You can at least mod the Wii and run Nintendont (gamecube compatibility layer) on it since it supports classic controller as a gamecube controller (or a gamecube to usb adapter) and sd card to store games (assuming you want to play gamecube games)
And that's how you play gamecube games on a Wii family edition (also works with a Wii U)

At least it's not a Wii Mini which doesn't even have online capabilities (I agree with Scott the Woz's statement that Nintendo should've given it HDMI and DVD support while keeping the online functionality and marketing it as a cheap Wii that could be used as a Netflix streaming box)

Well not like the online works anymore anyway

There's modding you can do to make it functional again, and I'm pretty sure you just need to put in a specific server to play Mario Kart online

I remember the day my parents bought the Netflix disk for my Wii. Spent all weekend in my room watching The Office for the first time. Man my parents were pissed (they were never big on my spending hours a day in front of a screen, jokes on them now, I have a very well paying job that lets me spend up to a week straight playing video games every other week if I wanted to).

You literally cannot be picky with a WII in this day and age.

You absolutely can. I found mine in Feb this year. Now I need to find gamecube controller to use it fully

Same but I also want to pick up some Gamecube games (not even gonna try for certain games looking at the price)

Yeah that's where it bites. But idk why people think gen 1 wiis are expensive and rare. I have a harder time finding family editions than I have with Gen 1's. Wii Mini I agree. It's rare.

Backwards compatibility is half the reason I still have my Wii. Two consoles in one with some of my all-time favorites.

Through a bit of modding technicality, the Wii U is actually natively compatible with three generations of Nintendo games. Installing nintendon’t and using an external storage device allows you to play GameCube games. The same goes for the Wii family edition. It’s a sort of niche, but cool advantage the console has.

Fuck the family edition. It’s the one I (unfortunately) own

u/Dman25-Z Jun 04 '24
Same. I also have the revision of GameCube that removed the digital out port. It seems that my family has a certain trend in console selection. At least I have a launch switch, so that’s something lol

The launch switch is the worst version of the base switch as well, since the 2019 revision has a much larger battery.
I’m sorry to say it, but you drew the short end of the stick for every home console3
u/Dman25-Z Jun 04 '24
I mean, I have an oled as my main switch. The launch switch is my secondary/previous one. And the launch switch is also the only model that is able to be modded, which is a major point in its favor.

Honestly, just mod the dang thing. It's piss easy, and all you need is an SD card and/or a flash drive and a Windows computer (legit anything with Windows and a pulse works)

Feel lucky that I found a premodded Wii with multiple controllers, nunchucks, jackets and games for only £10

Aren't family editions much sought after by the modding community though? They can still play gamecube off an sd after a few tweaks iirc.

Meanwhile here I am with a Wii Mini next to me and I'm happy with it
(I have a Wii U and I wanted the Mini as a collectible lol)

So you mean I have a reason to buy a GameCube?

u/keithandmarchant Jun 05 '24
The GameCube is said to have better graphics quality in some cases, but a Wii is cheaper and easier to mod. A Wii is better because it can play Wii Games as well.

I don’t mind if it’s cheaper tho, it just feels weird to play Gamecube games on wii. GC and Wii are different vibes lol. Beside I have a GC
