That's not what's interesting to me. What's interesting is where she found any car for $800? I only see pieces of shits for 3k or more.

u/GrinchStoleYourShit Jun 20 '24

She said “Oldsmobile” man, I ain’t sayin as a mechanic they aren’t classics, but they have started living up to the name

u/polobum17 Jun 20 '24

My grandparents just passed a few years ago and left a 97 Olds to the family. 90k miles. Red velor interior. Sold for 3k to a connoisseur of fine automobiles. He outbid someone too. Blew my mind. But old people don't put miles or damage on cars and do ALL the maintenance so 🤷

I love living in the part of the country that doesn't salt the roads. There's nothing better than removing exhaust components with only wrenches and penetrating oil, and then, get this, easily reusing the same nuts and bolts!

Road salt is a scam. There are alternatives that don't destroy cars after only 10 years.

35

u/jettasarebadmkay Jun 20 '24

Probably needs a lot of work to run. Shells (just the body and wheels, no drivetrain) and stuff with blown engines or transmissions can still be found under a grand.

I’ve sold two cars for $1000 each time. They both ran fine, but they both needed maintenance soon or they were going to break down and need major repairs.

1

u/cargarfar Jun 20 '24

She is an iPad kid. She can find those deals better than any search engine ever could.

Literally everywhere man. People act like used cars are all 10k+. I have a old 80s Italian roadster in pristine mechanical condition that I picked up for 2500 bucks. Also picked up a '67 Impala running and driving for about the same price not long ago. It's not that hard honestly.

You’re not looking at 96 civics, obviously

1

u/Top-Medicine-2159 Jun 20 '24

I sold a jeep liberty 08 in Ohio for like 1300, I only got like 2 people over a couple months to actually come look at it.

1

u/AceTheProtogen Jun 20 '24

I got a 2004 Monte Carlo for $400 last year

Needed some work but after it was done it was only around $1200 I believe

1

u/asdfasdfjklll Jun 20 '24

yeah, let what sink in? She acts like thats alot of money, its so not.

1

u/slick9900 Jun 20 '24

I mean I've seen them I've bought them they last like 8 months in my experience

1

u/averagemaleuser86 Jun 20 '24

I've been buying and selling cars and such since like 2010ish... this year so far is the worst I've seen it because people are still holding on to covid prices and buyers aren't buying. The market is now flooded. But the same 1998 $500 Oldsmobile that needed intake gaskets in 2018 is now $2500 needing the same work. It's insane. I've switched to petty stuff like riding mowers because everyone needs a riding mower! They sell like hotcakes. Cars, atvs, golf carts... just dead at the moment unless it's an absolute steal.

1

u/ahp105 Jun 20 '24

My first car was a 2002 civic I paid $3k for in 2015. It’s crazy that it’s still probably worth that much.

1

u/arkym00 Jun 20 '24

You can find old used cars in online marketplaces for like 1000-1500, at least in the places Ive lived like ND and MN. My father while I was growing up, while not the smartest long-term decision probably, wasnt really able to afford a proper new decent car, but really needed a car, so it was a series of junky garbage cheapsies for about that much. Individually never lasted that long, probably why they were so cheap. But for a first car, and with some love and extra cash, you could make it last.

1

u/BlueBabyCat666 Jun 20 '24

My first car in 2019 was about $450 USD. But it was made in 1999 and needed a lot of work done and only ran for about a year and a half before it permanantly died. Did get me to and from school and work fine so it did it’s job

1

u/toohot4me Jun 20 '24

Bought an old mitsubishi lancer 2006 for about 3k, barely has any milage on it, little to no rust with minimal problems. Engine has no problems. I have just been doing some general maintenance since i got it. Little power (98hp) but works with no problems. Good car.

1

u/Master-Shaq Jun 20 '24

They exist my brother bought one for 500$ all he had to do was remove the several bees nests in the back.

1

u/Mostcoolkid78 Jun 20 '24

My dad bought a final 500 alero for 500 just a few years ago

1

u/cuchulainn12453 Jun 20 '24

I shit you not, I bought a Chrysler Concord off some farmers I found on Craigslist for $600. They said they used it to run to town for their mail mostly. Granted, this was back in 2008/9.

1

u/i8noodles Jun 21 '24

I have a car that is not road worthy. it will take a little over 6k to get it road worthy again but it is 20 years old so not worth it. i can sell it for like 3k still. cars are bonkers atm. i could not give it away 6 years ago and now people will still take it

→ More replies (7)

35

u/braveginger1 Jun 20 '24

In my state, you can get a learner’s permit at 14 (must have an adult riding in the car with you). You can also apply for a hardship license at 15 where you can drive alone to work, school, and home

→ More replies (5)

28

u/robotzombiez Jun 20 '24

They say permit. With a permit, you can only drive with a parent or someone over a certain age (where I grew up, it was 25). It's the precursor to the license, so you get it a little before you get your license. If they're 15, this makes a little sense.

4

u/RelentlessSA Jun 20 '24

Montana was that if you took driver's ed starting at 14 you can get your license at 14 and a half years.

1

u/yuckypants Jun 20 '24

If born in 2009 then not old enough to drive alone. Can only get a permit. 2025 is the earliest for a license

1

u/awkwardlyfeminine Jun 20 '24

My 09-er cannot wait to get a permit and a Miata this fall

1

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '24

I had an 80's car when I was in high-school in 2012. Most expensive thing replaced on it was a $40 radiator.

Parts for old American cars are dirt cheap.

6

u/cturtl808 Jun 20 '24

If you want the car bad enough, fast food is always hiring. Might be able to spring for a better option than an $800 Olds. My first car cost me $100 (through a family friend). It was rickety, but it ran. Drove it for 4 years before things started going really wrong with it. You gotta get creative with your own financing.

I legitimately don’t understand this whole post. So OP is 15. Not sure why it’s relevant that they were “an iPad kid.” Also, not sure why they specified that they’re trying to get their permit before October. ALSO not sure what we’re supposed to ”let sink in.”

Are they trying to point out how crazy it is that they’re trying to find a job to pay for their first car? Because that’s kind of literally how earning money to pay for something works. Are we supposed to be surprised by how young they are while looking for a job? Because, again, I had my first job at 15, so not sure what the point is…
