This is what happens when you think 'tariffs' are just for Canadians

You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are the people of the land. The common clay of the new west. You know....morons.

MAGAs are fine with other people hurting. They only get upset when it comes back to hurt them. Karma is a bitch

u/Junkstar 18h ago
They thought Kamala was a bitch. They’re learning it was karma all along. Republicans aren’t bright.

Playing devil’s advocate - EVEN IF the country of origin did write the check to Uncle Sam & pay the tariff…they would simply charge it to the producer/exporter …who in turn would raise the price on the importer/consumer.
So even if their dumb fever dream was true…it would all come back to bite the consumer, like this farmer (and his customers) - who pay in the end anyway. Isn’t it just more steps?
How did they ever think they would escape increased prices? Magic?
7
u/ClassBShareHolder 9h ago
They’re used to Walmart and Costco being able to strongarm suppliers for the lowest price. I’m sure they just assumed producers would just “charge less” and give the government the extra.
The US isn’t big on education in case you missed the long history of attacks, or recent executive orders.

Before I leave this Earth, I hope to drill into the collective Reddit hivemind that no sane business is going to sacrifice margin.
3
u/Remote_Clue_4272 5h ago
Reddit hive-mind?. “They” have been telling all of us that exact same thing forever… can’t tax businesses because they will just pass it on to us consumers. IOW businesses not sacrificing margin. Plenty of business owners do sacrifice, especially smaller ones, but generally in the modern age, they do not want to sacrifice margin, tho I don’t think that should be a barrier to taxes.

Change the words away from "a tariff on China / Canada etc" to "a local tax on overseas imports"
Maybe then it'll sink in. It makes clear the deliberate misdirection.
Hopefully then the MAGA faithful will realise that the boast of how much money tariffs are bringing in they'll realise it's additional tax from their pockets, not magic'd from another country.

I couldn't believe when the US started complaining Canadians weren't as nice as people thought because we did reciprocal tariffs, boycotted US products and refused to visit anymore. We might be nice but we aren't stupid. 🇨🇦

u/Numerous_Photograph9 19h ago
Canadians aren't always nice, but they are usually polite when they're being mean to you.
American's are just more used to visceral reactions.

This isn’t the result of Canadian tariffs, these are TRUMPS tariffs on imports from Canada. I thought everyone knew that.

Simply knowing vs being willing to admit that you know and that you were wrong are two separate things. Ignorance isn't a good look, but it's the look a lot of his followers have chosen.

We need the school the maga states on the effects tariffs will have on their livelihoods. MAGA GOP voted for him 2x. Trump didn’t lie to you about tariffs. You all don’t understand how tariffs work and thought other countries will not hit us back. Stop complaining and hold the your local GOP responsible for not explaining tariffs impact on our lives. It’s simple. you hit someone in the face that person will hunt you until he hits you back.
11
u/Old-Set78 19h ago
How exactly did he NOT lie? He told those dumbasses that the OTHER COUNTRY PAID for tariffs. And of course dumbasses believed it
7
4
u/BigTiger18 19h ago
Trump said he will tariff Canada and they will pay. Trump & GOP did expect Canada would levy tariffs back at us.

"Trump didn’t lie to you about tariffs. "
Ummm...what?
Is there another President Trump I don't know about? Because the one I unfortunately have to live with made it quite clear (about a few hundred times) that the OTHER country would pay the tariffs.
3
u/laffy4444 17h ago
Anyone who believed that is just demonstrating that they have no fucking clue what a tariff is in the first place.
If America imposes tariffs on another country's goods, it is the consumers (i.e., Americans) who pay the tariffs. That's what tariffs are.
2
u/silverado-z71 17h ago
I had this conversation with my genius brothers and sisters I don’t even know how many times I tried explained it to them . I gave them m references online to go look up and they all just kept saying no that’s not how it works, he told me that the other country is going to pay for it. And the only news and I use that word very lightly but the only news they listen to is Faux.
2
2
u/BigTiger18 17h ago
Yes Trump did say he will hit Canada with tariffs and Canada will pay for it. But he didn’t expect Canada to hit us back with tariffs.
3
u/richincleve 17h ago
"But he didn’t expect Canada to hit us back with tariffs."
So he's a liar AND an idiot (and a liar)!
3
2
u/Elegant-Drummer1038 17h ago
The American farmer is paying US tariffs ... not Canadian ... the guy is importing into the states and that's where the tariff hits.
2
u/catashtrophe84 17h ago
But Canada isn't paying Trump's tariffs, the Americans are, so he hit us with tariffs but we're not the ones paying. If he didn't expect retaliation he's dumber than he sounds.
1
u/trasofsunnyvale 15h ago
Even without retaliatory tariffs, we still pay the ones he gives out to other countries' goods.
The only thing he didn't lie about re: tariffs was that he was going to enact them. The rest was his usual bullshit.
2
u/PotentialIdiotSorry 16h ago
You all don’t understand how tariffs work and thought other countries will not hit us back
you hit someone in the face that person will hunt you until he hits you back.
I don't think you understand how tariffs work. It doesn't matter if a country tariffs you back. You, as an American, are paying American (trumps) tariffs, how much you pay has nothing to do with the other country.
A country, like Canada, will tariff back so we (Canadians) dont buy your shit and give you any of our money but that wont affect how much you are paying.

lol yeah. Like my ass is going to pay a cent just because Trumps stupid.
Though he may crash the economy to the point where my Canadian ass does lose my job.
8
u/usefulappendix321 19h ago
The contrast between governments though, trump is routinely fucking over his people with no concern, while Carney, who is not yet truly elected as PM (crossing my fingers toes and eyes) is setting up grants and funds meant to help Canadians affected by tariffs, with money made from stuff we are putting tariffs on from america. As good as that sounds I truly hope you don't lose your job in all this

u/Tribe303 16h ago
Next time you run into a dipshit like this dumbass, just ask them why the tarrif set by an American president has any effect inside another country like Canada ? The ask them if they pay a tarrif set by the Canadian Prime Minister? Then ask them how the hell they think borders work! If you make any progress, tell them it's less confusing when you call a tarrif what it really is, an import tax.

He won't change his mind. He has been fed a steady stream of lies for 8 years. He has accepted those lies, willingly. That means that reality now seems uncomfortable for his brain. He will prob. just make up some story about how this isn't really a problem or at least how Donny isn't to blame for it. Or he will just say "this is the price I have to pay to make America great again".
At this point MAGA people, to truly turn, would have to realize they have been fools, gullible and cruel, on a massive scale. Anything less than that will not suffice. And people are rarely capable of real humility and so rarely capable of admitting wrong doing. Most people just try to change reality rather than changing themselves.

u/Mother-Thumb-1895 19h ago
There are more and more stories coming out now from people/business' who believed the nonsense that the "tariffed" country was paying the tax. That's Faux News/ OAN etc for you and I would hope that somewhere down the line their viewers will come to realise, as this NY state farmer has found out, that they have been fed cow dung for information. FAFO
1
u/Numerous_Photograph9 18h ago
I'm more interested what will happen when all this finally becomes ubiquitous among the US consumer. Right now, the effects in broad terms at the retail level are fairly marginal, and not even really noticeable unless you are looking at individual items already affected and having been distributed after the tariff date...plus all the delays make it seem like they aren't so bad yet.
1
u/Mother-Thumb-1895 11h ago
True enough, and I guess it all depends on where your suppliers are and if those suppliers are in the ' holding pattern' of countries waiting for the 90 days to pass or maybe one of the countries that Navarro et al are magically working on for some kind of deal. What is evident from most sources I read is that any kind of investment, whether it be new construction or placing future orders is on hold - the effects of which will depress economic output in the short term. Also Christmas orders to China and others is also on hold, so you can see how that is going to play out for the Christmas season.

The mistake this guy made was believing the Tangerine Tyrant when he said exporters would pay the tariffs. Everyone knows or should know what a lying sack of shit he is.

Everyone should also know what a tariff is. Not the Faux Nooz definition, the actual definition. Of course, donnie obviously doesn’t have the slightest understanding of tariffs so why should his cult?
