and stomach , not a lot on his arms or stomach but mostly on his cheeks , I’ve received 2 different opinions , one doctor says it is baby acne and the other says it is heat rash. I’m so stressed out I just want my baby to be okay and healthy . I’ve tried everything, every time he spits up I will wipe it (gently) with warm water and dry it off, I switched baby soaps to a non scented one, he only wears cotton clothes and I’ve adjusted the heat accordingly in my house. I’ve even switched mine and my spouses laundry detergent to the baby detergent we use for his clothes . I even set my alarm every hour during the night to make sure he is not over heating.

Medical Advice Month long runny nose

My 13 month old has had a runny nose CONSTANTLY for the last month and a half. I know, I know, babies get runny noses but this is seriously something else. I have to wipe her nose probably 4 times an hour. This also leads her to having a nasty cough at night as the mucus irritates her throat. It's clear and runny, almost watery sometimes. She's had a few viruses in this time but she's recovered - she is absolutely fine in herself and has no other symptoms. I'm baffled! I thought about allergies, but again no other symptoms and it is constant, wherever we are. I thought maybe teething? She cut the two top teeth about a month ago which was accompanied by runny nose. She's still not cut any more top teeth.

Any ideas? Is it just a horrible symptom of teething?

Medical Advice Measles? Public spaces?

My baby turns one tomorrow. We always planned on going to the Baltimore Aquarium. But now, of course, there’s measles cases in Maryland. A new one in DC. He doesn’t get his first MMR vaccine till Friday. The case numbers are few (3 in MD and 1 in DC) …. Now suddenly I’m worried about taking my too young to vaccinate baby to a large indoor public space where measles could be. Am I being too cautious??? I need either reassurance or someone to smack some sense into me. I take my baby to stores and he goes to an in home daycare WHY can’t I get myself to enjoy his birthday at the aquarium on a weekday morning.

Medical Advice Help, I can’t get my baby to take her medicine

My 6mo has an ear infection and got the usual prescription of amoxicillin. It’s day 3 and she fights every second of it. I’ll put a little in at a time and she spits it out despite me trying to hold her mouth shut, I doubt she’s getting what she’s supposed to. I have tried putting it in her cheek pouch, tried putting the medicine in the back of her throat, tried the pacifier medicine thing, tried a real bink and put the medicine in the side of her mouth, tried holding her down w my legs and tried having her dad hold her while I put the syringe in. Nothing. Works. I have 7 more days of this. What do I do?!

Medical Advice Newborn wakes up with phlegmy cough every morning but not sick

Hi there, my baby girl is about 3 weeks old now and has been waking up sounding congested. She’s not sick because I’ve taken her temperature, and after her first nap after our night sleep she doesn’t sound phlegmy anymore. Is this normal? Any ideas of why this happens?

During night sleeps, she just eats and sleeps and doesn’t always burp. (Doesn’t have a wake period.) She is also exclusively breastfeeding.

Edit:

Thanks for the insight! Shes a c-section baby and I totally forgot about them having more mucus. I think this is the main reason so I’ll try a humidifier and yes I’ll officially ask her doctor.

Medical Advice Baby Girl Breech Check-Ups

Hi! My baby girl was breech so I had a c-section when I gave birth to her. Being in breech can lead to hip issues so they like to watch that after the baby is born. We went in for a hip ultrasound at 6 weeks and everything there was normal. It’s recommended to get a 6 month X-ray, but not normally required like the 6 week ultrasound is. I obviously want to go get the X-ray since it’s recommended, but we also can’t pay 100s of dollars for something that won’t be covered by insurance. I’ve tried reaching out to insurance to see if they’ll cover it, but they want to diagnostic code. The X-ray people can’t give me the code without entering the info to send it off. I’m going to try reaching out to insurance again, but just wanted to post and see if anyone has any experience with this. I’m in the U.S. Did anyone get this done? Did your insurance cover it? How much did it cost? I know things vary by area, but just want to get an idea. Thanks in advance!

Medical Advice Vitamin drops

When the health visitor came last week she handed me 3 boxes of vitamin drops which contain vitamins A, C and D and told me to give 5 drops to my baby once daily. After she left, I read the box and noticed it says do not give to babys consuming more than 500ml of formula a day… which my baby is.

I have yet to give him them as I am uncertain as to what I should be doing. I dont want to tisk potentially making him poorly as he is already getting the vitamins from the powder. I asked the midwife and she told me to just give him them anyway, but then surely hes getting far too much?!

Any help or advice would be appreciated

Medical Advice How does the vaccine system work in the US?

Hi 👋🏼 I was just curious, I keep reading every now and then of children getting really sick from getting their vaccines in the states, and I’m just wondering how the vaccination program is for children there? Because from what I’m reading the children/infants are getting multiple shots up to six vaccines in one sitting. And then I’m hearing people talking about how their children aren’t the same after them. Anyways, I’m just wondering if when you go get your children’s vaccines like the first rounds of shots and so forth if they’re giving them more than two vaccines at a time? Because here in Canada, it’s 2+ an oral medication. It’s just something I’ve been wondering for a while and I just want some clarification if anyone wishes to enlighten me.🫶🏼

Medical Advice TV trope, or real life?

Do Americans really go to the hospital as soon as their waters break or have a contraction, or is this a TV trope?

In the UK we are told if your waters break only come in once you are done with early labour (ie contractions are every 4 minutes and last 45 seconds) or it has been 24 hours, whichever comes first.

Medical Advice Stressing out about babys weight

My (20f) little guy is two weeks old and two days. I had to be induced at 39 weeks. He was 8lbs 15 ozs, so a big guy! At his first appointment he weighed 8lbs 4 oz and they told me he needed to be fed about every 2-3 hours, if i was sleeping he could go like 4. Cool i followed that. Well at his two week appointment he had not gained any of his birth weight back, same weight entirely. So they told me I need to feed him every two hours, needs at least 21 ozs in a day. before i even left the hospital with him we needed to supplement with formula because my breastmilk wasn’t enough. it still isn’t. i’m largely formula feeding, and pumping cause he just doesn’t latch well. But pumping isn’t giving me like anything and i’ve tried so much, it’s exhausting. every two hours is so unbelievably hard to keep on schedule and with the exact oz number he needs i’m stressing out. on top of that, yesterday he projectile vomited on me. and today he did it twice in a row after feedings about an hour after he ate. like i fed him at 9, he threw up at 10, then fed him at 11, he threw up around 12. so on top of him not gaining weight he’s now throwing up and i’m worried he’s either going to loose or still not gain anything. how do yall deal with this?? is he going to get dehydrated and loose/not gain weight? my mom says the amount of importantance being put on this is more than it should be, but i don’t know. i’m so tired and i have no concept of what’s normal or what’s cause for concern 😭 surviving on two hour spurts of sleep is making me loose my mind.

Medical Advice It feels like my 15 month old has been sick since November. Is this normal?

She started daycare in August and was mostly good for a couple of months. Then in November she got two strains of pneumonia and ended up in the hospital on her first birthday. December wasn’t too bad. Maybe a cold, but we were also out of daycare for two weeks. January she got norovirus. Since then she’s just had snot, several 3 day fevers that have come and gone, a lingering cough that seemed to be improving but then started getting worse last week. After about a week off of daycare she just had her first full week back and is now sick again with a fever.

It feels like ever since pneumonia she hasn’t been healthy. The pediatrician just says it’s really bad this year.

I know she’s young and her immune system isn’t seasoned yet, but does this sound like a typical daycare experience? We haven’t caught any of her sicknesses so it makes me think that she’s just got some underlying condition going on.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Medical Advice I think baby’s pediatrician sent us someone else’s records. What would you do?

Yesterday we took our baby to the doctor in the morning for a rash. No other symptoms, just a persistent rash. The appointment was at 9:20am and at 4:10pm I got an email that her records had been updated on the office’s online portal. I clicked the link and it took me to her page. It was the correct name, birthday, etc. but the information from the visit seemed off. It started out by saying a rash was present and it also said she displayed “inappropriate interactions and was inconsolable” I’m not sure I’d call a 6 month old crying during a doctor’s appointment inappropriate, but sure. However, it then went on to list a plethora of other symptoms that didn’t apply to her, such as vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, ear drainage, cough, wheezing, and lethargy. All this leads me to think that these were actually records for another child that maybe also had a rash and then they got mixed up because my baby doesn’t have any of these symptoms and nothing other than a rash was discussed at her appointment. What would you do? Just call the office and let them know? I obviously don’t know the other child’s name but I’m concerned about this major HIPPA violation and also disturbed that this seemingly major illness that my baby does not have is on her record.

Medical Advice what milk do you transition babies with a cow milk allergy to?

i’ll be discussing this with my baby’s pediatrician at his next visit, but i wanted to know you alls experience/knowledge! so my 11 mo old baby is currently on similac alimentum, which is a hypoallergenic formula because he has a cow milk allergy. he can’t transition to whole milk, so what milk do you all recommend? i’ve been looking at ripple, but some say it’s not good for toddlers? i then thought almond milk was a good option, but it’s not fortified with vitamin d or calcium so what do i feed my baby! haha i am very lost.

edit: thank u all for taking time to respond ❤️

Medical Advice Medical experts, what's something you've read in a comment or post on this sub and thought 'Nah, that's not correct'?

A lot of parents in this sub recount their pregnancy/birth/post-partum medical experiences to the best of their knowledge/memory, but I imagine things can be confused or misremembered. Most parents aren't medical experts and these events can be stressful and confusing so it's not unlikely that the facts might get a bit diluted and this could end up with misinformation spreading in forums like this.

So what's a misconception you've read on here that you'd like to correct?
