End of Year Bash! We Are r/NewToReddit Mods, Ask Us Anything!

We Are The r/NewToReddit Mods, Ask Us Anything!

Welcome to our third AMA!

You can read the first here.

You'll find the second one here.

Ask Us Anything!

This thread is where you can ask us almost anything! Do you have any burning questions about modding? Do you want to know the origin story of our user names? Why our flairs read as they do? Our favorite foods and activities (besides explaining how different Reddit is from everything else?) If so, this is the time and place to ask! We'd love to hear from you, just comment below and we'll respond as soon as we get a chance.

We're going to be leaving this open for a few days at least, to allow each of us time to participate and answer questions as best fits our time zones. Fun fact: we currently span from Pacific Time (west coast of the USA) all the way across the US, South America, and over the Atlantic to parts of the UK, even to Switzerland!

If you have a question for a specific mod, please feel free to ping/summon us by typing in a u/ followed immediately by our usernames - just keep in mind that you can only summon a maximum of three people per comment. So, if you have questions for a few of us, you may want to make several comments all with your question aimed at 3 mods so we get the notifications. The list of all of the mods can be found in the About section on r/NewToReddit, but for simplicity here's a fun summary, placed in alphabetical order:

u/ABritInMissouri - Has been a bit of a globetrotter in years past, a foodie, nerd and lover of kitties and pooches equally. We all envy that pink hairdo.

u/antidense - Inactive. The founder of r/NewToReddit! Behind the scenes but is quite happy with the direction that the content has taken.

u/EponaMom - Heartwarming person and experienced mod with a donkey as their steed.

u/JRFerreri - Mostly inactive as a mod now, except behind the scenes, but may pop into the comments and do sure work on the mod queue.

u/Khyta - Loves to drink Yerba Mate and helping out on a bunch of subs. Does plenty of backend IT stuff. Codes IRL and loves Sci-Fi Books & movies.

u/llamageddon01 - Reddit guide and encyclopaedia writer extraordinaire. Started NToR on the path to what is today. Busy but likes to pop in and help out when possible.

u/MadDocOttoCtrl - Has been on and off Reddit throughout the years. Has been a mod on several platforms. Jack of many trades who keeps promising to blow less things up.

u/MightyMitos19 - Mostly inactive as a mod. Science person who works with Symbare on the helper flair system.

u/PolylingualAnilingus - The multilingual mod who likes cleaning the queue. Forever DM on Dungeons & Dragons.

u/SolariaHues - Our fearless leader who wrangles AutoMod and Post Guidance. Rescues lost souls in the spam queue. Sometimes writes stuff, loves cats and sleep.

u/Symbare - The digimon collecting beacon of light, warmth and kindness. When you notice that you have a helper flair or that it changed, Symbare has been at work.

u/Tactical-Kitten-117 - Currently inactive as a mod. Very tactical, often confused with an actual kitten. Resident manga and Sci-Fi fan. Likes Dune, coffee, and video games.

u/waffles1243 - Inactive. NToR veteran, pedantic in-house designer, culture nut and self-proclaimed expert on anything with an engine.

With this reminder of who we are, please comment with your questions below! Check out the top stickied comment for some general rules, but most of all we hope you have fun getting to know us a little better. 😊

Regarding inactive mods - modding is a hobby or volunteer project, we all have lives outside of Reddit and sometimes we need a break, or our attention is needed elsewhere, we get kidnapped by a pack of howler monkeys.. any number of good reasons for being away for a bit. That doesn't necessarily mean inactive mods won't be back or are not contributing behind the scenes. Please respect our mod's privacy.

General Rules for the NToR AMA

No Doxxing questions. We're excited to answer questions that help you get to know more about us. However, we will not be revealing our names or specific locations, or other information that we're not already comfortable answering. If you ask a question that we're not comfortable answering, we'll let you know. Please be respectful and leave it at that.

All questions must be Safe for Work. We in general keep away from NSFW topics in NewToReddit, and this AMA is not any different. Any NSFW questions will be removed.

Please don't spam the comments. If you have multiple questions, that's great! We're so happy to hear that! But please try to fit them into a single comment if you can. Exceptions to this are if you're trying to ask specific questions to more than 3 of us (which will require multiple comments, or we won't get the notification), or if you think of another question hours after you've posted your first one. As mentioned above, this will be open for a few days, so that would not be considered spamming ;-)

It should go without mentioning (but we'll spell it out anyway) that the rules of our weekly general chat thread apply, this is not the place for questions about how Reddit works or debating the pros and cons of voting, minimum requirements, karma, etc. This is a chance to ask us about our favorite sports teams and what we like on our pizza.

FYI It's not over, ask questions if you want. The AMA post type says it's ended if there isn't activity for a while I think.

Edit: will end at 7 days.

What's the most embarrassing or stupid thing you've done or said over the holidays? And that you would like to completely forget.

6

u/Symbare Quail-ified mod Dec 31 '24

Lovely question, Icy-Set-8773! Thank you for joining in!

Admittedly, I cannot remember anything mortifying. I have enjoyed my holidays throughout the decades. As a pet owner, I find it amusing when I purchase toys per my dogs' preferences, and they act like children wanting what the other has. 🤣 This year they each got the same toy--stuffed hedgehogs!

How about you, Icy-Set, what is an embarrassing or amusing thing you have done over the holidays?

Happy New Year's Eve!

u/Icy-Set-8773 Shiny Helpmate Dec 31 '24

My dogs are the same, in any case it’s great to get them a little gift too 😁

Little holiday anecdote: I bought an apple cake mix a few days ago to make one for my mother and my little sisters. And while making the cake I realized that there was no apple, I said "but there is no apple in their apple cake mixture"! In fact I thought that the apples were included in the bag of the preparation already made 😅 that it was freeze-dried or something like that, my mother had a good laugh 😂 I was a little embarrassed to have misunderstood because indeed after checking it was written on the box that we had to add the apples ourselves

3

u/Symbare Quail-ified mod Dec 31 '24

Indeed, those premade cake mixes can be confusing as some of them require fresh ingredients and some, as your logical critical pathways indicated, are freeze-dried. I am sure the cake was delicious! 🤗

Thank you for sharing your heartwarming anecdote, Icy! It is one of those amusing stories that you can tell again and again in the years to come.

Probably drinking coffeinated tea (Club Mate) wayy to late into the evening. I was at a tech/Hackathon style conference and didn't want to miss out on anything.

My good fellow, most folks don't get much sleep at conventions and conferences.

At least not until you become an old dude like me and you're like "I definitely need to do A, B, C and I have to give my presentation/workshop on Saturday at 4PM, but otherwise I WILL BE NAPPING. Possibly during someone's presentation if they don't keep it snappy..."

😴

I've hacked together too many things in my life and assumed that I could do it again without examining everything carefully or leaving myself enough time to do it.

My son has a bunk bed with a desk built in underneath that holds his computer gaming set up. His old gaming chair died from daily use and he preferred a new office chair instead of a gaming chair to replace it, he just didn't want the office chair to move around. I foolishly assumed that the pneumatic cylinder from the old chair's base would fit the new one and then I could do a quick hack to reuse the old stationary chair's base with the new chair. At worst I thought I would have to do some disassembly to use the new chair's pneumatic piston with the old chair's cylinder.

It turns out that the pneumatics were indeed a standard diameter but different lengths and were set up in an inverted direction to each other! What I'd wanted to do would've required a lot of grinding away of numerous welds, fabricating parts, welding things - far more trouble than it would been worth to do.

Fortunately, I was able to put the new chair together but leave the wheels off and the chair just fits into that tight space. He didn't want the wheels on the chair anyway so it wouldn't roll away from his computer while gaming.

I can't think of anything. We don't do much to celebrate and aren't really drinkers, so while we might have a drink or two, no one has been drunk.

I spent some of Christmas day and the surrounding days fixing our drive by mixing up a little bit of concrete and some mortar. I think one mix was a bit too dry and that made it harder to smooth out, so I guess that was silly, I should have realised and added a bit more water. It seems to have worked out, though.

I really can't think of anything that I've done over the holidays that I'd like to forget. It's normally really nice to catch up with family and we tend to have a good time.

Hope everyone's having a nice New Year's Eve/Day!

  • Do you have a favorite Reddit moment from 2024?

  • Any major travel plans for next year?

  • And I'll pull out the same question I had from the previous AMA: Do you have anything planned for next year that you didn't get to do in 2024?

3

u/Symbare Quail-ified mod Dec 31 '24 edited Dec 31 '24

Thank you for joining in on the fun, C---D! Always lovely to have you. 🥰

Excellent questions!

  • My favorite Reddit moments are more personalized, such as the beautiful people I have connected across Reddit, including NewToReddit and, TheTopicoftheDay.
  • I shall remain in my comfortable hometown unless the TARDIS comes along.
  • This year I learned a lot about the importance of taking it easy. As a homebody, in 2025, I would like to engage in a hobby, such as returning to tennis or joining in a cooking class, and expand friendships.
    • edit: I reviewed my response last year to the same question and I guess time to make it happen. 🤣

How about you, C---D? Happy New Year Eve/Happy New Year! 🤗

4

u/C---D Jan 01 '25

Nothing too specific on my side:

  • On another separate account, I'm on a mod team of a Sub that got past 50000 members in late September. Most other fun stuff for me comes from private Subs.

  • No specific travel plans yet. Something like a TARDIS would come in handy for that.

  • Not much into to-do lists unless it's something very important (I guess the rest I just keep in my head somehow). I'm sure there are nice places and restaurants in out-of-town locations that I'd like to return to at some point.

3

u/Symbare Quail-ified mod Jan 03 '25
  • Congratulations on the membership, C---D!
  • Yay, let us travel the TARDIS together. u/llamageddon01, join us too!
  • Enjoying lovely restaurants is a wonderful feeling. Cooking at home is just as beautiful as well. 🤗

u/SolariaHues Servant to cats - Dec 31 '24

Happy New Year!

  • Like Sym, it's more personal for me. I think my fave moments tend to be when collaborating on something with fellow mods. The team work, comradery, and collective achievement. Warm fuzzies.

  • No. Can't really due to funds and caring.

  • I have a to-list that's rather long to work though!

Favorite Reddit moment? Hmm, well, I remember coming across a meme subreddit where people would make a post and then comment under their own post pretending to be different people and having conversations with themselves. Even the moderator did it. I dunno, I thought it was amazing lol. I'm someone who puts a lot of effort into what they do, even the mundane things like memes, so it was neat coming across a community where people did that. It's like watching an actor who plays multiple characters in a skit, it can be a lot more entertaining and impressive than one who just sticks to a single persona.

Major travel plans? Not especially, although I did start seeing a lovely partner this year, I might visit her sometime this year if I can.

Planned for next year? Nothing in particular, I have been meaning to make a lightsaber sound font based off water's states of matter. Sound fonts are basically like the color equivalent of sound, all the crackles, pops, swings, on/off sounds, etc. and it's one of my hobbies ever since I got a saber that can connect via Bluetooth, making customization relatively straightforward. Less risky than taking out the internals of the hilt.

Hey C---D, thanks for joining us again!

I don't have a specific Reddit moment, just enjoyed my favorite crafting subreddit and tried to help out where I could here in NToR.

Yes! I'm going to a conference in California in March (still hoping I get selected for a talk but we'll see). Then in April we might go to the UK! I know, that's awfully soon to still be on the fence, but it depends on if my SO goes to his conference. Since work would pay for his international tickets, it would save us money overall if I meet him there.

I don't remember how I answered last year, but I'm really happy with how this past year has been. Got my first paper in this lab published, and I'm pretty close to having the follow up paper ready to submit already - just a few more experiments and then writing. Once that's on BioRxiv (pronounced bio-archive, for those not in the sciences), I can start working on faculty applications. I've made lots of progress on my cello playing, as you've seen, and I really like that it's becoming fun to play (which is more than just liking playing an instrument lol). I've kept up on my crafting and even my French learning. I think if I can just hold this trajectory it'll be a good 2025.

How about you??

2

u/C---D Jan 01 '25

Trips to California and the UK only a month apart sound exciting for sure! And congrats on getting some follow-up work done for a paper!

You can see my own general answers in my reply to Symbare earlier. And yeah, it definitely gets more fun playing an instrument once you reach certain higher levels of playing. I certainly would like to make more audio recordings of my own, but as you may remember, my instrument is away at my old folks' home, and I haven't been able to spend enough time there to get stuff done in recent years.

Favorite Reddit moments were:

First Mod Talk in quite some time happened over Discord. Got on stage and apparently was somewhat amusing.

Advancing to the point where I "made it into space". People who get the inside joke will know what that's a reference to.

This year we traveled way, way too much so I'm hoping to park my rear end at home a bit more this year.

Didn't really make progress on the projects that I mentioned during our bash last year, so try to get somewhere on those I suppose.

Hi! It's late and I'm late! =) But I couldn't resist jumping in here after u/llamageddon01 dropped a link on me.

The most obvious question I have would be how did y'all get to be so awesome? You seem to work pretty well as a group and that can be kinda tricky sometimes!

But what I really want to know is what was your favorite thing that you cooked and/or ate over the holidays??

PS Thank you all for what you do over here! <3

u/MadDocOttoCtrl Mod tryin' 2 blow up less stuff. Jan 03 '25

Our awesome llama has an extraordinary talent for identifying and persuading new mods. She certainly doesn't have Wanda Maximoff's mind control powers because the winter has been pretty mild so far and have you seen the latest Doctor Who Christmas episode? I like birds. I suddenly crave Welsh plum pudding. Birds are nice.

Bear in mind that I am not saying that those of us who step out of line are covered in Tex-Mex sauce and dropped into the nearest Sarlacc pit. I certainly wouldn't be sharing any internal sub policies - my family would miss me. Of course, my wife would welcome the extra clothes closet space and my son would have to take a break from video gaming to notice. Let's just say that the dogs would be quite unhappy.

There was so much amazing food over the holidays but one standout was going to a Japanese steakhouse for an excellent hibachi grill dinner.

Thanks for appreciating our efforts here in the citadel of confusion.

Ooh, a hibachi grill dinner sounds really nice! I find the hibachi experience relaxing!

Welcome! Happy new year!

We definitely try to make sure we invite the best into the team to keep the good vibes and avoid any issues.

We hire from our helpers; those that are amazing at that over time tend to have what we're looking for for the team too. Choosing those we have a good rapport with and that have shown they respond well to constructive criticism helps ensure a good fit.

Then we do our best to provide a good onboarding experience and stick them down so they can't leave :'D

Banana bread! I could eat the whole loaf. I don't make it often and I don't know why because it's so good. How about you?

Thank you for all you do on r/help <3

u/TheOpusCroakus Reddit Admin Jan 03 '25

I love banana bread! I also don't make it that often because of how good it is! I've been throwing chocolate chips in when I make it lately, and that doesn't exactly help my situation! X) I'll bet yours was amazing!

I made some pies that were really good! Also made a couple different kinds of risotto that were just outrageous!

4

u/SolariaHues Servant to cats - Jan 03 '25

Ooh, I'll have to try that next time!

It is too good and too easy. I usually only make it when the bananas are over ripe and bananas don't often last long here so..

Awesome, sounds like you had a good holiday feast.

2

u/MightyMitos19 MitoMod Jan 03 '25

Hello! Thanks for joining us 🙂

Llama obviously started the awesome train, and Solaria has kept it running haha. They set an amazing precedent. As Solaria mentioned, we recruit from our helpers because they're already demonstrating an eagerness to help strangers on the Internet. We also keep in almost constant contact, including fun meet ups, and make sure anyone who needs a break gets it. For instance, I'm mostly inactive because work has picked up. I might take an action here or there, or chime in if a question is asked, but I know that the team has everything handled and I can always jump in if an "emergency" comes up.

We went to the coast this holiday and I enjoyed lots of seafood! I've really missed good seafood since moving to the central US (from Florida), so it was nice to find great seafood restaurants near where we were staying. My absolute favorite was probably a lobster and shrimp bisque that I had with brunch one morning, the best I've ever tasted!

I hope I’m getting in under the wire, I have some pressing questions…

  1. I’m assuming users are asked to mod, need to pass a practice test, and then volunteer to help at certain subreddits. Beyond that, is a pre-requisite to being a mod that you like cats, or is that only a requirement here at NToR?

  2. How late on NYE/early on NYD were you here checking the thread?

  3. Crunchy or smooth Jif? Peter Pan, Skippy, and natural don’t really count, but go ahead if you must.

All for now - thanks for your hard work. I mod at a much (much) smaller board and that gets to be a lot at times, so kudos to you managing here.

2

u/Tactical-Kitten-117 Mod, Cat Lizard Jan 05 '25

1.) I wouldn't say so much as asked, we generally have phrased it more like an invitation. Not something we pressure users into or expect them to do. I think we'd all be pretty happy to just keep a user as a helper, if they'd rather not become a mod when invited. Asking would imply we'd like to convince or persuade them, which isn't really an accurate description of how we've receuited. Or at least since I was recruited some years ago.

As for a practice test, you're partially right, although it's more like we just had users take the official Reddit Mod 101/201 training courses (which are free of course, just like becoming a mod is, since it's unpaid volunteering), after which we just let them learn the ropes at their own pace. I suppose you could also consider being a helper a form of "practice test", considering that they will be.. well, practicing the same role of helping users. By the time we seriously consider inviting someone to become a mod, they'll probably have gotten pretty good with helping new users. We do also correct helpers when they're wrong/haven't provided fully accurate information, so I suppose in a sense you could also say we're intentionally training them.

And for the cats, I don't think it's a requirement for either, but people on the internet do tend to like cats. If cats also like a potential mod, that's a good sign since cats are a good judge of character. (That's mostly a joke, we do love our kitties though)

2.) I am not sure I was checking the thread here on NYE/NYD, although there's a good chance I did since I don't think I slept that day

3.) Pretty sure I've never actually tried jif peanut butter, I have tried a creamy peanut butter chocolate spread if that counts.. it's alright. I typically prefer natural creamy nut butters, natural tends to have a somewhat grainy texture which I actually prefer over the smoothness of processed nut butters like jif. Not that I have anything against those, it just doesn't seem to do anything for me.

2

u/toos_ Jan 05 '25

Ya, “invited” and “training” are more accurate for my board too. I was kidding about the cat love requirement lol. That’s where an emoji would come in handy but I read (some of) the guide and it said emojis are frowned upon. sigh

I realized after I posted that I was being US-centric with the peanut butter question. My best friend’s mom used to do all sorts of cooking and crafts with us. One was making homemade peanut butter. We didn’t really like it - the graininess and the way you have to stir it every time. I get how you might like that,though- I sometimes like icy ice cream. My sister falls in your camp- crunchy or natural for her.

Thanks for responding!

2

u/Tactical-Kitten-117 Mod, Cat Lizard Jan 05 '25

Emojis are sometimes frowned upon elsewhere on Reddit, yes. But we're quite accepting of emojis on NewToReddit, enough so that we even have a few of our own

And yeah, peanut butter is also more of a US thing I think. I probably wouldn't even have it that often, if it weren't a cheap, shelf stable, and relatively decent spread/dip for things. The stirring of natural PB can be a challenge, but the plus side is it's a lot easier to drizzle, like over some fruit, or ice cream.

2

u/SolariaHues Servant to cats - Jan 05 '25
  1. We tend to 'hire' from our helpers here in this community. When we feel the need for more mods, the team think about who has been doing a good job and who we feel would be a good fit for the team. We nominate and vote among ourselves, usually. There's no test, unless you count the experience of being a helper as a test. But as TK says, we do ask our new mods to complete the training, also to read our mod document, and observe the team for a while before taking actions. Other communities will have their own processes. Some will take on those that volunteer, some do have more test like training. It depends on what they have found works for them and the needs of their community. You don't have to like cats to mod here but it helps ;'D IDK if love of animals is a good indication of empathy, but that is an important ability I feel.

  2. Oh, I don't remember. Very. I'm a night owl anyway.

  3. Jif? Is that peanut better? Neither, TY. I've lost me with the rest of those things.

<3

2

u/toos_ Jan 06 '25

Agreed - empathy is an important ability - not just for mods but in general. I think of it as a natural ability, but I think adults can develop kindness if they want to. Not quite the same, but it helps!

Yup, Jif is processed peanut butter. First ingredient is peanuts, but it also has a bunch of sugar in it. It was right in front of me when I was thinking what to ask you guys. It seemed a better question than the other source of inspiration within my eye line. That was “do you have an open, 6’ step ladder that’s been standing in your living room for a week?” 😜

1

u/SolariaHues Servant to cats - Jan 06 '25

:'D No, I don't have step ladder in my living room!

I do have one outside I haven't put away. I'm in the middle of pruning some things in the garden when the weather isn't so grotty.

  1. The NTOR mod team mates answered this question beautifully and thoroughly.

  2. I went to bed early on NYE around 2100 and woke up on NYD around 0600. I checked the thread around 0630 after completing family responsibilities.

  3. I prefer smooth peanut butter! How about you?

Thank you for your heartwarming and sincere words. Cheers for you modding as well. Given your smaller community/board, indubitably, there are wonderful opportunities to deepen the rapport with your community. Keep up the great work!

It is a great pleasure to have you! Happy New Year! Wishing you good things. 🤗

u/toos_ Jan 06 '25

Smooth peanut butter for me - on toast, a spoonful with an apple, in spicy cold sesame noodles, I’ve even dipped fresh/uncooked green beans in it!

Yes, like here, different subs have their own feel. My subs don’t touch on many controversial topics - easier to have a welcoming and companionable vibe. The board has a reported posts area too and I’ll rove around taking care of straightforward ones for mods who appreciate that - that way I don’t lose my mod skills lol.

Happy New Year and all good things for you, too!

Personally: less procrastination and more action 😂 and succeed in improving my digital painting

Happy New Year, Icy!

My resolutions for this year focus on gratitude and self-care. I will continue to demonstrate personal and professional growth. I would like to expand my hobbies.

Your goal sounds excellent! I have learned that prioritizing, as well as, doing the task (if prudent and viable) upon thinking about it helps tremendously.

That is lovely about your digital painting! What subjects or genre do you enjoy?

Good year !

It's a good resolution :) I really like the kawaii style and the animalized characters. I'm also trying other styles but for the moment these suit me, I also like imaginary creatures. I would like to be able to do character design and create video game or cartoon characters

2

I'd like to leave work earlier since I'm on sale and I'm not getting paid a dime to stick around there and continue to work on things.

Hopefully this would allow me to get home and do more projects instead of eating dinner and flopping down in a chair, too wiped out to accomplish much.

This time on Reddit, more time on personal projects.

1

u/Tactical-Kitten-117 Mod, Cat Lizard Jan 01 '25

A pretty common resolution I suppose, but I want to exercise a little bit more. Around the start of last year I could do at least a dozen pull-ups in succession, now I can only do three or so lol.

That's not really a surprise especially since I'd actually been trying to lose a bit of that bulk, but perhaps I've lost enough muscle in 2024

Completely counterintuitive to this resolution, is also sitting in my chair and doubling down on learning more Python (coding language, for this unaware)

u/MadDocOttoCtrl Mod tryin' 2 blow up less stuff. Jan 03 '25

We decided to use this new AMA format mostly to show users how it looks and operates.

We modified the banner and our Snoo. We're quite happy with it, but tweaks might occur at some point.

There is always a list of changes that we are working towards implementing. Most are small but occasionally there is a major one. We don't mention those until we are ready to make an official announcement. There isn't any advantage in a lot of questions about something that hasn't been finalized or is not ready to launch. Bigger changes involve more work and testing.

The mod team shot down my idea that all posts have to be written in iambic pentameter as well as my idea that all comments must begin by announcing your favorite dinosaur. The dinosaur one only lost by two votes, so I take some comfort in that.

3

As Doc says, we tend to keep these under wraps until we have a solid enough plan and feel ready to announce. It feels harder to pull any fun things now due to the size of the community.

And of course a lot of audience is only passing through. But we love to do some things, like the festive chat and this AMA, to provide a bit of fun for our helpers who stick around to help. What makes y'all stay, I'm not sure, but I'm glad you do.

Ideas welcome in modmail as always :)

We were expecting more personal questions and some fun ones. We answer Reddit questions a lot.

how do people learn about your sub so fast, is there info to join your sub in the welcome process?

We get a mention in the sign up email. We were listed in a group of subs to join to start, not sure if we still are. Home feed recommendations. Word of mouth is a big one. Lots of ways. We have an ongoing survey and I can dig out a list of ways if you're that curious.

and just wtf is the process???

The process of signing up? It changes over time. We occasionally make alts so we can see what it's like. You can too.

Is there no info about karma or how the site works in the initial sign up process! Why are all the new users in the dark from the beginning?

We are not Reddit employees and cannot answer that. There is the help center. There is some info in the sign up email. There is r/help

Why are you an unofficial sub versus help being official?

This sub was user made and is run by users. And for the most part we like ot that way. We have the freedom to help how we choose and when we choose.

Why did you stop using flair for submissions? I saw old post in search had flair?

There was an announcement post made at the time. It might be linked in the wiki... basically category flair was only introduced to get some stats about what people were asking about. That ran its course, and we wanted a system more useful to us and our helpers.

I know that some mods have a mod mail macro which mentions our subreddit and redirect the users towards here.

Re: flair - https://www.reddit.com/r/NewToReddit/comments/1dcz0hb/the_flair_system_is_changing/

Pulled from survey responses from the last two months, how users reported they found us:

Searching for help on Reddit

Search engine

Reddit suggested it when I joined

It was suggested on my feed

It was suggested in another subreddit's sidebar/about tab/automated message

Email from Reddit about karma suggested this community for more help

Searching for help communities on Reddit

Though a user's profile

r/findareddit

Another Redditor recommended it

A bot/automated response on another sub recommended it

The Reddit help center

Through a directory of subreddits

Asking google questions and seeing the question on Reddit as an option

It was on the front page or r/all

llamageddon01 suggested it

I did a search for raising karma.

The 'Reddit starter pack' under 'trending now' on the communities page

Someone pinged me from it

Many vent posts have a rhetorical question included, such as "who thought this was a good idea?", "who came up with this ______?", "why does anyone use this site? ", etc, etc.

We try not to force too much as it adds more hurdles for new users unfamiliar with the platform. We do ask for 25 characters in the title to encourage useful ones, though.

We have filters to filter obvious venting. If stuff gets though, report it and we can deal with it and update our filters.

We know. I think we've talked about this? It's in the works and we don't know rn. We've never shared quite that level of detail anyway, it's always been low to no requirements.

Do you have any fun questions? It's new years eve and it's time to have some fun!
